Sustainable Skyscrapers: A Review of Green Features

Increasingly, architects and engineers are interested in pursuing sustainable design. Yet, they lack sources that summarize best practices. As such, this review paper maps out and examines prominent examples of "sustainable" skyscrapers of varying geographic locations, climates, and socio-cultural contexts. It discusses the design themes and green features of "LEED skyscrapers" and elaborates on recent developments in architecture and engineering. The presented 12 case studies do not intend to evaluate LEED rating systems. Instead, they illustrate how LEED has advanced the green design agenda and encouraged the pursuit of innovative design and engineering solutions. The mapped-out green features in this article should be helpful to all professionals interested in green architecture.

This paper deals with sustainable design and construction, since the interest in and the awareness of green design has grown dramatically in the past several years and the different rating systems used worldwide the main focus will be on LEED; the different LEED certifications available, the process of the certifications, and the criteria on which the certification consider. Additionally, it will relate its new trends with each other by showing how building information modeling can be used to achieve a sustainable design. The powerful tools of building information modeling (BIM) will be discussed that can ease and aid the process of the LEED certification of a building. This paper also reports a demonstration pertinent to the implementation BIM can provide to achieve a sustainable green design. Two case studies are investigated; the first case study is a LEED Gold certified 128-story tower in Shanghai, China while the second is a LEED Platinum certified 13-Story building in San Francisco, USA.

Public concern over the deleterious effects of atmospheric deposition (AD) has grown rapidly due to its adverse effects (teratogenicity, toxicity, and carcinogenicity) to human, animals, and materials. The aim of this review is to describe the effect of the AD on sculptures, measures for its reduction, and case studies on maintenances of sculptures against the AD. To this end, a step-by-step review is outlined to discuss the harmful effect of AD contamination on many important sculptures. The review paper is also extended to describe preventive steps to reduce AD on sculptures to help reduce the risks associated with AD.

Nowadays, a lot of people engage in unsustainable daily behavior unconsciously, although most of them worry about the state of our natural environment. Designers can find ideas in people’s unconscious saving behavior and wasting behavior, and then realize these ideas into design. Based upon the case studies, the paper gives hints how to realize ideas derived from unconscious behavior into sustainable design.
