BACKGROUND: Work stress has severe implications for employee health and the economy. It not only increases anxiety and depression but it also leads to an estimated 50% increase in the risk of heart disease, significant economic consequences, partly through the costs to employers of sickness, absence, and the costs to wider society of treating the health illness. It is essential for the nurse to identify the risk factors related to work stress and to make possible ways of reducing it. AIM: This study aims to determine the factors associated with work stress in academic staff. The samples were 76 academic staffs at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. METHODS: The samples were taken by simple random sampling technique. The instrument used was a work stress questionnaire from National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health that had been modified and a stress factor questionnaire. The analysis statistic was used Spearman rank. RESULTS: This study showed that most respondents had a moderate work stress level (72.4%). The factors affecting work stress were the length of work (p = 0.002), the role of individuals in the organization (p = 0.026), career development (p = 0.027), and relations in the organization (p = 0.03). CONCLUSION: There was no relationship between working hours with the work stress level (p = 0.148). It needs more reliable monitoring of stress levels and improvements in work organization to reduce stress risks as far as possible, by improvements in job design, forms of support, and higher levels of employee involvement.

The study assesses Library and Information Science (LIS) education and training in Zimbabwe in the context of global and technological innovations. The study is informed by the post-positivist paradigm and used both qualitative and quantitative methods. The case study research design was used with different data collection tools such as survey questionnaires, in-depth interviews and document reviews. The population of the study included five deans or heads of departments and 47 LIS faculty staff, 108 final-year students from the five institutions offering LIS education and training in Zimbabwe, and 17 employers. Deans and LIS employers were purposively selected. All LIS faculty staff were included in the study. LIS final-year students were selected using the simple random sampling technique. Data were analysed using NVivo 10 and Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 20. The study found very low levels of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) integration into LIS curricula. This was attributed to status quo bias (a preference for the current state of affairs), a lack of appropriate enabling incentives such as policy and regulatory frameworks, inadequate human and physical ICT infrastructure, lack of a committed transformational technological leadership, and lack of a clear sense of educational purpose for ICT use. In addition, the study found that effective ICT integration is hindered by paradigm paralysis, paradigm effects and attendant organisational inertia in LIS education institutions in Zimbabwe. The study calls for a paradigm shift in LIS education from the teacher-centred instructivism to student-centred or heutagogical approaches.

Industralization in Africa is believed to be marred by certain workplace behaviours that are anti productive with a tendency of jeopardizing the economy of a nation and its sustenance, especially in Nigeria. This study examines conscientiousness and paranoid ideation as predictors of workplace hostility among university non-academic staff. 210 non-academic staff, comprising 98 (47%) males and 112 (53%) females who were randomly selected through the simple random sampling technique from Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State, were used as participants for the study. The ages of the participants ranged between 25 and 61, with the mean age of 35 and standard deviation of 9.56. The Symptom Distress Checklist (SCL-90) by L.R. Derogatis, R.S Lipman & L. Covi (1977) and Big Five Inventory (BFI) by O.P. John, & R.L. Kentle (1991) were used for data collection. A correlational design was adopted and multiple regression analysis was employed to analyze the data collected. Two hypotheses were tested in the study. The first hypothesis, which stated that conscientiousness will significantly predict workplace hostility among university non-academic staff, was not significant at p>.05 and so, was not accepted. The second hypothesis which stated that paranoid ideation will significantly predict workplace hostility among university non-academic staff was significant at p<.05 and so, confirmed. Based on the findings, it is recommended that workplace interventions, in the form of ombudsmen or industrial psychologists, be engaged in organizations to mediate workplace behaviours that are inimical to organizational well-being, productivity and effectiveness for better industrialization in Africa
