Documenting the Everyday Hidden Resistance of Ride-Hailing Platform Drivers to Algorithmic Management in Lagos, Nigeria

Ride-hailing platforms such as Uber, an integral component in the global platform economy, are not only facilitating fluidity and so-called autonomy of labor; they are also creating an unfair working environment for workers. This phenomenon indicates the strength of a highly temporal and mobile capital, pitted against workers not just in Lagos but around the world. This article adopts James Scott’s notion of everyday resistance in exposing some of the hidden practices of platform drivers in Lagos. It finds that sabotaging and falsely complying through manipulating algorithms and gaming spaces for rewards are facilitated by social media and communication networks, are deliberate, hidden practices to subvert algorithmic control. While Lagos is a unique case in the global South, examples from global North cities highlight some peculiarity. A robust qualitative methodology was conducted comprising semistructured interviews, focus group discussions, and participant observations from forty Uber and Bolt trips. Other primary data sources include driver forums, attending driver training sessions and listening to transport radio programs. This article identifies temporal and spatial dynamics in recognizing everyday hidden practices as not always hidden, but dispersed and inconsistent because of the mutual learning capabilities between platform drivers and algorithmic managers. The hidden transcripts of platform drivers delve into public realms and back following, enabling platform drivers to develop new hidden practices, typifying a continuous power struggle in Lagos.

Efforts to solve environmental pollution in densely populated communities in urban areas are not only the responsibility of the government. Communities as part of social system also have an important role to control the environmental impacts of pollution. One way that community members must do in reducing environmental damage is familiarize environmentally friendly behavior. This research focuses on the analysis of environmentally friendly behavior of Pulo Geulis community members in Bogor City. Pulo Geulis is a Delta in the middle of the Ciliwung River which more or less contributes to whether or not the Ciliwung River is polluted in Bogor City. The communication process is an important factor in changing individual behavior. This study aimed to analyze the structure of community communication networks in developing environmentally friendly behavior. Primary data was obtained through a survey of 100 respondents and in-depth interviews with several informants. Data were analyzed using sociometric methods. The results of sociometric analysis showed that the structure of the community communication network in building community-friendly behavior is a radial personal network. This structure illustrated that community information centers are located in certain individuals such as head of RW, head of RT, or Posyandu cadres. The radial personal network in this study also described the formation of clique, star, bridge, and isolates in the community communication network at Pulo Geulis.

<p>In many developing countries, Community-Based Tourism (CBT) is regarded as a sustainable tourism development tool as well as a catalyst for rural community development through the involvement of local people and the improvement of the standard of living. To extend the involvement of the local community in CBT, homestay tourism is a form of operation unit and its concept aims to facilitate individual household social-cultural and economic benefit from CBT directly. Although homestays are widely regarded as providing better livelihoods directly to the homestay operators, it is not clear to what extent homestay operations actually contribute to the sustainable livelihood of homestay operators when considering the wider livelihood implications. This research seeks to explore this gap by analysing homestay operators through the lens of Sustainable Livelihood theory (Scoones, 1998). This research adopts a post-positivist paradigm with qualitative methodology. Taking a case study approach, semi-structured interviews and observations were employed to collect primary data from community leaders, heads and deputy heads of the tourist guides, and homestay operators themselves.  Results of the study found that although homestay tourism was initially established by the government. The study also found the main characteristics of the homestay operation are in a small size with a limitation of bedrooms, and a few family members involved in hosting tourists, which are husband, wife, and an adult child. All of these people are unpaid labour but receive benefits from the sharing of food and shelter. The study also uncovered that cash-based income, gender empowerment enhancement, and environmental enhancement were the positive impacts of homestay tourism on the livelihoods of the homestay operators, and these positive livelihood outcomes were in line with the original sustainable livelihood framework. In addition, cultural revitalisation was found as an emerged indicator of the sustainable livelihood outcomes, which was used to extend the revised framework. However, the study discovered that opportunity costs, culture shock, and conflict with villagers were negative implications affecting sustainable livelihood outcomes of the homestay operators. The revised Sustainable Livelihood Framework (SLF) suggests that if these negative implications are mitigated, the overall livelihood outcomes will be even greater. The results of this study are expected to provide a deeper understanding of how the impacts of homestay tourism on the sustainable livelihood of the homestay operators.</p>

