This research aims at finding out students’ personal initiative towards their achievement in speaking English. This research was conducted in an English department at a university in North Sulawesi Indonesia. The data were obtained from the sixth semester students in English Language and Literature study program of academic year 2015/2016 consisting of 21 students. In obtaining the data about students’ personal initiative, a questionnaire was distributed, and for the speaking performance, the data were obtained from students’ scores in Public Speaking subject. To find out the relation between these two variables, Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient formula was used. The result of this research shows that there is a correlation between students’ personal initiative towards their speaking performance with the value of  = (0.52) categorized as a moderate correlation. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that personal initiative of students was important to be considered as one of several determination factors for students’ achievement in English speaking skill. It is suggested that students encourage themselves for taking initiative to speak, and for the teacher to give the students correction and suggestion to help them develop themselves.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo investigar os efeitos de tarefas convergentes e divergentes no desempenho da fala dos alunos de EFL no Irã. A população inicial deste estudo foi de 100 alunos de EFL. Eles foram selecionados no Mahan language Institute localizado em Karaj, Irã. Todos os participantes eram do sexo feminino. A língua nativa deles era o persa. Após a administração do Teste Preliminar de Inglês (PET), 60 alunos que tiveram seu nível de proficiência intermediário com base nos escores do PET foram selecionados para o estudo. Em seguida, eles foram divididos aleatoriamente em dois grupos experimentais, a saber, grupo de tarefas convergente e grupo de tarefas divergente. Os resultados do estudo revelaram que ambas as abordagens têm diferentes níveis de impacto no desempenho da fala e tarefas convergentes e divergentes afetam diferentemente o desempenho da fala dos alunos intermediários iranianos de EFL. Os resultados demonstraram que a amostra que recebeu tratamento baseado em tarefas divergentes mostrou um desenvolvimento significativo em termos de desempenho na fala (do pré-teste M = 68 ao pós-teste M = 83).

Purpose of Study: This research is talking about the use of Webtoons comic in speaking on the recount. The aim of this research is to know whether this media is effective in teaching speaking on the recount. Methodology: It is pre-experimental research with one group of pre test - post test. Thirty students in X-5 class at Muhammadiyah 1 high school Surabaya become the sample. The treatments had been done twice, so there are two pairs of results. Results: The results are administered and calculated by using SPSS 21 for windows (paired T-test). The means of pair 1 are 31.93 (pre-test 1) and 34.77(post test 1). Meanwhile, the means of pair 2 are 32.00 (pre test 2) and 35.77 (post test 2). The sig value for pair 1 is .00 and pair 2 is .00. Based on these figures, it can be said that there is any different before and after the implementation of teaching speaking performance on a recount by using Webtoons. Even the improvement of students’ speaking competence on recount is not much, for the students. Implications/Applications: Webtoons is an interactive teaching medium which makes them more enthusiastic, comfortable and easily arrange their text to be told.

Speaking in English is often a frightening spectre for students since it is complex and involves all language elements. Self-confidence is one of the factors that influencing speaking performance. The students’ self-confidence can be stimulated by using an interesting activity that promotes practice in relax situation. The use of social media such as YouTube may be the alternative to train the students’ self-confidence in speaking English. This research was aimed to improve the students’ self-confidence in order to overcome their problem in Speaking English by utilizing YouTube as the media. In this research, the students were assigned to post their speaking assignments on YouTube. This research was a quasi-experimental one group with pre and post-test research that utilized 43 students from English for Nursing 1 Class as the sample who were taken by using random sampling. The research data were obtained from the students’ verbal scores and self-confidence questionnaire which were compared before and after the project. The result of this research showed that there was an increase on the students’ self-confidence and speaking performance after they joined this project. Moreover, paired t-test proved that the increase was significant. Thus, it can be concluded that utilizing YouTube as the media to post the students’ work is effective to increase the students’ self-confidence as well as their speaking performance. This project should be continued and developed to maintain the students’ self-confidence and facilitate more practice for students in speaking English.
