The Stability

The ozone therapy is now considered a valuable supportive therapy for many diseases, and because of its powerful ability to inactivate microorganisms even in periodontal disease. Others normally expected effects, such as reducing inflammation and the resumption of the healing process and healing, in conjunction with the fact that the treatment is completely painless and without side effects increase its tolerability and patient compliance. The primary purpose of this presentation is to show the effectiveness of ozone gas and ozonized oils used in addition to the normal non-surgical therapy in terms of reduction of PI, BOP, PD, CAL and REC and the stability of the results at 6 months. Furthermore we hope to raise interest in and attention to the methodical and develop further research in the field of clinical application of oxygen ozone therapy

The usage of ozone in dentistry has been proposed because of its antimicrobial, disinfectant, biocompatibility and healing properties. In the last decade a number of therapeutic protocols with ozone have been developed to address common dental infections associated with periodontal disease, RCT and caries. Despite these advantages, therapeutic ozone’s application in dentistry is limited because of its possible side effects. Hence, dental practitioners need to know the proper usage of ozone therapy that can provide better patient care and considerably cut down the time and cost of the treatment.

O estudo ora conduzido tem como objetivo evidenciar os efeitos da terapia com ozônio como um tratamento integrativo e complementar não cirúrgico para doenças periodontais. Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura, na qual foram feitas buscas nas bases de dados Medline, Lilacs, EBSCOHost e Cochrane, utilizando os descritores “ozone”, “ozone therapy” e “periodontal disease” publicados entre 2011 e 2021, sendo eleitos 20 artigos para compor o estudo. O ozônio é um gás formado por três átomos de oxigênio e, devido à sua instabilidade, é considerado um dos maiores agentes oxidantes do mundo, o que permite que este gás seja usado para diversos fins terapêuticos. Esta substância possui importantes efeitos antimicrobianos contra bactérias gram-negativas, que desempenham um forte papel na etiologia das doenças periodontais. Somando-se, ainda, possui um amplo espectro de atividade, mas com baixa toxicidade e não causa resistência bacteriana. A ozonioterapia mostra-se como um eficiente tratamento integrativo e complementar à raspagem e alisamento radicular, que por vezes pode ser insuficiente no tratamento das doenças periodontais. Contudo, novos estudos devem ser realizados para avaliar e determinar os parâmetros clínicos do ozônio.

The objective was to clinically and microbiologically evaluate local oxygen-ozone therapy used in combination with traditional mechanical therapy <em>versus</em> the use of mechanical therapy alone in a group of patients with periodontal disease. To date, this study is the most representative investigation in the scientific literature as it has the largest sample (113 patients). The project was fully completed in the planning phase, the experimental research stage, the statistical analysis phase and the scientific article draft phase. The results of the study showed a sharp reduction in the clinical-microbiological parameters measured for both study groups. In particular, subjects in the group treated with oxygen-ozone therapy plus mechanical therapy showed a more marked improvement. Although it is possible to observe a general trend of improvement in oral hygiene in Western countries, periodontal health remains a goal yet to be achieved in many subjects. In Italy, roughly 60% of the population suffers from periodontal disease (from mild to severe) and roughly 10-14% exhibit fairly advanced forms. The latter group increases dramatically in the age group between 35 and 44 years. The main objective of the clinician who is faced with a patient with periodontal disease is to adopt an appropriate therapeutic approach to halt the progression of the disease and to prevent or reduce the occurrence of any relapses. Mechanical causal therapy is the treatment of choice. However, due to the early recolonization of periodontal pockets by bacteria, various studies are underway in order to find a valid aid to mechanical therapy. In this regard, oxygenozone therapy may be an economic, non-invasive and easy method to implement in the clinical management of the patient with periodontal disease. One immediate application is the opportunity to use the treatment in selected patients, such as those who present a recurrence of the disease. For example, systemic antibiotic therapy could be replaced with local oxygen-ozone therapy in patients with periodontal abscess. However, additional longitudinal studies are needed to assess any exact range, timing and method of application.
