[Kotowaza in Cognitive Linguistic Analysis: The Use of Synecdoche]. This paper analyzes kotowaza using synecdoc through the study of cognitive linguistic. The background of this research is the difficulty of understanding relationships between the meanings of the kotowaza on foreign learners because of cultural differences and lack of dictionaries that support the process of understanding kotowaza deeply. The purpose of this research is to understand kotowaza deeply, determine the connection of these lexical-figurative meaning of Japanese proverbs using synecdoche based on the study of cognitive linguistics. The method used is a qualitative method in approach of cognitive linguistics. At the end of the study, it is concluded that synecdochecan be used to analyze the correlation between the lexical meaning and figurative meaning of kotowaza that contains a word or two which represents wider or smaller meaning such as kotowaza which related to the characteristics of an area or kotowaza that associated with number.

This research is entitled “The Construction of English Verb “SEND”: A Cognitive Linguistic Study”. It is based on cognitive linguistic, because with cognitive linguistic it could be seen how exactly the construction of English verb “send” and how the construction could have that construction. The aims of the research are; 1) to analyze the construction of English verb “SEND” as a single verb; and 2) to analyze the Construction of English verb "SEND" as a phrasal verb. The data will be collected by using observation method and noting technique. Then, it will be analyzed by using distributional method with expansion, ellipsis, and immediate constituent division. All data that have been collected and analyzed will then be described by qualitative method. As a result, there would be two main outcome found in this research. First, the construction of English verb “send” in the form of single verb, those are English verb “send” as single verb in intransitive construction, transitive construction and ditransitive construction. Second, the construction of English verb “send” in the form of phrasal verb, those are English verb “send” as phrasal verb in intransitive construction, transitive construction, and ditransitive construction.

This paper is entitled “Competition Frame on MotoGP Articles: A Cognitive Linguistic Approach.” This research is aimed to identify two main points: (1) the elements of the competition frame found in MotoGP articles and (2) to identify the most frequent element that occurs in MotoGP articles. This research employs the syntactic approach and uses the descriptive qualitative method. The siginificance of this study is to give information about the competition frame on sport articles as part of linguistic variety. The result of this research shows there are six elements used on the articles: competition, participant, place, prize, rank and score and value. Then, the most frequent words that occur on the MotoGP articles are dominated by the participant elements (92.85%) and rank and score elements (28.57%).Key words: frame semantic, cognitive linguistics, competition element

Applying concepts of Cognitive Linguistics to dialectological data of a traditional kind, the present paper addresses the question whether differences of culture and conceptualization could be detected language-internally, not just across languages. At the same time, it shows that the traditional methodology of evaluating dialectological data at the level of language structure can be challenged by a usage-based cognitive linguistic analysis. The language variant in focus is the Moldavian Southern Csango, an archaic Hungarian dialect. We investigate the conceptualization of forty internal qualities (emotions and character traits) on the basis of two usage-based types of analysis: one in which we try to determine the entrenchment of the investigated concepts, and one in which we have a look at the semantic relationships between them. The two approaches provide converging evidence that negative concepts are more elaborated in the mind of the Csangos and that the most crucial factor organizing their conceptual system is “morality”.

This study trying to describe the relationship between lexical meaning and the idiomatical meaning of ‘ki’ in the Japanese language idioms  and ‘hati’in Indonesian language Idiom by using perspective of cognitive linguistic. This study classified as a basic research category, because this research was conducted to find new theories about how idioms get to motivated from the relationship between lexical meaning and idiomatic meaning in the cognitive linguistics point of view, finds differences and similarities between Japanese and Indonesian idioms. Then contrasted the idioms using the matching techniques of linguistics. From the analysis result, it can be seen that there are idioms from both languages that have different lexical meanings, but have similar idiomatic meanings. That happens because there are similarities between the point of view in looking at the ki and hati, even though there are cultural differences. It was also found that between ki idioms and hati, ki idioms have a more variants, in one category of idioms which has the same idiomatic meaning than hati idioms. Then from both ki idioms and hati idioms, some idioms show an extension of idiomatic meanings that are more broader than the basic idiomatic meanings, where it shows the emergence of polysemic meanings of some ki idioms and hati idioms.

