Tanaman selada merupakan sayuran yang dikonsumsi dalam bentuk segar. Karakteristiknya sebagai tanaman akumulator nitrat perlu diimbangi pemupukan N dan aplikasi Silika (Si) sesuai kebutuhan tanaman. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari interaksi ekstrak silika sekam padi (ESSP) dan N-total, serta memperoleh konsentrasi  ESSP dan N-total yang tepat untuk menghasilkan panen selada yang tinggi tetapi aman bagi kesehatan. Rancangan penelitian yang digunakan adalah Rancangan Acak Lengkap Faktorial, faktor pertama adalah konsentrasi ESSP (0 ppm, 30 ppm, 60 ppm, 90 ppm) dan faktor kedua adalah konsentrasi N-total (100 ppm, 200 ppm, 300 ppm), setiap kombinasi perlakuan diulang 3 kali. Parameter yang diamati yaitu tinggi tanaman 35 hari setelah tanam (HST), luas daun, berat kering tanaman, berat segar tanaman, kandungan nitrat pada daun selada. Data dianalisis dengan analisis varians taraf 5% dilanjutkan dengan Uji Jarak Berganda Duncan pada taraf nyata 5%, sedangkan parameter kandungan nitrat dianalisis secara deskriptif. Berdasarkan hasil analisis varians konsentrasi ESSP dan konsentrasi N-total berinteraksi pada tinggi tanaman dan berpengaruh mandiri terhadap berat kering tanaman dan berat segar tanaman. Aplikasi ekstrak silika sekam padi 30 ppm meningkatkan hasil panen 28% lebih tinggi dan menurunkan 12% kandungan nitrat tanaman selada pada N total 100-300 ppm.AbstractLettuce is a freshly consumed vegetable. Its characteristics as a nitrate accumulator plant need to be balanced with N fertilization and Silica (Si) applications according to the plant required. This research aimed to study the interaction between rice husk silica extract (ESSP) and total N to obtain the right ESSP and total N concentrations to produce high yield lettuce and safely consumed it. This study used a factorial completely randomized design. The first factor was ESSP concentrations (0 ppm, 30 ppm, 60 ppm, 90 ppm) and the second factor was total N concentrations (100 ppm, 200 ppm, 300 ppm). Each treatment combination was repeated 3 times. The parameters observed were plant height in 35 days after planting, leaf area, plant dry weight, fresh plant weight, and nitrat e content in lettuce leaves. The  data  were  analyzed  by analysis of variance at the 5%, and post-test by DMRT at the 5% significant level, the nitrate content used descriptive analysis. Based on the analysis of variance, ESSP concentration and total N concentration interacted on plant height. The ESSP concentration and total N concentration independently affected plant dry weight and fresh plant weight. Application of 30 ppm rice husk silica extract increased 28% higher yield and decreased 12% nitrate content of lettuce plants at N-total of 100-300 ppm.

Tall bearded (TB) iris (Iris germanica L.) has great potential as a specialty cut flower due to its fragrance and showy, multicolor display; however, limited research has been reported on optimal nitrogen (N) nutrient management for TB iris. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of N fertilizer rate on plant growth and flowering of ‘Immortality’ iris and determine the influence of both stored N and spring-applied N fertilizer on spring growth and flowering. On 14 Mar. 2012, rhizomes of ‘Immortality’ iris were potted in a commercial substrate with no starter fertilizer. Plants were fertigated with 0, 5, 10, 15, or 20 mm N from NH4NO3 twice per week from 28 Mar. to 28 Sept. 2012. In 2013, half of the plants from each of the 2012 N rate were supplied with either 0 or 10 mm N from 15NH415NO3 twice per week from 25 Mar. to 7 May 2013. Growth and flowering data including plant height, leaf SPAD, number of fans and inflorescence stems, and length of inflorescence stem were collected during the growing season. Plants were harvested in Dec. 2012 and May 2013 to measure dry weight and N concentration in leaves, roots, and rhizomes. Results showed higher 2012 N rates increased plant height, leaf SPAD reading, and number of inflorescence stems at first and second blooming in 2012. Greater 2012 N rates also increased plant dry weight and N content in all structures, and N concentration in roots and rhizomes. Rhizomes (58.8% to 66.3% of total N) were the dominant sink for N in Dec. 2012. Higher 2012 N rates increased plant height, number of fans, and the number of inflorescence stems at spring bloom in 2013. In May 2013, N in leaf tissue constituted the majority (51% to 64.3%) of the total plant N. Higher 2012 N rates increased total dry weight, N concentration, and N content in all 2013 15N rates; however, leaf dry weight in all plants was improved by 2013 15N rate. Percentage of tissue N derived from 2013 15N (NDFF) decreased with increasing 2012 N rate. New spring leaves were the dominant sink (56.8% to 72.2%) for 2013 applied 15N. In summary, ‘Immortality’ iris is capable of a second blooming in a growing season, this second blooming dependent on N fertilization rate in current year. A relatively high N rate is recommended to produce a second bloom.

