This study explored how manipulating the colour of training vests affects footballers’ individual and collective performance during a Gk+6vs6+Gk medium-sided game. A total of 21 under-17 years old players were involved in three experimental conditions in a random order for a total of four days: i) CONTROL, two teams using two different colour vests; ii) SAME, both teams wearing blue vests; iii) MIXED, all 6 players per team wore different colour vests. Players’ positional data was used to compute time-motion and tactical-related variables, while video analysis was used to collect technical variables. Further, these variables were synchronized with spatiotemporal data allowing to capture ball-related actions in a horizontal 2D plan. All variables were analysed from the offensive and defensive perspective. From the offensive perspective, players performed more and further shots to goal during the CONTROL than in SAME and MIXED (small effects) conditions, with a decreased distance to the nearest defender (small effects). While defending, results revealed lower distance to the nearest teammate (small effects) in the CONTROL than in the SAME and MIXED conditions, and higher team longitudinal synchronization (small effects). In addition, the CONTROL showed in general lower values of team width while defending than in the other 2 conditions. Overall, coaches may use the CONTROL condition to emphasize offensive performance and defensive behaviour over the longitudinal direction with increased physical demands. In turn, coaches may use the manipulation of players vests to emphasize defensive performance, as players seem to behave more cohesively under such scenarios.

This study explored how the number of allowed ball touches per player possession affected the performance of different age groups (U9, U11, U13, U15, U17 and U19) during a Gk + 4vs4+Gk small-sided games. Each day, players randomly performed the following three conditions (for a total of 6 days): i) free-play (FP); ii) maximum of 2 touches (2 T); iii) 1 touch (1 T). Players’ positional data was used to compute time-motion and positional-related variables, while video analysis was used to capture technical performance. In general, no effects were identified in relation to the players distances (team centroid, opponents’ centroid, nearest teammate, and nearest opponent). There were small to moderate decreases in the longitudinal synchronization while playing with 1 T and 2 T in the U9 and U17, but a moderate increase in the U15. There was a general decrease in the distance covered and distance covered while running (small to moderate effects) when playing with limited touches in all age groups. Limiting the touches promoted small to moderate increases in the number of successful passes in the U9, U15, and U17 and a general increase in unsuccessful actions. Overall, playing with limited touches emphasized the passing skill while it also contributed to more unsuccessful actions and lower physical demands. As so, coaches may use the 2 T in young age groups (U9-U13) as they seem less able to successfully cope with 1 T, while using 1 T in older age groups due to their higher ability to interact with environmental information.

According to a provocative theory set forth by Manfred Clynes, there are composer-specific cyclic patterns of (unnotated) musical microstructure that, when discovered and realized by a performer, help to give the music its characteristic expressive quality. Clynes, relying mainly on his own judgment as an experienced musician, has derived such personal "pulses" for several famous composers by imposing time and amplitude perturbations on computer-controlled performances of classical music and modifying them until they converged on some optimal expression. To conduct a preliminary test of the general music lover's appreciation of such "pulsed" performances, two sets of piano pieces by Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, and Schubert, one in quadruple and the other in triple meter, were selected for this study. Each piece was synthesized with each composer's pulse and also without any pulse. These different versions were presented in random order to listeners of varying musical sophistication for preference judgments relative to the unpulsed version. There were reliable changes in listeners' pulse preferences across different composers' pieces, which affirms one essential prerequisite of Clynes' theory. Moreover, in several instances the "correct" pulse was preferred most, which suggests not only that these pulse patterns indeed capture composer- specific qualities, but also that listeners without extensive musical experience can appreciate them. In other cases, however, listeners' preferences were not as expected, and possible causes for these deviations are discussed.

