Study Population

The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the preliminary results of a school-based oral health educational strategy adopted in public primary schools from the city of Maringa, State of Parana, Brazil. The study sample was composed by 556 children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years old, 124 schoolteachers and a group of 55 mothers. The educational approach was implemented for 18 months and consisted of reinforcements of interventions addressed to students and schoolteachers at school level and few activities targeted at the mothers, performed by means of home visits. Baseline and follow-up interviews focused on oral health care were undertaken for the entire study population. As a stimulus for the students to achieve proper oral hygiene habits, the simplified oral hygiene index was assessed at three different moments. A statistically significant improvement in their oral hygiene index (p<0.001) was recorded. The results achieved suggest an encouraging tendency towards the improvement in the levels of oral health care among the school-age youths studied. They also point out the need of intensifying the preparation of schoolteachers in oral health topics, as well the instructions to the mothers for their oral health care. Moreover, they highlight the importance of the continuous implementation of school-based programs to promote the oral health.

Abstract: Oral health plays an important role in the body health status. This study was aimed to determine the behavior about dental and oral health care among the people at Paniki, Sitaro. This was a descriptive study with a cross sectional design. Population consisted of people living at Paniki, Sitaro aged 18-60 years. There were 92 respondents obtained by using purposive sampling method. Data were collected by using questionnaire and examination of simplified oral hygiene index (OHI-S). The results showed that 60.8% of respondents had good behavior of dental and oral health care, and 75% of respondents had OHI-S evaluation as poor category. Conclusion: In general, people of Paniki, Sitaro had good behavior about dental and oral health care but their dental and oral hygiene was in poor category.Keywords: behavior of dental and oral hygiene maintenance Abstrak: Kesehatan gigi dan mulut berperan penting bagi kesehatan tubuh umumnya. Jenis penelitian ialah deskriptif dengan desain potong lintang, dilakukan terhadap masyarakat usia 18-60 tahun di Kelurahan Paniki Kabupaten Sitaro. Jumlah responden 92 orang diperoleh dengan menggunakan metode purposive sampling. Pengumpulan data didapat melalui pengisian kuisioner dan pemeriksaan Oral Hygiene Index Simplified (OHI-S). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perilaku pemeliharaan kesehatan gigi dan mulut masyarakat di Kelurahan Paniki Kabupaten Sitaro sebanyak 60,8% tergolong baik. Penilaian OHI-S dari masyarakat Paniki sebanyak 75% tergolong buruk. Simpulan: Pengetahuan, sikap, dan tindakan masyarakat di Kelurahan Paniki Kabupaten Sitaro tergolong baik tetapi status kebersihan gigi dan mulut tergolong buruk.Kata kunci: Perilaku pemeliharaan kebersihan gigi dan mulut

Background: Root caries is an emerging dental health problem for elderly mostly because of increased life expectancy and improvement in oral health care, leading to higher retention of teeth, and hence increased number of exposed root surfaces susceptible to caries. Objective: To determine the prevalence of root caries and associated sociodemographic, behavioral and clinical factors among elderly patients who attended dental clinics in selected public hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Methods: Elderly patients 60 years and above were interviewed to obtain socio demographic and behavioral factors. This was followed by clinical examination to assess teeth with root caries, gingival recession and oral hygiene of the patients. Findings: The study involved 348 elderly with mean age of 76 SD ± 6.2 years. Prevalence of root caries was 42.2% (n=147) and the mean root caries index was 6.77%, SD 9.6 (0.00 – 43.24). Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that; older age (OR 1.8, CI 1.13 – 2.87), having higher level of education (OR1.77, CI 1.1 – 2.93) and poor oral hygiene (OR 4.03, CI 2.3 – 6.98), significantly associated with having root caries. Across all the types of teeth, maxillary teeth were mostly affected by root caries than mandibular teeth. Conclusion: The current study reveals high prevalence of root caries among the examined elderly patients. Socio-demographic as well as clinical factors contributed significantly to having root caries. Appropriate oral hygiene measures and prevention of gingival recession is recommended when providing oral health care for the elderly in Dar es Salaam.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the healthcare system, including dentistry. However, it is not entirely clear whether affected patients’ willingness for regular dental visits and preventive behaviors with regards oral hygiene and diet. This is essential to understanding the potential effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the acceleration of dental issues in the future. It was aimed at checking the level of dental visit avoidance, self-reported oral health needs, and dietary changes. This cross-sectional questionnaire study conducted in Poland (n = 2574; mean age 44.4 ± 15.6; female 56.3%) assessed nutritional habits and dental care changes during the COVID-19 pandemic. As demonstrated, nearly half of the responders (47.1%) avoided regular dental visits, while only 0.5% used online consultations. Fears related to potential cross-contamination in dental offices dropped from 25% to 11.4% and were associated with increased BMI and age (p < 0.05). Sweet snacking/drinking confirmed 19.1%/33.2% subjects. Self-reported oral health care needs (tooth stain, calculus, gingivitis, loss of fillings) were related to frequent snacking and poor oral hygiene (p < 0.05). The study highlights that pandemic periods are covered by eating and drinking changes combined with inadequate hygiene and dental care impose health complaints in the oral cavity. This can magnify both nutritional and interrelated oral health issues, highlighting the need to implement preventive and mitigation measures.

During a stroke, the mouth tends to become an unhealthy place and may give rise to various life-threatening conditions. To this end, there have been repeated calls to incorporate oral hygiene guidelines and practices for hospitalized stroke patients to prevent aspiration pneumonia and improve patients’ oral health. The objective of the study was to determine health care providers’ practices of oral health care among patients hospitalized after an occurrence of stroke and to determine health care providers’ background and work environment effect on these practices. A cross-sectional study was conducted among stroke care providers in 13 public hospitals in Malaysia. The questionnaires distributed were self-administered, where nursing staff provided details of their oral health care practices for stroke patients. Information on the background of health care providers and work environment was also collected. Overall, a total of 780 responses from the registered nurses were obtained. Almost half of the respondents (48.1%) reported that they recommended toothbrushing twice or more per day to stroke patients. Two-thirds (64.7%) reported that they performed daily mouthwashing on their patient, while less than half (38.8%) reported daily oral hygiene assistance. Result of the analysis revealed that oral hygiene practices were significantly associated with having working wards ( P < 0.05), level of qualification ( P < 0.05), having oral health care guidelines ( P < 0.001), specific resources ( P < 0.05), and attending previous training in oral care ( P < 0.001). Provision of oral hygiene practices for hospitalized stroke patients is important. A lack of oral health care guidelines, support from dental professionals, specific resources, training, and assistance in daily oral care for patients is evident and detrimental to oral hygiene practices. The current findings have significant implications for new initiatives to support health care providers, particularly the registered nurses performing oral health care for hospitalized stroke patients. Knowledge Transfer Statement: This study may provide a basis of information for improving the delivery of oral health care to stroke patients. Enhancement in the training and improvement in the existing guidelines and resources is pivotal for the provision of better oral health care for the potential benefits to these patients, including their improved quality of life and disease prevention.
