Abstract Backgroud To evaluate the changes in retinal microvasculature and retrobulbar blood flow, using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and Color Doppler imaging (CDI) after intravenous chemotherapy (IVC) in patients with retinoblastoma (RB). Methods This was a retrospective comparative case control series involving 30 patients. Ten bilateral RB patients that had a preserved eye with extramacular tumours (group I), 10 unilateral RB treated with IVC that had a normal fellow study eye (group II), and 10 age-matched healthy controls. The macular retinal thickness, foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, and the macular and peripapillary retinal vessel densities (RVD) were measured. The peak systolic and end diastolic velocities of the ophthalmic, central retinal and posterior ciliary arteries were determined. A comparison among the three groups was conducted. Results Between the three cohorts, OCTA revealed no significant difference in FAZ area, superficial foveal and parafoveal RVD, deep parafoveal RVD and peripapillary RVD, (P > 0.05). By contrast, the mean deep foveal RVD, the full, inner and outer foveal and the parafoveal retinal thickness were significantly lower in group I compared with the controls, (P = 0.0329, 0.0153, 0.0311 0.0352, 0.0215). No significant difference in the blood flow velocities occurred in the retrobulbar circulation (P > 0.05). Conclusions In patients with retinoblastoma, OCTA did not detect significant changes of retinal thickness and vessel density in the eyes treated with IVC, but a slight reduction in retinal thickness and the deep foveal RVD seemed to occur in bilateral RB eyes. The retrobulbar blood flow parameters showed no measurable changes.

Abstract Introduction The advances in research methods used in ophthalmology allow for an increasingly accurate examination of the eyes, as well as the morphology and function of the vessels. Colour Doppler imaging is still the first-line method for the analysis of parameters of retrobulbar circulation. Therefore, the aim of this work was to present the current state of knowledge about anatomical and functional age-related changes in retrobulbar arteries. Methods A literature search was performed mainly based on the PubMed database. Results The anatomy of retrobulbar arteries, histological background of age-related vascular changes, age-related changes in retrobulbar blood flow in the ophthalmic artery, central retinal artery, short posterior ciliary arteries, and the reference values for the age-dependent retrobulbar circulation parameters measured by colour Doppler imaging are discussed in this review. Conclusion The age of the subject should always be taken into account when interpreting the parameters of retrobulbar blood flow measured by colour Doppler imaging.

Objective. Evaluate if different bleeding patterns associated with the use of the levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) are associated with different uterine and endometrial vascularization patterns, as evidenced by ultrasound power Doppler analysis.Methodology. A longitudinal study, with each subject acting as its own control was conducted between January 2010 and December 2012. Healthy volunteers with a history of heavy but cyclic and regular menstrual cycles were enrolled in the study. Ultrasonographic examination was performed before and after six months of LNG-IUS placement: uterine volume, endometrial thickness, and subendometrial and myometrial Doppler blood flow patterns have been evaluated.Results. A total of 32 women were enrolled out of 186 initially screened. At six months of follow-up, all subjects showed a reduction in menstrual blood loss; for analysis, they were retrospectively divided into 3 groups: normal cycling women (Group I), amenorrheic women (Group II), and women with prolonged bleedings (Group III). Intergroup analysis documented a statistically significant difference in endometrial thickness among the three groups; in addition, mean pulsatility index (PI) and resistance index (RI) in the spiral arteries were significantly lower in Group I and Group III compared to Group II. This difference persisted also when comparing—within subjects of Group III—mean PI and RI mean values before and after insertion.Conclusions. The LNG-IUS not only altered endometrial thickness, but—in women with prolonged bleedings—also significantly changed uterine artery blood flow. Further studies are needed to confirm these results and enable gynecologists to properly counsel women, improving initial continuation rates.

ABSTRACT Aim The present study aimed at evaluating the impact of neemcontaining mouthwash on plaque and gingivitis. Materials and methods This randomized, double-blinded, crossover clinical trial included 40 participants aged 18 to 35 years with washout period of 1 week between the crossover phases. A total of 20 participants, each randomly allocated into groups I and II, wherein in the first phase, group I was provided with 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate and group II with 2% neem mouthwash. After the scores were recorded, 1-week time period was given to the participants to carry over the effects of the mouthwashes and then the second phase of the test was performed. The participants were instructed to use the other mouthwash through the second test phase. Results There was a slight reduction of plaque level in the first phase as well as in the second phase. When comparison was made between the groups, no statistically significant difference was seen. Both the groups showed reduction in the gingival index (GI) scores in the first phase, and there was a statistically significant difference in both groups at baseline and after intervention (0.005 and 0.01 respectively). In the second phase, GI scores were reduced in both groups, but there was a statistically significant difference between the groups only at baseline scores (0.01). Conclusion In the present study, it has been concluded that neem mouthwash can be used as an alternative to chlorhexidine mouthwash based on the reduced scores in both the groups. Clinical significance Using neem mouthwash in maintaining oral hygiene might have a better impact in prevention as well as pervasiveness of oral diseases as it is cost-effective and easily available. Objective. The aim of this study was to evaluate intraocular pressure (IOP), retrobulbar blood flow (RBF), and ocular side effects after the application of topical dorzolamide/timolol fixed combination (DTFC) drops vs topical nebulized DTFC mist in patients with primary openangle glaucoma. Material and Methods. A total of 15 POAG patients were enrolled in a prospective study. Retrobulbar blood flow was measured in the ophthalmic (OA) and central retinal (CRA) arteries using color Doppler imaging. DTFC mist or drops were applied to the experimental eye, and it was examined after 15 and 60 minutes. DTFC mist was applied 6 times for 30 seconds using a misting device. Results. DTFC mist significantly increased peak-systolic (PSV) and end-diastolic (EDV) velocities after 15 and 60 minutes in both the arteries (OA: increase of 12.5% and 9.6% in PSV, P=0.01; increase of 25.8% and 23.1% in EDV, P=0.03; CRA: increase of 11.5% and 8.7% in PSV, increase of 32% and 21.6% in EDV, respectively, P<0.05). DTFC drops had a similar effect on PSV and EDV in the CRA after 15 and 60 minutes (increase of 8.1% and 9.6% in PSV; increase of 17.1% and 23% in EDV, respectively, P=0.03), but a significant effect on PSV and EDV in the OA was documented only after 15 minutes (increase of 9% and 21.4%, respectively, P=0.02). DTFC mist reduced the resistance index in the CRA after 15 and 60 minutes (decrease of 8.5% and 10.2%, respectively, P=0.04). Both methodologies showed a significant decrease in IOP after 15 and 60 minutes (P<0.05). All patients complained of ocular irritation after drop application, and 1 patient complained of general weakness after mist treatment. Conclusions. Nebulized DTFC mist significantly reduced IOP and increased blood flow in the OA and the CRA, causing no ocular irritation as compared with traditional DTFC drop methodology.

