Introduction: The anatomy of the knee and its ligaments is clearly described in the relevant literature; however, several studies have found new structures associated with this joint, such as the anterolateral ligament (ALL) of the knee. The prevalence of this ligament varies a lot around the world, and studies addressing this topic in Colombian population are scarce. Objective: To determine the prevalence of ALL and its morphometric characteristics in a sample of Colombian human cadavers. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional study in which the knee joints of 15 human cadavers were dissected and analyzed. In order to ensure the integrity of anatomical structures such as ligaments and tendons, specimens should have not undergone previous dissections, so only 29 knees were included for analysis. The presence of the ligament was verified, and the proximal and distal insertion site, as well as its length and width, were established through the dissection. Results: The prevalence of ALL was 24.13%, as it was identified in 7 of the 29 dissected knees (4 left and 3 right knees). The average length and width of the ALLs found were 37.5mm (range: 24-52.4mm) and 3.9mm (range: 2.6-6mm), respectively. Conclusions: This study allowed confirming the presence of the ALL in Colombian population, although with a lower prevalence than that described in countries such as France, India, China, USA and Brazil. In turn, its morphometric characteristics were similar to those reported worldwide, since the average length and width found here are consistent with those described in the literature.

A cross-sectional study of secondary data/information obtained from the Hospital Information System (HIS) spanning the years 2008 - 2009 was performed. The distribution of the main hospital admissions by gender, age, color/race, region and federal unit of residence, average expenditure and average length of hospital stay, year of hospitalization and mortality rates (MR) were studied. The data collected were tabulated by TabNet and keyed into Microsoft Excel 2007. It was verified that elderly males (54.3%), from 60 to 69 years old (50.6%), nonwhites (36.3%) and residents of Southeast and North regions of the country had the highest rates of hospitalization. Seniors were hospitalized for an average of 4.8 days, and the major causes were exposure to alcohol (43.7%) and to drugs (33.9%). Expenses related to hospital admissions were, on average, R$ 529,817.70. The highest mortality rates were recorded among females (MR = 4.34), in elderly, 80 years or older (MR = 10.16) and Caucasians (MR = 3.95), where pharmacological substances with action on the Autonomic Nervous System were the leading cause of death. There are demographic differences in morbi-mortality of these elderly since, although men and younger elderly were the main victims, women and elderly of advanced age have greater mortality. The leading causes of hospitalization were alcohol and drugs.

Background. Globally, 1.2 billion people live in trachoma endemic areas, 40.6 million people are suffering from active trachoma, and 48.5% of the global burden of active trachoma is distributed in five countries including Ethiopia. However, there is no evidence or no conducted survey/research data or document regarding trachoma prevalence in Areka Town. We, therefore, did a study to assess the prevalence of active trachoma and associated factors in Areka Town in South Ethiopia. Methods. A community-based cross-sectional study was employed. A total of 586 children aged 1–9 years were involved. We compiled a structured questionnaire from the relevant literature and pretested before use. A range of data was collected on the sociodemographic, facility, and service-related, and environmental factors. The outcome variable was measured by using frequencies, cross-tabulation, and percent. Multivariate logistic regression was applied to control potential confounders and to identify the predictors. Results. This study revealed that 37.9% of children aged 1–9 years have active trachoma (95% CI: 34%–42%). Households without latrine (AOR = 6.88; 95% CI: 2.13–22.18), openly disposing domestically produced waste (AOR = 4.62; 95% CI: 2.41–8.83), cooking in the same room (AOR = 5.13; 95% CI: 2.21–11.88), and using the cooking room without a window (AOR = 2.28; 95% CI: 1.11–4.69) were more likely to have their children develop active trachoma. Similarly, children with caretakers having inadequate knowledge about trachoma (AOR = 8.10; 95% CI: 2.04–32.17) were more likely to develop active trachoma. However, households consuming more than 20 liters of water per day were 82% (AOR = 0.18; 95% CI: 0.07–0.44) less likely to have their children develop active trachoma while compared to those consuming less than the figure. Conclusions. The prevalence of active trachoma in the children aged 1–9 years in the study area was found to be high, and it is much higher than the WHO elimination threshold.

