With the growing number of elderly people in our society and the search of this population for technologies, more specifically the use of smartphones, and considering the physical and mental difficulties that aging causes to these people, there is a need to apply concepts of usability in mobile apps. However, there are technical and cultural barriers for the application of usability to be effective in meeting the needs of the elderly. Developing systems with agility as the market demands is antagonistic to the time required for application and usability evaluation in the software. Besides, the lack of usability requirements due to knowledge absence and time are some difficulties that the development team encounters in their daily lives. Given this context, the objective of this work was to create a prototype to help the development team to integrate usability, with a focus on elderly audiences, during the construction of a mobile application. To achieve this goal, the list of requirements, metrics and usability assessment methods focusing on mobile and elderly applications were selected from related works. Then the relationship between requirements, metrics, and assessment methods was identified and tested and the prototype was developed. Finally, with the analysis of the test it was possible to verify that the prototype reaches its objectives, as 88.9% of the participants would use the prototype in their projects and all stated that the prototype can contribute to the development of mobile applications.

Although individuals increasingly use mobile applications (apps) in their daily lives, uncertainty exists regarding how the apps will use the information they request, and it is necessary to protect users from privacy-invasive apps. Recent literature has begun to pay much attention to the privacy issue in the context of mobile apps. However, little attention has been given to designing the permission request interface to reduce individuals’ perceived uncertainty and to support their informed decisions. Drawing on the principal–agent perspective, our study aims to understand the effects of permission justification, certification, and permission relevance on users’ perceived uncertainty, which in turn influences their permission authorization. Two studies were conducted with vignettes. Our results show that certification and permission relevance indeed reduce users’ perceived uncertainty. Moreover, permission relevance moderates the relationship between permission justification and perceived uncertainty. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

The increasing popularity of mHealth is a promising opportunity for pain self-management. Mobile apps can be easily developed, but understanding the design and usability will result in apps that can retain more users. This research aims at identifying, analyzing, and synthesizing the current state-of-the-art of: (a) the design approach and (b) usability assessment of pain management mobile applications. A systematic literature review was conducted on 27 studies retrieved from Medline, PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Scopus. The review revealed that most of the apps were for chronic pain. No app was specifically for men or for the elderly. None of the studies involved expert-based system inspection methods. Only one study used two different approaches of automated and empirical evaluation. We mapped the identified usability issues to ISO 9241-11 and ISO/IEC 25010, and aggregated the recommendations for improvement. Moreover, we also identified certain issues that are solely concerned with the patient’s behavior. We organized the issues into taxonomies of design considerations for building usable pain self-management mobile applications. As pain is prevalent among the elderly, pain management will be much needed while moving toward an aging society. However, we found that the involvement of the elderly in the development of pain management mobile apps is very minimal, which may affect the utility and usability of the apps.

Background: A good quality of life in the elderly must be maintained because good quality of life is an optimal condition for the elderly to live their daily lives. Depression in the elderly will have a severe impact on physical, social life where it will reduce the quality of life. This study was conducted to assess the relationship of quality of life with depression in the elderly. Method: This study uses a cross-sectional method, conducted in May-June 2019, using WHOQOL-BREf, GDS, AMT, ADL. Results: A total of 195 elderly participated, average age 67 years, married 94.4 percent, mostly 45.1 percent did not go to school, ADL was found to be normal, there was moderate cognitive impairment as much as 13.3 percent, and depression 80 percent. There was a significant relationship between quality of life and depression (OR: 1.22; 95% IK 1.02-3.97), which means that elderly people with poor quality of life have a higher risk of depression. Conclusion: There is a significant negative correlation between the quality of life with depression, where the elderly with poor quality of life have a 1.22 times greater risk of depression.

Purpose: This research aims to study the relationship between perception of elderly’s health and health behaviors in Nakhon Nayok province, Thailand Methods: This research was a cross-sectional study. The questionnaire was used to collect the data. This research was conducted in Nakhon Nayok province. The sample size was 270 which applied Taro Yamane's formula at a significant level 0.05. The descriptive statistics was implemented to describe the variables by presenting the frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation. Furthermore, multiple regression analysis was applied to analyze the relationship between perception of elderly’s health and health behaviors. The statistical significance was considered to reject Hypothesis-null at < 0.05. Results: From a total of 270 people, more than 58.22% of the elderly perceived that they had moderate health conditions. Most elderly had congenital diseases (62.2%). The multiple regression analysis results showed that health status perception and health status perception when compared to their cohort related significantly to health behavior. Conclusion: The government should support the elderly on participation, trust, engagement, and cultural concern of the people in the community, which can contribute to promoting the physical, mental and social condition of the elderly.