Purpose: To assess the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), ganglion cell and inner plexus layer (GCIPL) and blood flow parameters in retrobulbar vessels, and to analyze correlations between these parameters in myopes. Methods: The study included forty myopic and 20 healthy eyes. Standard eye examination was supplemented with OCT of the optic nerve and macula (GCIPL, RNFL, RNFL in each quadrant and rim area of the optic nerve) and color Doppler imaging of retrobulbar arteries [peak systolic and end-diastolic velocities, pulsatile index and resistance index (RI) in the ophthalmic (OA), central retinal (CRA), nasal posterior ciliary and temporal posterior ciliary arteries]. Results: Significant correlations were found between blood flow parameters in the CRA, RNFL and GCIPL thickness, and axial length (AL) and spherical equivalent (SE). There were significant positive correlations between RNFL with PSV and EDV in the CRA and negative correlations between RNFL and RI in the CRA. GCIPL was positively correlated with PSV and EDV in the CRA. The decrease in RA was associated with reduced blood flow velocities in the CRA, TPCA and NPCA. Conclusion: The reduced retrobulbar blood flow in healthy young myopes is correlated with increasing AL and refractive value, and thinning of the RNFL and GCIPL. Reduction of the rim-area of the optic disc is associated with vascular and retinal circulatory disorders. These phenomena indicate the vascular basis of the described changes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study which correlates ocular circulation with retinal structure.

Abstract PurposeThis study investigates the relationship between ophthalmic artery blood flow parameters and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in eyes with pseudoexfoliation. MethodsThree comparisons were made in this study. In the first, eyes without glaucoma with pseudoexfoliation in any of the eyes were compared with the control group. In the second, eyes with pseudoexfoliation and without glaucoma were compared with those with pseudoexfoliation and glaucoma. In the third, cases with glaucoma and pseudoexfoliation were compared with the control group. Ophthalmic artery colour Doppler imaging measurements were performed in all patients. Also, peripapillary RNFL analysis was performed. ResultsA statistically significant difference was found between the total RNFL measurements according to group (p = 0.012; p < 0.05). From the paired comparisons, the total RNFL measurements from the control group were higher than the group without glaucoma (p = 0.010). No statistically significant difference was found between the total RNFL measurements of the other groups (p > 0.05). In the pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PXG) group, there was a statistically significant negative correlation between total RNLF and Peak systolic velocity (PSV) (r = -0.743; p < 0.01). There was also a statistically significant negative correlation between total RNLF and End diastolic velocity (EDV) (r = -0.691; p < 0.01). There was no significant relationship between total RNLF and resistive index (RI) measurements (p > 0.05). ConclusionPseudoexfoliation syndrome(PXS) caused a decrease in the PSV and EDV values of ophthalmic artery blood flow parameters. Again, PXS caused a decrease in total RNFL, RNFL S, RNFL I and RNFL T thickness values.

Abstract Objective We investigated the effects of Kinesio Taping with Laser Therapy (KTLT) on the Pain threshold, Blood flow, and Balance ability of patients with Knee Osteoarthritis. Methods A total of 32 patients were randomly divided into KTLT and Control (CON) group. KTLT group was performed 30 min three times a week for four weeks in low-level laser therapy (LLLT) treatment process with Taping. CON group performed 30 min three times a week for four weeks in sham LLLT treatment process with sham taping. To measure the oppressive pain threshold, Commander Algometer and for the measurement of the blood flow rate of the skin surface, a noninvasive approach, Laser Doppler imaging equipment was used and the standing balance ability test was performed by Center of Pressure (COP), Limited of Stability (LOS). Results There was a significant difference (P<0.05) between before and after training in both groups, and KTLT group showed significant improvement in both groups. Conclusions In this study, we confirmed KTLT on the Pain threshold, Blood flow, and Balance ability of Patient with Knee Osteoarthritis.