Background: Given the higher incidence of psychotic disorders in patients with epilepsy, several neurologists and psychiatrists have attempted to explain this controversial comorbidity. Thus, several hypotheses have been put forward but no link has been established with certainty until today. Objectives: The aim of our work is to draw up a socio-demographic and psychopathological profile of patients with schizophrenia-epilepsy comorbidity as well as to assess the risk of suicide, the management, the reasons for admission and the length of hospitalization. Methodology: we conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study on medical records of patients with schizophrenia and epilepsy who were hospitalized at the Ar-Razi University Psychiatric Hospital in Salé between January 01, 2017 and March 31, 2021. Results: Our study included 56 patients. The average age was 33 + / - 9.83, 55% male. 50% of patients had attempted suicide in the past and 25% had a history of depressive episode, 41.1% had substance use disorder and 26.8% had a family history of psychosis. 85.7% of our patients developed schizophrenia from pre-existing epilepsy the time to onset of schizophrenia compared to epilepsy was 11.08 years +/- 7.71. The mean age of onset of schizophrenia is 23.3 years with a mean duration of progression of 9.18 years, 55.4% of patients were on monotherapy and 8.9% had resistant schizophrenia on clozapine. The average age of onset of epilepsy is 14.73 years, with generalized epilepsy in 84% of cases. The average length of stay is 42 days. The reasons for admission were as follows: hetero-aggression 78.6%, delusional verbalization 85.7% and suicide attempt 23.2%. The majority of our patients have been treated with atypical antipsychotics: Risperidone 30.4%, Amisulpride 21.4% and Aripiprazole 12.5%. Conclusion: The co-occurrence of schizophrenia epilepsy suggests the existence of possible common etiopathogenic factors. The management of this comorbidity requires a multidisciplinary collaboration between neurologist and psychiatrist, in order to confirm the diagnosis, establish a good therapeutic approach and propose a management algorithm taking into account the two pathologies.

Introduction: Migraine is one of the most common headaches and a frequent population complaint, presenting different symptoms and intensities. Objective: The objective is to carry out an epidemiological survey and the average length of hospital stay in the southern states of Brazil. Methodology: This is an epidemiological, descriptive and cross-sectional study. Design and setting: Is a carried out using data collected from DATASUS, during 2020 year in southern Brazil. Results: In the proposed period, there were 2,662 hospitalizations, with the state of PR the largest number (1,760). As for the average hospitalization, the RS stands out with 4 days, SC presents 2.8 and PR with 2.3. Regarding the age group, in PR it is between 40-49 years old, SC between 30-39 and in RS 50-59. As for gender, the prevalence is higher among women, with 63.11% of the total. Conclusion:The data are in agreement with the literature, confirming that women are more affected, being justified by numerous factors, from hormonal variations to different responses to the perception of stress and pain. The high average length of hospitalizations indicates the need to develop policies to discuss the issue, providing adequate prophylaxis and therapy, reducing the number of the cases, the intensity of crises and hospitalizations.

Humans infected by Toxoplasma gondii express no specific symptoms but manifest higher incidence of many diseases, disorders and differences in personality and behaviour. The aim of this study was to compare the political beliefs and values of Toxoplasma-infected and Toxoplasma-free participants. We measured beliefs and values of 2315 responders via an online survey (477 Toxoplasma-infected) using the Political Beliefs and Values Inventory (PI34). This study showed Toxoplasma-infected and Toxoplasma-free participants of our cross-sectional study differed in three of four factors of PI34, scoring higher in Tribalism and lower in Cultural liberalism and Anti-Authoritarianism. We found sex differences in political beliefs associated with Toxoplasma infection. Infected women scored higher in tribalism and lower in cultural liberalism, compared with the Toxoplasma-free control group, while infected men scored higher in economic equity. These results fit with sexual differences in behaviour and attitude observed after toxoplasmosis infection. Controlling for the effect of worse physical health and mental health had little impact, suggesting that impaired health did not cause these changes. Rather than adaptation to prevalence of parasites, as suggested by parasite-stress theory, the differences might be side-effects of long-term mild inflammatory re-action, although definitive conclusions cannot be reached due to lack of relevant literature.

Background: Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy are responsible for significant amount of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. This study was designed to see the association of umbilical cord insretion on placenta in hypertensive mothers. Objective: This purpose of the present stufdy was to find out the site of umbilical cord insertion on placenta in pregnancy associated with hypertension and to correlate it with the weight of the placenta and the condition of the newborn. Methodology: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Anatomy, Rajshahi Medical College and Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Rajshahi Medical College & Hospital, Bangladesh. Placental weight, diameter, thickness, insertion site of umbilical cord, insertion percentage of the cord and weight of newborn were noted. The site of cord insertion was detected and insertion percentage was calculated with the help of d/r x 100. Results: A total 130 cases were selected for the study, 30 from normal, 33 from mild, 34 from moderate and 33 from severe hypertensive group respectively. The study demonstrated that mild to severe hypertension had smaller placentas with the tendency of deviation of umbilical cord towards the margin for insertion. Newborns of such mothers had low birth weight mostly; few of them had birth asphyxia. Conclusion: This study has been established that the marginal insertion of umbilical cord on placenta is associated with hypertension and severity of hypertension deviates the insertion site towards the margin.Journal of National Institute of Neurosciences Bangladesh, 2016;2(2): 89-93