Performance assessment is a performance quality measuring tool that needed to know the level of achievement of a plan, improve the performance of the next period, as well as increased transparency and public accountability. This study aims to analyze the actors' responses to the implementation of performance assessment at RS TUV as BLU. This research uses qualitative approach, using case study research method. This study attempts to describe what the actors experienced when implementing performance assessment and exploring how the actors interpreted the experience. Data used in this research are primary data and secondary data. The data collection is done by indepth interview to the actors, observe in the working environment of the actors, and analyze the supporting documents. In this study it was found that the implementation of performance assessment was responded by the actors with commitment attitude influenced by different aspects because the actors have different ways of dealing with a phenomenon. The performance indicators of the performance assessment motivates the actors to achieve it, in accordance with Goal-Setting Theory. Performance assessment provide clarity of organizational goals, goals will tell what to do and how much effort is required. Specific objectives will lead the actors to performance improvements. Furthermore, performance improvements give rise to expectations from actors towards improved rewards system in RS TUV. Penilaian kinerja merupakan alat ukur kualitas kinerja yang diperlukan antara lain untuk; mengetahui tingkat ketercapaian suatu perencanaan, memperbaiki kinerja periode berikutnya, serta peningkatan tranparansi dan akuntabilitas publik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis respons pelaku terhadap penerapan penilaian kinerja pada RS TUV sebagai BLU. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, dengan menggunakan metode penelitian studi kasus. Penelitian ini berusaha mendiskripsikan apa yang dialami pelaku ketika menerapkan penilaian kinerja dan menggali bagaimana pelaku memaknai pengalaman tersebut. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah data primer dan data sekunder. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara wawancara mendalam (indepth interview) pada pelaku, melakukan observasi di lingkungan kerja pelaku, dan menganalisis dokumen pendukung. Berdasarkan penelitian ini ditemukan bahwa penerapan penilaian kinerja direspon oleh pelaku dengan sikap komitmen yang dipengaruhi oleh aspek yang berbeda dikarenakan pelaku memiliki cara berbeda dalam menyikapi suatu fenomena. Kemudian indikator kinerja dalam penilaian kinerja memotivasi pelaku untuk mencapainya, hal ini sesuai dengan Goal-Setting Theory. Penilaian kinerja memberikan kejelasan tujuan organisasi, tujuan akan memberi tahu apa yang harus dilakukan dan berapa banyak usaha yang diperlukan. Tujuan yang spesifik akan mengarahkan pelaku pada perbaikan dan peningkatan kinerja. Selanjutnya, perbaikan dan peningkatan kinerja memunculkan harapan dari pelaku terhadap perbaikan sistem reward yang lebih baik di RS TUV.

Abstract The vital purpose of this research work is to examine the impacts of occupational health and safety management on employee's performance. It aims to investigate the nexus between the practice of OHS, safe working environment and performance of employees. The research work adopt a descriptive approach to scrutinize the contributions of provision of adequate health and safety equipment to performance of employees at Ardova Plc. Aside collecting primary data from the staffs of Ardova Plc in Lagos State cutting across diverse socio-economic class, simple random sampling was utilised in the study using 90 questionnaires to collect the primary data. However, descriptive data was therefore analyzed using Statistical Tool to show the Cross-tabulation, correlation and Chi-Square Test. The research study concludes that practice of occupational health and safety management can boost employee performance, and further suggest some policy recommendations.