The purpose of the present study was to examine whether combined ingestion of a large amount of fructose and glucose during cycling exercise would lead to exogenous carbohydrate oxidation rates >1 g/min. Eight trained cyclists (maximal O2consumption: 62 ± 3 ml·kg-1·min-1) performed four exercise trials in random order. Each trial consisted of 120 min of cycling at 50% maximum power output (63 ± 2% maximal O2consumption), while subjects received a solution providing either 1.2 g/min of glucose (Med-Glu), 1.8 g/min of glucose (High-Glu), 0.6 g/min of fructose + 1.2 g/min of glucose (Fruc+Glu), or water. The ingested fructose was labeled with [U-13C]fructose, and the ingested glucose was labeled with [U-14C]glucose. Peak exogenous carbohydrate oxidation rates were ∼55% higher ( P < 0.001) in Fruc+Glu (1.26 ± 0.07 g/min) compared with Med-Glu and High-Glu (0.80 ± 0.04 and 0.83 ± 0.05 g/min, respectively). Furthermore, the average exogenous carbohydrate oxidation rates over the 60- to 120-min exercise period were higher ( P < 0.001) in Fruc+Glu compared with Med-Glu and High-Glu (1.16 ± 0.06, 0.75 ± 0.04, and 0.75 ± 0.04 g/min, respectively). There was a trend toward a lower endogenous carbohydrate oxidation in Fruc+Glu compared with the other two carbohydrate trials, but this failed to reach statistical significance ( P = 0.075). The present results demonstrate that, when fructose and glucose are ingested simultaneously at high rates during cycling exercise, exogenous carbohydrate oxidation rates can reach peak values of ∼1.3 g/min.

AbstractChimie douce reactions (hydrolysis and reduction) from layered oxides : NaNiO2, NaxCoO2 and NaNil-xCoxO2 lead to numerous oxyhydroxides and hydroxides which differ by the composition of the intersheet space.According to the experimental conditions of the hydrolysis reaction, the oxyhydroxides can be unhydrated or intercalated with one or two layers of water molecules. From the most hydrated phases, the other ones can be obtained by chemical, thermal and even mechanical treatment.The reduction of Co-substituted nickel oxyhydroxides leads to hydroxides in which nickel and cobalt ions are respectively divalent and trivalent. In order to compensate the excess of positive charge in the (Ni, Co)O2 sheet, anions (OH-, CO32-, SO42-, NO3-) are inserted in the Van der Waals gap.For the highest anion amounts, well ordered α*-type materials are obtained. Water molecules are simultaneously inserted in the interslab space. Their structure is strongly related to the hydrotalcite one. When the amouit of anions in the intersheet space is not sufficient, interstratified materials are obtained. In this case the (Ni,Co)(OH)2 slabs are separated by a layer of CO32- anions and water molecules (α*-type) or by an empty Van der Waals gap (β(II)-type). The amount of α*-type planes in the structure increases with the cobalt amount. All these materials have been characterized by IR spectroscopy which allows to detect the existence of two types of O-H bonds (free in α*-type plane or hydrogen bonded in ²(II)-type plane).

Axisymmetric deformation of anisotropic porous materials caused by geometry of pores or by distribution of pores is analyzed. Two models of the materials are proposed: one consists of spherical cells each of which has a concentric ellipsoidal pore; and the other consists of ellipsoidal cells each of which has a concentric spherical pore. The velocity field in the matrix is assumed and the upper bound approach is attempted. Yield criteria are expressed as ellipses on the σm σ3 plane which are longer in longitudinal direction with increasing anisotropy and smaller with increasing volume fraction of the pore. Furthermore, the axes rotate about the origin at an angle α from the σm-axis, while the axis for isotropic porous materials is on the σm-axis.

DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/1980-0037.2016v18n1p62 The aim of this study was to compare the collective tactical behavior between numerically balanced and unbalanced small-sided soccer games. Eighteen male soccer players (mean age 16.4 years) participated in the study. Polar coordinate analysis was performed using positional data obtained with a 15-Hz GPS device. Collective variables including length, width, centroid distance (average point between teammates), and length per width ratio (LPWratio) were collected. Data were analyzed using Friedman’s test. The results showed greater length and width values in 4vs.3 games, while a higher LPWratiowas observed in 3vs.3+2 games compared to the other configurations. In games with an additional player (4vs.3), ball circulation and the increase in effective game space were alternatives to overcome the more concentrated defensive systems near the goal. On the other hand, 3vs.3+2 games allowed more actions in the length axis and a fast reach of the opponent’s goal.

