Over the last two decades there has been a surge in activists, linguists, anthropologists, documenters digitally recording endangered language use. These unique records often are uploaded to corporate social media sites or to privately run websites. Despite popular belief, uploading these materials to a server does not mean they are archived and preserved for future generations. In this paper we discuss the differences between professional archiving systems and content management system (CMS) based approaches to making language materials accessible. Looking at the example of the Archive of Languages and Cultures of Ethnic Groups of Thailand we discuss the benefits of a Mukurtu based community website, and how linking it to a professional archive can ensure long-term preservation of precious and unique language materials.

This paper presents a concrete example of using Archivematica - a digital preservation system to incorporate, organize and manage digitized materials from the Personal Fonds Rista Odavic kept by the Archives of Serbia. The practical part includes the steps required to maintain long-term access to digital memory using the content management system AtoM. Both Archivematica and AtoM systems described in this article were implemented exclusively to start working on this Fonds. In order to maintain good traceability an excel document with the description of all the steps, notes on the execution results and a macro to automatically generate DC metadata was created.

The Henri Poincaré correspondence is a corpus of letters sent and received by this mathematician. The edition of this correspondence is a long-term project begun during the 1990s. Since 1999, a website is devoted to publish online this correspondence with digitized letters. In 2017, it has been decided to reforge this website using Omeka S. This content management system offers useful services but some user needs have led to the development of an RDFS infrastructure associated to it. Approximate and explained searches are managed thanks to SPARQL query transformations. A prototype for efficient RDF annotation of this corpus (and similar corpora) has been designed and implemented. This article deals with these three research issues and how they are addressed.

Abstract The conservation of works of art makes them accessible, and will ensure the transfer of cultural heritage to future generations,. For long term preservation, the development of effective and sustainable conservation materials is of fundamental importance. Although in the past traditional approaches in restoration have used highly effective natural materials for cleaning, modern research has focused on the systematic design of materials and methodologies. For instance, during the nineteenth century conservators reported the use of materials such as vinegar, wine, lemon juice, and today saliva is still used in cleaning applications. Although it is now recognized that these materials contain components that are effective cleaning agents, until recently there has been a lack of systematic studies regarding the control of their structure and reactivity.

This paper discusses the technical infrastructure and production workflow for the University of Lethbridge Meeting of the Minds Graduate Journal. This infrastructure was designed for an editorial board that anticipated high annual turnover: very easy to understand and train for, able to accommodate differing levels of interest and commitment from year to year, and be “publish and forget”: the long term preservation and discoverability of articles published by the journal had to be ensured regardless of future generations of students’s willingness to support the journal.

Preserving disaster remains does not always mean inheriting memories of disasters. Without long-term preservation and sustainable utilization of disaster remains, we cannot hand down the stories of disasters to the future generations. Keeping this in mind, a breakout session “Disaster Remains and Passing-on of Memories” was held in the “2020 International Forum on Telling Live Lessons from Disasters,” to grasp the trends of disaster remains inside and outside Japan. The discussions in the breakout session have put a spotlight on the important role of the “mediator” in sustainable utilization of disaster remains. With reference to the reports presented by the speakers at the breakout session, the objective of this study is to discuss the role of the “mediator” in sustainable utilization of disaster remains. The role of the “mediator” has been found to include a role of encouraging the preservation of disaster remains and a role of digging up buried memories.

AbstractTaxonomic collections must be available for study to present day scientists as well as to their successors in future generations. This conflict between present day availability and preservation for posterity is discussed with reference to general collections as well as primary types. Collections of biological specimens for reference purpose and taxonomic research are essentially archival material needing to be segregated from collections used for teaching or exhibitions purposes. As with all archival material reference specimens and primary types should be deposited where their long term preservation can be safely assured.

Newer social media have brought about attention deficits brought on by a flood of distractions, such as text messaging, blogging, and browsing on mobile devices and laptops brought into the classroom. It appears that online learning places the same demands on learners' ability to remain on-task and focused. While following up on assessing the benefits of live satellite broadcasts from remote areas of the world, the researchers made several interesting discoveries about the nature of the design of the content management system that delivered the classroom experience. The interface included a means by which students could synchronously chat during the live broadcasts. The ability to multitask appeared to increase participants' engagement in the class and their sense of social presence. The researchers present their results based on the results of a pre and post participant questionnaire to determine how best to sustain student engagement and interaction in a distance-learning environment.