In Spain, there are a few projects that link communication with social intervention in prisons. These projects have remained invisible to society, and similar initiatives taking place in other prisons were even unknown amongst themselves. It is not common to find radio, programs of digital literacy, magazines, or even television and cinema in prisons. These are activities that remain within the walls and come about from the restlessness of the educators who voluntarily produce them. The work presented comes about the doctoral research work that for 4 years explored these initiatives. Through qualitative methodology, based on the use of in-depth interviews, the authors give voice to 20 prisoners and educators that participate in these projects in Spanish jails. Without claiming to be representative, the results show that these activities can become a powerful tool for social-educative integration and personal transformation.

This has necessitated many states to enact legislation and other measures to curb cybercrime. Primary data was gathered through key informant interviews, while documentary search was used to review scholarly literature on the subject. Key informants for the study were drawn from institutions that deal in combating cybercrime. Zimbabwe does not have adequate and effective legislative instruments to combat cybercrime. Cybercrime is a threat to peace and security as it can be used to bring down critical infrastructure and disrupt communication networks of the country. Some of the measures identified to curbing cybercrime include prevention and awareness, training and development, development of new technology and introduction of new laws, and updating of current and introduction of new legislations.

This study aims to solve the problem of raising incomes, improving the quality of life of Vietnamese workers in industrial parks and economic zones today, specifically in Tra Vinh province, Viet Nam. By the method of primary data collection of 300 employees working in enterprises in Long Duc Industrial Park located in Tra Vinh City; Co Chien Industrial Park located in Cang Long district and Dinh An economic zones located in Tra Cu district; using multivariate regression model; The study showed that there are 6 factors affecting the income of workers: the occupation of workers, working experience, the qualifications of workers, ethnicity, Religion and working environment. In particular, working experience, the qualifications of workers greatly affect the income of employees. From the research results, the author have proposed solutions to improve the income of workers, ensure social security and stabilize the lives of workers in the future.

This paper examines the utility of the hegemonic stability theory in understanding regional power dynamics within Africa. The study operationalizes the concept of regional hegemony by drawing insights from a comparative foreign policy analysis of African regional powers, with emphasis on Nigeria. Using a largely qualitative methodology supplemented with primary data, the paper examines the underlying assertions of Nigeria’s perceived ‘hegemonic’ influence. Through the use of the hegemonic stability theory as a theoretical lens, this paper argues that Nigeria’s foreign policy shows few signs of a continental hegemonic disposition. In applying this theory at a regional level of analysis, the study finds very little empirical evidence that it fits the African regional context. In short, hegemonic claims in Africa are mere (un)official rhetoric and lack substance.

Purpose of the study: This study was designed to assess the role of interpersonal and Informational Justice in the purview of teaching faculty’s job satisfaction.  Methodology: A cross-sectional and quantitative research method was carried out in three randomly selected universities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan i.e. Bacha Khan University, University of Malakand, and the University of Swat. A well-structured questionnaire was used for data collection from 217 sampled respondents (employees) for primary data collection. Further, the researchers analyzed the data through descriptive and inferential statistics, i.e. frequency, percentage, correlation, and indexation of the study variables, namely dependent (job satisfaction) and independent (Interpersonal and Informational Justice), respectively. Principal Findings: Regarding the demographic sketch of the sampled respondents, the study found that the majority of the respondents were male, having the age group from 31-40 years with the collaboration of 5-10 year experiences of teaching at the university level. Further, as per the correlation test statistics at bivariate analysis between the Interpersonal and Informational Justice with job satisfaction was found significant with strong correlation (P≤0.05; 0.860) respectively. Applications of this study: The government and administration should take positive steps to provide a good working environment to establish their trust by expanding cooperation towards employees, exploration of benefits, strengthening relationships with each other, and encouragement of open communication that can stimulate and encourage an exchange of view between faculty and administration was put forward some of the recommendations in light of the study findings.  Novelty/Originality of this study: This research comes under the domain of Sociology of organization and sociology of work through the perceptional-based endeavor.
