The adoption of new normative documents in the field of education in Bulgaria determines the inclusion of children with special educational needs in general education schools. The significant and integral role which physical education plays in the educational process poses the question of the inclusion of children with impairments in motor activity training as well. Teachers implementing it contribute greatly to its positive effects. The main features of physical education include active motor activity and the related physical workload. In order for them to be adapted successfully to the specific needs of children with different disabilities, more specialized training is required. The analysis of the curricula of the faculties of education in Bulgaria shows that future pre-school and primary school teachers who will be responsible for the physical education of children in kindergartens and primary schools respectively do not receive appropriate training in adaptive physical education. The aim of this article is to present a concept for introducing a training program on "Motor Activity Training and Inclusive Physical Education", intended for students of the specialty Preschool and Primary School Education at the Faculty of Education, Thrakia University, Bulgaria

The courses «physical education» and «increasing sportsmanship» are an important part of the entire process of preparing future primary school teachers for physical education. It is worth noting that the subject «physical education» should be professionally directed, because it is recommended to transform this course from a purely practical direction into a vocational and pedagogical one, introducing into «physical education» - theoretical, methodological, organizational and pedagogical blocks. The subject «physical education» addresses the tasks of improving the level of physical fitness and improving the quality of vocational and pedagogical training of students. The study of the subject «physical education» provides, in addition to solving the problems of strengthening the health and physical development of students, as well as mastering the technique of certain sports, the methods for teaching individual exercises of the school curriculum, methodological techniques, methods for organizing educational activities and the methodology of the chosen sport. Practical classes on the «theory and methods of physical education» provide for the formation of professional preparedness as a holistic state of certain realities. Examples of the restoration of various forms of out-of-class work in accordance with their functions in the general education system indicate the possibility of ensuring the versatile development of motor qualities of pupils, promoting the preservation and strengthening the mental and physical health of children of all age groups. Considering what has already been said, we propose the formation of professional qualities among students of the faculty for the training of primary school teachers to be held in physical education classes with a sports orientation.

Primary school teachers’ science competence remains a highly relevant theoretical and practical problem. Although the general curricula and educational standards of Lithuanian general education school set quite high requirements for the process of primary school science education, the science competence of teachers raises reasonable concerns. It has to be stated that in university primary education study programmes, insufficient attention is paid to the natural science component. This leads to a possible lack of preparation for pre-service primary school teachers in science education. A pilot study conducted at the beginning of 2020, in which 107 students from two Lithuanian universities participated, showed that their scientific knowledge was poor and insufficient. Particularly weak was subject knowledge from the field “Nature research”, and also knowledge related to animate and inanimate nature. An assumption can be made that science literacy of pre-service primary education teachers is not sufficiently developed at university, which is one of the factors limiting the quality of children’s science education. There are probably two main reasons for this situation: insufficient science education in general education schools, and insufficient training of students in the field of science education for pre-service primary school teachers. Keywords: quantitative research, pilot research, pre-service teachers, science content knowledge, university students

Purpose – This paper aims to explore the multicultural education strategies employed by primary school teachers in Georgia. Design/methodology/approach – In-depth interviews with 65 primary school teachers were used. The interviews were analyzed using the theoretical framework of multicultural educational approaches defined by James Banks. The approaches used by Georgian teachers were classified into four approaches to multicultural education: contributions, additive, transformation and social action approaches. Findings – The research revealed that the majority of teachers use the contributions and additive approaches to multicultural education. The use of the transformation approach by teachers is very rare and only happens if school textbooks, as well as exercises and assignments in the textbooks, provide this opportunity. The social action approach to multicultural education has not been used in primary grades in Georgia. The research revealed that some teachers reject diversity in their classroom as well as the necessity of developing their students’ intercultural sensitivity. These teachers have an informed and conscious approach to not using multicultural approaches in the teaching process. This approach is named by the author as the “inactive action approach”, which is specific to Georgia and is widely used in primary school classes. Practical implications – The study has scientific and practical importance. The findings of this study also have practical importance. They can be used for the implementation of teacher education and training programs in Georgia. Consideration of these findings will contribute to the implementation of the National Objectives of General Education and the National Curriculum of Georgia. Originality/value – This study makes contribution to the development of the field of multicultural education in Georgia.

Abstract Recent tendencies in education highlight the need to align the system of general education in Latvia with the tenets of sustainability. In keeping with this broad target orientation, this paper re-examines international and Latvian experiences and perspectives on the application of a holistic approach to the content of primary education. This review of good practice is set against the backdrop of different theories and approaches concerned with the essence and principles of holism. More specifically, the paper addresses the issue of ensuring successful acquisition of musical cultural values in primary school via a holistic approach. In this regard, the latter is construed as movement towards the new that facilitates positive attitudes towards musical cultural values among learners and is both physically and spiritually nurturing. The paper proposes a theoretically and empirically grounded model for the usage of a holistic approach with a view to enabling acquisition of musical cultural values in primary school. The gradual development of the model is traced in the course of theoretical and empirical inquiry, the latter involving a survey and an interview with five experts
