The article dwells upon precedent phenomena in the French protest discourse of 2018-2020. The authors of the article analyze the precedent phenomena used in the slogans of the Yellow Vests movement, as well as opponents of the reform of the French pension system proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron. The purpose of the article is to study the role of television series as a system-forming factor of modern public communication in the field of domestic television space. The relevance of the article is determined by the insufficient knowledge of the structure and content of modern television series, which is the public basis of communication. In the scientific discourse there are no works that make it possible to comprehend the television series as part of the general cultural media space and contribute to the identification of semiotic codes that determine the unity of the sphere of public communication. The article points out that the development of the information and cultural space is becoming a factor of a powerful influence on society, especially young people. The article reveals the basic principles of building a postmodern television space, defines its specificity as an element of cultural policy. In this sense, the thematic content of the television series is based not so much on the foundation of pure artistic creativity as on the information field that the media form. The television series has the ability to blur the line between documentary and artistic reality and brings this communication characteristic to a new level – creating artistically revised reconstructions of real events within the framework of the paradigm “as it really was”. Due to this, the television can have a powerful manipulative potential.

The relevance of this paper is due to the fact that in conditions of an overabundance of diverse information, there is a problem of its adequate perception. New forms of communication – the Internet and social networks – give not only new opportunities for communication and expression of the opinion, but they also create many vulnerabilities, ways of manipulating public opinion and consciousness. These questions are especially relevant for educators working with young people, whose worldview is in the process of formation, whose opinions, points of view are unstable, are influenced from outside, and mainly from Internet resources. The purpose of this article is to analyze and summarize the experience of working with students in the context of the development of critical thinking by the example of the study of comments on video messages on the YouTube channel. The description of the practical stages of the teacher-students interaction is given in accordance with the technology of teaching critical thinking. The role of the teacher and students in this process is determined. It is shown that the materials uploaded on popular Internet resources can and should be used not only for a purely practical, objective purpose, but also at a general educational, developing, worldview level, with the goal of forming critical thinking of Internet users.

This chapter explores the link between media and politics. It first considers the more general relationship between the media and governmental organizations, and more specifically the overlap of governmental and media functions, and how dramatic representation influences our understanding of political life. It then examines the ways in which journalists and media organizations make news, along with the role of political journalism in political life, especially in democracies. It also discusses the globalization of media and the convergence of styles of news presentation and reporting on television around the world. Finally, it analyses the implications of the Internet and social media for political life, from potentially promoting democracy to accusations of false narratives and ‘fake’ news.

The article aims to outline the transformation in the functioning of modern democracy as a form of government, to explore the influence of modern media on the mechanisms of its implementation. The issue is raised about the preservation of its fundamental principles during the information revolution (primarily in the media sphere) and changes in the forms and methods of communication of people during political interaction. The model of „monitoring democracy” was chosen as the theoretical and conceptual basis for considering these processes, which is based on the „idea of a monitoring citizen” and which is caused by rapid growth of various extra-parliamentary (non-representative) mechanisms of government. Among them, the most important for us is the rapid development of media instruments, namely social networks. The imperative of elections, political parties and parliamentary life, typical for representative democracy over the last two centuries of the history of civilization, is now far behind the capacity of other actors of public life to influence the political decisions of citizens. The author also points to the fact that technology companies, which have concentrated both information − microtargeting supply of information based on psychological profiling, and business activities, demonstrate a new phenomenon, which is assessed by citizens as the most competent and ethical center of gravity and trust. At the same time, governments, independent public institutions and traditional media are perceived as less effective and ethical. Such a concentration of information and corporate influence in one actor (a small group of technology companies) is a new challenge for democracy. Respectively, basic principles that ensure its functioning as the most successful form of government, namely − election and control of power, protection of human rights, participation of citizens in political life and governance, rule of law and accountability of government agencies, prevention of usurpation of power – nowadays experience theoretical rethinking, and are embodied in new political practices. In addition, they (foundations of democracy) are torpedoed by negative phenomena of the period of transformation and political turbulence, among which populism in all its manifestations is the most threatening. Key words: representative democracy, monitoring democracy, mediacracy, constructive journalism, civil communication, social networks.
