This study provides a taxonomic treatment and comparison of lower Gorstian (Silurian) radiolarians recovered from two sections of the Cape Phillips Formation in the Canadian Arctic that accumulated in two different paleoenvironmental settings. Twilight Creek is more basinal, located ∼100 km from the paleo-shelf margin, whereas Snowblind Creek is located within 1 km of the paleo-shelf break, on Cornwallis Island. The fauna, like other material from the Cape Phillips Formation, is extremely well preserved and was recovered from four samples at two localities, all from the Lobograptus progenitor graptolite Zone, an interval that has few published studies regarding radiolarians. A total of 28 species are recognized, of which two are new and described herein (Fusalfanus bilateralis n. sp. and Pseudospongoprunum parvispina n. sp.), belonging to the Haplotaeniatidae, Inaniguttidae, “Sponguridae”, Ceratoikiscidae, Entactiniidae, Palaeoscenidiidae, and Secuicollactidae. Based on these new data, the stratigraphic ranges of some taxa are extended. The species concepts of several closely related inaniguttid species are re-evaluated. As a result, Inanihella tarangulica Nazarov and Ormiston, 1984 is transferred to the genus Fusalfanus Furutani, 1990 based on cortical shell structure, and Inanihella duroacus, Inanihella legiuncula, and Inanihella perarmata are synonymized under Fusalfanus tarangulica sensu lato. Aciferopylorum admirandum is transferred to Fusalfanus and considered a junior synonym of Fusalfanus osobudaniensis. The comparative analysis of taxonomic richness and composition reveals that the more distal sample from Bathurst Island exhibits a slight, but statistically significant, higher alpha diversity at the species rank than the more proximal basin/platform samples from Snowblind Creek. Biodiversity indices at the genus rank produced mixed results, indicating that differences between sites are at best slight. There is also a strong taxonomic separation between the fine and coarse size radiolarian fractions recovered during the sieving of each sample. The siliceous sponge spicule assemblages from these faunas show an inverse diversity relationship to the radiolarians in that Snowblind Creek contains greater alpha diversity than Twilight Creek. This study provides the first documentation of facies-controls in Silurian radiolarian diversity and is useful in evaluating the role of taxa used in biostratigraphy.

The conodont biostratigraphy for the Upper Ordovician – Upper Silurian carbonate shelf (Irene Bay and Allen Bay formations) and interfingering basinal (Cape Phillips Formation) facies is established for parts of Devon and Ellesmere islands, central Canadian Arctic Islands. Revisions to the interpreted regional stratigraphic relationships and correlations are based on the stratigraphic distribution of the 51 conodont species representing 32 genera, identified from over 5000 well-preserved conodonts recovered from 101 productive samples in nine stratigraphic sections. The six zones recognized are, in ascending order, Amorphognathus ordovicicus Local-Range Zone, Aspelundia fluegeli Interval Zone, Pterospathodus celloni Local-Range Zone, Pt. pennatus procerus Local-Range Zone, Kockelella patula Local-Range Zone, and K. variabilis variabilis – Ozarkodina confluens Concurrent-Range Zone. These provided a more precise dating of the members and formations and, in particular, the range of hiatuses within this stratigraphic succession. The pattern of regional stratigraphy, facies changes, and hiatuses is interpreted as primarily related to the effects of glacioeustasy associated with the terminal Ordovician glaciation and smaller Early Silurian glacial phases, the backstepping of the Silurian shelf margin, and the geodynamic effects of the collision with Laurentia by Baltica to the east and Pearya to the north. Conodont colour alteration index values (CAI 1–6.5) from the nine sections complement earlier graptolite reflectance data in providing regional thermal maturation data of value in hydrocarbon exploration assessments.

Isolated specimens of Monograptus turriculatus (Barrande, 1850) have been recovered from calcite concretions of the turriculatus Zone (late Llandovery) from the Cape Phillips Formation, Canadian Arctic Islands. The sicula shows ventral as well as dextral lateral curvature, and the thecae show a pronounced lateral asymmetry. This asymmetry is manifest as a tear-shaped aperture, a long, laterally directed spine on the outer apertural margin, and a shorter, ventrally directed spine on the inner apertural margin. The latter spine is totally absent on the proximal thecae.Monograptus sedgwickii (Portlock, 1853) is suggested as a possible ancestor to M. turriculatus.

