SUMMARYLeadership is a key role for psychiatrists, with many models that can be adopted depending in part on the nature of the individual and their training, the primary task of the team and the nature of the organisation. In this article we suggest a new concept and model of leadership, ‘psychotherapeutic leadership’. Purpose This paper aims to provide insights into the relation between professional development (PD) and organisational change processes towards sustainability, with a specific focus on empowerment. Design/methodology/approach The paper builds upon a constructivist approach, combining a literature review, a desk research on key publications and reports and a socio-political analysis to reveal the specific context in Flanders, Belgium. Findings are then connected to earlier insights from research on organisational change for sustainability. Findings The paper provides a number of PD initiatives that focus on sustainability in general and in a single higher education (HE) institution. Framing such initiatives as an organisational change process offers insights on how elements of empowerment are currently incorporated in PD initiatives and how it can strengthen them to lead to the further integration of sustainability competences in HE. Research limitations/implications Limitations are linked with the kind of sources used in the constructivist approach. The analysis only looks at written reports on the topic, albeit it also builds upon the first-hand experiences of educators in the HE institution focused upon in the case. Practical implications There is a need to frame PD initiatives as an organisational change process towards sustainability with specific attention towards empowerment. Without this framing, PD approaches comprise the risk of being left in the margins or being understood as single initiatives without any connection to the bigger picture, i.e. the transition towards sustainability in HE. Social implications Interlinking PD and organisational change provides opportunities to frame the sustainability transition within the university in a wider societal context. Originality/value The paper provides an original contribution to the debate on sustainability competences, as it frames the PD within an organisational context, rather than focusing on the individual role of educators.

SUMMARYMulti-agency public protection arrangements (MAPPA) have been in operation for around 18 years in England and Wales. The primary purpose is for the sharing of information between agencies regarding the risk management of offenders returning to the community from custodial and hospital settings. The legal framework regarding information by psychiatrists is not dealt with in one single policy or guidance document. SUMMARYThis article initially highlights that although the prevalence of alcohol use disorders in people with intellectual disability (PWID) appears to be low, it is a significant issue. This group can be more vulnerable to the adverse effects of alcohol and it is likely that many PWID who have alcohol use disorders are not being identified. We go on to review the limited existing literature on treatment for PWID who have alcohol use disorders and the challenges in meeting the needs of this patient group. We explore how assessment and treatment of alcohol use disorders in this population can be and needs to be tailored to the needs of PWID on an individual basis. It can adversely affect the quality of life of the individual and cause the breakdown of community placements, resulting in hospital admission. Absorptive capacity (AC) describes new knowledge absorption and its use for innovation on an organisational level. In this paper, we explore the role of individual AC (IAC) for corporate innovation. We focus on the individual and relationships among the capability dimensions of existing AC models. A quantitative online survey allows us to empirically explore and underline the role of the individual in AC. Our findings contribute to and extend existing theories of AC, by confirming the multidimensionality of IAC, shed light on the view of transformation and exploitation as alternative paths and their effect on different innovation processes. Our research highlights the individual’s central role in innovation and introduces, explores and evaluates individual capacities to absorb new knowledge. This in consequence will influence processes and structures within a company with regard to innovation and human resource management.

This chapter defines osteoporosis and its clinical features. The factors influencing bone mass and bone loss are described as well as contributing factors to the development of osteoporosis including hormonal, dietary, hereditary, and activity undertaken as well as the secondary causes seen in drug or disease-related issues. Diagnosis and how dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scans are used and interpreted are briefly outlined. A key point that is discussed is osteoporosis in premenopausal women and in men, including causes and management. Vertebral and hip fractures result in a significant burden to the individual and to society. Avoiding these fractures is an important factor for all health professionals to consider so this chapter offers some useful information about managing older people at greater risk of such fractures as well as lifestyle points and how to offer appropriate education and support to all those at risk. In the final sections, assessment tools are described, the role of the nurse in the care of patients with osteoporosis is outlined, and frequently asked questions are covered.
