AbstractGreen/Sustainable Chemistry is the scientific platform where chemists are contributing from different areas to develop modern and efficient processes aimed at minimizing the environmental impact of chemical production. To reach these goals scientists, from both academia and industry, need to strongly focus their fundamental and innovative research towards the application of modern principles of Green Chemistry. In this contribution a description of our efforts in this direction is presented.

Solvents are widely recognized to be of great environmental concern. The reduction of their use is one of the most important aims of green chemistry. In addition to this, the appropriate selection of solvent for a process can greatly improve the sustainability of a chemical production process. There has also been extensive research into the application of so-called green solvents, such as ionic liquids and supercritical fluids. However, most examples of solvent technologies that give improved sustainability come from the application of well-established solvents. It is also apparent that the successful implementation of environmentally sustainable processes must be accompanied by improvements in commercial performance.

The relevance of this topic is linked to the need to understand the way in which Asian countries develop theoretical musicology in active cross-cultural communication. This work examines Xiao Youmei (1884–1940), one of the most outstanding representatives of Chinese music culture in the first half of the XXth century. His contribution to Chinese music education and science include the organization of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music (1927), the upgrading of national musicology and the development of the first textbooks on music theory and history for training specialists. Of particular importance is Xiao Youmei's educational activities, related to the study of European music and the definition of the main directions in its research. The article mainly discusses the methods used by the Chinese musicologist in introducing European music to the students of the first music educational institutions in China. Theoretical and historical problems of European music are taught in Xiao Youmei’s textbooks: "Essays on the History of Western Music" (1920–1923), "General Musicology" (1928), "Harmony" (1932). They were distinguished by the following features: an overview principle of the presentation of the material, an expansion of the range of languages used by the term authors, several musical examples and a lack of scientific resources, which is explained by the stage of origin of the music educational system and scientific platform in China in the first decades of the XXth century. One of the main features of the content expressed in Xiao Youmei's textbooks is the correlation between various parameters of Chinese and European music. The paper provides examples illustrating the method of using the notions of one thinking system to explain the other (in the field of harmony, instrumental science). It is explained by the transitional stage in the formation of Chinese musicology — from the old system of notation to the new one.

In compatibility with actual recommendations and policy which leads to improvement and preservation of integral environment and especially its natural values, it is necessary to implement active and integral approach to all variety of planning documents. In order to visualize the impact of highway through Belgrade on its surroundings, the solutions of the traffic artery were analyzed from the aspect of the protection of the environment in the sense of definition of harmful impacts and proposals of measures for their prevention or removal. The basic starting point was to get the answer whether and which, from ecological aspect, protection measures should be taken. The paper will show specific details of making the Belgrade highway environmental impact study.

The presented methodology has two fundamental goals: first, to foster greener design practices among airport managers, planners, and designers, and second, to establish a dynamic dialogue between all airport stakeholders, while overcoming the shortcomings of traditional environmental impact assessments and thus ensuring capacity enhancement. The innovative aspects of the methodology are the combination of a flexible implementation strategy, the use of Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) with cost and utility functions, and a structured definition of environmental sustainability with customized evaluation parameters.

In the field of synthetic biology, enzymatic pathways are used to enhance the efficiency of chemical production processes. These pathways consist of micro reactors that are filled with porous media and enzymes that catalyze the partial reactions. In the present study we summarize the requirements of the micro reactors used for these applications and give an overview of the different problems that have to be solved. Furthermore we present the idea of a generic demonstrator as a research tool. In the interdisciplinary field of synthetic biology it can enhance the interaction between different groups. It will serve as a common base for numerically as well as for experimentally working groups. We propose a definition of a generic demonstrator for a micro fluidic reactor as it is typically used in this field. Besides, present work of our group is presented, that analyzes the flow field in the micro channels of the reaction zone that is filled with porous media. We show how computational costs can be saved by studying the entry lengths of these channels.

This paper reports an overview of Green Chemistry and the concept of its twelve principles. This study focusses on the ninth principle of Green Chemistry, that is, catalysis. A report on catalysis, in line with its definition, background, classification, properties, and applications, is provided. The study also entails a green element called bismuth. Bismuth’s low toxicity and low cost have made researchers focus on its wide applications in catalysis. It exhibits smartness in all the catalytic activities with the highest catalytic performance among other metals.