Zearalenone (ZEA) is a potent estrogenic metabolite produced by some Fusarium species. No treatment has been successfully employed to get rid of the ZEA contained in foods. This study was conducted to evaluate the ability (adsorptive power) of five adsorbents—activated carbon, bentonite, talc, sandstone, and calcium sulfate—to trap ZEA in vitro. Activated carbon was the best adsorbent, binding 100% ZEA (pH 3 and 7.3) at 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, and 1% dose levels. Bentonite, talc, and calcium sulfate were less efficient than activated carbon but still could bind ZEA to some extent. On the other hand, sandstone was inactive in the experimental conditions employed. Our results indicate that activated carbon could be a good candidate for detoxification of ZEA present in foods.

The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of environmental conditions on visual workload. The environmental variables used were temperature, studied at levels of 45°F., WBGT, and 95°F., WBGT; and noise, studied at 83 dBA intermittent noise and 93 dBA continuous noise. Workload was defined as the amount of attention demanded from an operator as measured by performance decrement on a secondary task while performing a primary and secondary task simultaneously. The secondary task was reading random numbers, and the primary task was reading word lists. Significant differences (p<.05) were found between the control condition and all experimental conditions. The low temperature and high temperature-continuous noise conditions were significantly different from the other conditions. Noise and temperature were found to significantly increase workload (p<05).

The primary objective of the present paper is to depict the mechanical behavior of high density polyethylene, (HDPE), pipes under different loading conditions with different specimen geometries to provide the designer with reliable design data relevant to practical applications. Therefore, it is necessary to study the effect of strain rate, ring configuration, and grip or fixture type on the mechanical behavior of dumb-bell-shaped, (DBS), and ring specimens made from HDPE pipe material. DBS and ring specimens are cut from the pipe in longitudinally, and circumferential (transverse) direction respectively. On the other hand, the ring specimen configuration is classified into two types; full ring, (FR), and notched ring, (NR) (equal double notch from two sides of notched ring specimen) specimens according to ASTM D 2290-12 standard. Tensile tests are conducted on specimens cut out from the pipe with thickness 10 mm at different crosshead speeds (10–1000 mm/min), and ambient temperature, Ta = 20 °C to investigate the mechanical properties of DBS, and ring specimens. In the case of test specimens taken from longitudinal direction from the pipe a necking phenomenon before failure appears at different locations along the gauge section. On the other hand, the fracture of NR specimens occurs at one notched side. The results demonstrated that the NR specimen has higher yield stress than DBS, and FR specimens at all crosshead speeds. The present experimental work reveals that the crosshead speed has a significant effect on the mechanical behavior of both DBS, and ring specimens. The fixture type plays an important role in the mechanical behavior for both FR and NR specimens at all crosshead speeds.

Two very small intracanalicular tumors, resected en bloc with the complete eighth nerve, were serially sectioned in order to study the relationship between the tumors and the nerves of origin. Both cases met the size criteria for hearing conservation surgery; however, the patient with the smaller tumor and the better hearing had no recognizable cochlear nerve fibers passing the tumor. The cochlear nerve in the patient with poorer hearing was completely free of tumor. The tumor with the infiltrated cochlear nerve seemed to originate from the inferior vestibular nerve. The other tumor seemed to arise from the superior vestibular nerve. Proximally, the tumors occupied a more central location in the involved nerves, but they abruptly became eccentric and exophytic as they proceeded laterally. Nerve fibers remaining about the tumors were displaced to the periphery. These nerve fiber aggregates became quite thin and attenuated, frequently separating into smaller aggregates which, ultimately, were incorporated into the tumors. As fibers came closer to the tumors, they tended to change from their longitudinal direction toward a more circumferential orientation about the surface of the tumors. The tumor-nerve fiber interfaces were quite variable throughout the course of the tumor, ranging from large aggregates of nerve fibers distinctly separate from the tumors to aggregates separate but tightly applied to the tumors without a tissue plane between, to aggregates partially incorporated within the periphery of the tumors, to aggregates completely incorporated into the periphery of the tumors. Frequently several types of interfaces were seen in the same section. These findings showed that in one case the cochlear nerve could have been surgically separated from the acoustic tumor; in the other specimen, it could not have been separated. It was impossible to predict between the two. In these two very small tumors, the gross specimen observation correlated reasonably well with the histology, thus suggesting that intraoperative observation may be a predictor in hearing conservation surgery; however, previous studies in slightly larger tumors make this an extremely guarded concept.