Cornwallis Island in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago provides one of the world’s best areas for establishing an integrated graptolite–conodont biozonation for the Late Ordovician – Silurian given the well-exposed interfingering relationship of the basinal shale and carbonate platform facies. Building on earlier graptolite work, 180 samples were collected from nine sections of the Cape Phillips Formation, of which 118 yielded approximately 7600 conodont elements representing 54 species in 25 genera, including one new genus and species, Mayrodus melchini; the conodonts are well preserved, with minimal thermal alteration (colour alteration index, CAI 1). Nine conodont zones are recognized and defined for this region, namely the Amorphognathus ordovicicus, Distomodus kentuckyensis, Aspelundia expansa, As. fluegeli, and Pterospathodus celloni Interval zones, Pt. a. amorphognathoides Taxon-range Zone, Pt. pennatus procerus and Kockelella ranuliformis Highest-occurrence zones, and K. ortus absidata Taxon-range Zone. An integration of graptolite and conodont zones is documented. Earlier paleontological and isotope geochemical studies have demonstrated the dynamic nature of the Silurian ocean–climate system and identified major faunal turnovers or events. Five of these are recognized in the Cornwallis fauna and related to oceanographic and climate changes, in part referring to recent oxygen isotope data from conodonts from the Cornwallis collections: Hirnantian extinction event, Sandvika Event (late Aeronian, Llandovery), Snipklint Primo Episode (early Telychian, Llandovery), Ireviken Event (late Telychian, Llandovery–Sheinwoodian, Wenlock), and Mulde Event (early Homerian, Wenlock).

Radiolaria of the family Palaeoscenidiidae were recovered from two bedded-limestone and two limestone-concretion samples from the upper Llandovery of the Cape Phillips Formation, Cornwallis Island, Arctic Canada. The new genus Insolitignum is defined by two apical rays, three basal rays, and a principal ray in an intermediate position. The principal ray distinguishes this genus from Palaeoephippium. Insolitignum dissimile, the type species of the new genus, was previously placed in Palaeoephippium. New species described here are Insolitignum peranima, Insolitignum vivanima, and Palaeoephippium adraini.

Species of two new genera of Encrinuridae occur in the Ludlow Douro Formation at Goodsir Creek, Cornwallis Island, Gamier Bay, Somerset Island, and Prince Alfred Bay, Devon Island. The encrinurine Aegrotocatellus n. gen. includes four highly autapomorphic species, and is most closely related to Balizoma Holloway, 1980. Separate taxa are recognized at low and high stratigraphic intervals at Goodsir Creek (the type species, Aegrotocatellus jaggeri n. gen. and sp., and Aegrotocatellus n. sp. A, respectively), at Gamier Bay (Aegrotocatellus n. sp. B), and at Prince Alfred Bay (Aegrotocatellus nankerphelgeorum n. gen. and sp.). Perirehaedulus n. gen. is a coronocephaline most closely related to the Chinese upper Llandovery taxon Kailia Chang, 1974. The type species, Perirehaedulus caprus (Thomas in Thomas and Narbonne, 1979) from Goodsir Creek, is distinct from P. richardsi n. gen. and sp. at Garnier Bay. The upper Wenlock–Ludlow range of Balizoma is extended into the Arctic by Balizoma aff. B. variolaris (Brongniart, 1822) from Homerian rocks of the Cape Phillips Formation near Abbott River, Cornwallis Island, and by Balizoma sp., from the late Ludlow Douro Formation at Goodsir Creek.

Abundant hexactinellid and lithistid sponges occur in Ludlow (Silurian) platform slope strata of the Cape Phillips Formation, Canadian Arctic Islands. The following are new: in the Anthaspidellidae Miller, 1889, rhodesispongia simplex n.gen and sp., Climacospongia snowblindella n.sp., and Climacospongia undulata n.sp.; in the Sphaerocladina Schrammen, 1910, Caryospongia tuberosa n.sp.; in the Hexactinellida Schmidt, 1870 Malumispongium? cornwallisi n.sp., of the monospecific superfamily Malumispongium Rigby, 1967. Other previously described sponges recognized in the study assemblage include Hindia sphaeroidalis Duncan, 1879 and Caryospongia juglans Rauff, 1894. These occur in association with abundant Archaeoscyphia sp. in thin, laterally extensive lithistid sponge biostromes which throve on platform slope sediments during the Late Silurian. Based on the dominant dendroclone forms in the skeletons of these and other genera, Anthaspidellidae can be divided informally into two groups: (i) the polyclonids, possessing complex skeletons built of variable dendroclones types, including I-, X-, and Y-shape dendroclones, and accessory spicules, including rhizoclones, chiastoclones, and monactines; and (ii) the monoclonids, possessing simpler parenchymal canal systems and skeletons constructed mainly of I-shaped (amphiarborescent) dendroclones and lacking accessory spicules. The classification, based chiefly on skeletal architecture, suggests two main evolutionary trends in the family. The monoclonids generally maintained structural simplicity, inherited from the probable ancestral monactinellid, whereas the polyclonids evolved a varied and complex skeletal architecture that was more successful.

Four determinations of gravity were made during the summer of 1948, with the pendulum apparatus of the Dominion Observatory, at Goose Bay, Labrador (latitude 53°), Frobisher Bay, Baffin Island (latitude 64°), Resolute Bay, Cornwallis Island (latitude 75°), and Thule, Greenland (latitude 77°), approximately. The anomalies at the two most northerly stations are comparatively small and those at the other two stations, although larger, do not exceed many that have been observed in other parts of Canada. Norgaard's determination at Thule is confirmed by the author.It is anticipated that these determinations, apart from their immediate interest, will serve as useful reference points for future work in the Canadian Arctic.