Abstract The first part of this paper outlines the relevant aspects of functional structuralism serving lexicographers as a departure point for building a model of lexical meaning useable in the Dictionary of Contemporary Slovak Language. This section also points to some aspects of Klára Buzássyová’s research on lexis and word­formation that have enriched the functional­structuralist paradigm. The second section shows other theoretical and methodological frameworks, such as linguistic pragmatics, cognitive linguistics and corpus linguistics (all of them departing in some respect from the structuralism and, in other aspects, being complementary with it) that can enhance the structuralist basis of the model. The third section outlines an extended model of lexical meaning that represents a synthesis of all those theoretical frameworks and, at the same time, represents a reflection of three language constituents: 1. The social constituent is present in consideration of communicative functions of utterances, naming functions of lexical units, functional styles and registers, language norms, and situational contexts; 2. The psychological component takes the form of consideration of the prototype effect, the abolition of boundaries between linguistic meaning and other parts of cognition; 3. Thanks to the structural/systematic component, a description of paradigmatic and syntagmatic behaviour of words can be performed, and an inventory of formal­content units and categories (lexemes, lexies, word­forming and grammatical structures) can be provided. In our dictionary practice, the above­mentioned model is reflected in the methodological procedures as follows: 1. Systemization of repetitive (regular, standardized) phenomena; 2. Prototypicalization of meaning description; 3. Contextualization/encyclopedization of meaning description; 4. Pragmatization of meaning description; 5. Continualized presentation of language phenomena, i.e., introduction of numerous phenomena of transient and indeterminate nature and indicating the existence of a semantic­pragmatic and lexical­grammatical continuum; 6. “Discretization” of combinatorial continuum, i.e., identification and description of entrenched word combinations with naming functions.

Abstract Under the theoretical wing of Conceptual Metaphor Theory, we present a contrastive cognitive and linguistic analysis of the women are animals metaphor as used in Romanian and Serbian. Our main aim is to establish whether the names of the same animals are used in the two languages to conceptualise women and their various characteristics (particularly physical appearance and character traits), or alternatively, whether the two languages exhibit any linguistic or conceptual differences in this regard.

<p>This paper will approach two of Nabokov’s poems from the perspective of embodied realism in Cognitive Linguistics. We will shed light on the reasons why we believe that Nabokov makes use of the DIVIDED SELF metaphor in his poetry. In the analysis of the poems we will explain how the Subject is understood in the author’s life in exile whereas the Self is understood in the author’s feelings of anguish and longing for his Russian past. Finally, we will also explain how Nabokov’s use of the DIVIDED SELF metaphor thematically structures both poems.</p>

A proper name is not only an identity for people or things around but also organization and com- munity. The Processes behind naming are presented and explained in various ways to give the new insight of creating a name. This research deals with the lexicon of lum for naming used on groups of dynamism community. To explore the nature of lexical meaning, qualitative method was used in this research with descriptive approach. As an adverb class in Bangka language daily spoken, the lexicon was analysed by semantic pragmatics perspective to investigate the meaning of its name. The result showed that the lexicon of lum becomes a name for dinamism community as “lum tribe” originally has conotation meaning and increases missunderstanding problems among the community in Belinyu.

This is the first textbook on metaphor to appear after the cognitive linguistic revolution of metaphorical research launched two decades ago by Lakoff & Johnson with their pioneering work, Metaphors we live by. Much scholarship has since been devoted to this paradigm of research. Twenty years have passed, and Kövecses takes this as a good time to summarize the development of the field. Writing a textbook on metaphor certainly reflects the maturation of the study of metaphor within the cognitive linguistic tradition. Targeted readers are undergraduate and graduate students with interests in metaphor and cognitive linguistics. Experienced researchers may also find this book helpful in motivating new ideas.