The paitan plant contains allelopathic compounds for other plants so that the utilize of paitan plant as a source of liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) has not been widely applied. This research aimed to study the interaction between LOF dosage and appropriate application method of LOF to increase the growth of kailan plants. The research conducted at experimental garden of UIN Bandung from June-August 2016. The experimental design was a completely randomized design with two factors and replicated four times. The first factor was application methods (A), i.e. a1=direct application to the soil, and a2= spraying. The second factor was LOF dosage (T), i.e. t0: 0 ml plant-1, t1: 20 ml plant-1, t2: 40 ml plant-1, t3: 60 ml plant-1, t4: 80 ml plant-1. The growth parameters observed i.e. plant height (14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 Day after Transplanting (DAT)), leaf area 42 DAT, plant dry weight 42 DAT, and plant fresh weight 42 DAT. The data then analyzed with analysis of variance at a significant level of 5%. If the analysis of variance was significant, the Duncan multiple range test was used at α=5%. The research results showed there was no interaction between method of application with a various dosage of paitan LOF to all of the growth parameters. The application paitan LOF showed similar growth in terms of plant height, leaf area, plant dry, and plant fresh weight. The application method of paitan LOF direct to the soil or spraying to leaves can not increase kailan plant growth.

The responses of the nitrophytic green algal lichen Xanthoria parietina to varying nitrogen (N) concentrations were investigated by collecting 67 X. parietina thalli from clay roof tiles from 13 sites in Portugal with different exposures to N. Concentrations of total N, chlorophyll a (a marker for the photobiont), ergosterol (a marker for the mycobiont), and thallus specific weight (TSW; thallus dry weight in relation to surface area) were quantified for each thallus to see how biont investments were related to thallus N concentrations. Thallus N ranged from 11 to 43 mg g−1 DW revealing a wider N concentration range in this lichen compared to other green algal lichen species. Both chlorophyll a and ergosterol concentrations increased with increasing thallus N, with a steeper increase of the photobiont marker. TSW was similar in all thalli without any significant effect of thallus N concentration, suggesting that thallus developmental patterns are similar in low and high thallus N concentrations. The relatively higher resource allocation to the photobiont in relation to the mycobiont with increasing thallus N concentrations is an indication of the capacity of X. parietina to meet the C demands associated with N assimilation. This result is also in agreement with the inter-specific resource allocation pattern for green algal lichens across the same N concentration range.

Weeds represent a major constraint for successful pea cultivation, resulting in loss of green pea yield and quality. Two field experiments were carried out during the winter seasons of 2018/2019 and 2019/2020. The objectives of the current study were to evaluate the efficacy of pendimethalin, butralin, fluazifop butyl, bentazon, and hoeing on weed control, and their impact on pea growth, nodule formation, yield, quality, and storability. The results indicated that hoeing and fluazifop butyl were the most effective treatments for weed control in terms of the lowest values of total weed dry weight. The bentazon and fluazifop butyl herbicides didn’t affect active nodules number, plant height, plant weight, root length, or number of leaves and branches. Additionally, bentazon and hoeing resulted in the highest total yield per plant and protein content. Butralin and pendimetalin achieved the lowest yield, and butralin also resulted in the lowest plant height and weight. Bentazon-treated peas had the highest chemical compositions in terms of chlorophyll, carotenoids, total sugar, and vitamin C contents in pea pods at harvest and during cold storage at 4 °C and 95 RH for 45 days. No detectable residues of the four herbicides under study were detected in green pods, suggesting that pods can be safely consumed at the time of harvesting. It can be concluded that nodules formation in pea was not affected significantly by the application of the tested herbicides, except pendimethalin and butralin. Furthermore, bentazon had a positive impact on nodules formation and pods quality and could be used effectively for controlling the broadleaf weeds, and it was simultaneously a selective and safe herbicide in pea cultivation.

Provision of Rice Husk Ash and Rice Straw for Growth of Sweet Corn (Zea Mays L) in Ultisol Land in Rantau Selatan District Labuhan Batu District aims to determine the effect of various types of rice husk ash and rice straw for growth and nutrient uptake of Sweet Corn experimental methods. The method used in this study was compiled in a factorial randomized block design consisting of 2 factors with 3 replications. Treatment I: Giving rice husk ash (M) with 4 dose levels (g / 5 kg BTKO), namely: M0 (0), M1 (10 ), M2 (20) and M3 (30) and Treatment II: Giving rice straw (K) compost with 4 dose levels (g / 5 kg BTKO), namely: K0 (0), K1 (25), K2 (50), K3 (75). The data obtained were statistically analyzed based on analysis of variance on each observed variable that was measured and tested further for real treatment using the Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at the 5% level. The parameters measured consist of. Plant height (cm), Plant Dry Weight, Plant U uptake, Plant U Uptake. The results of this study indicate that the administration of rice straw compost has a significant effect in increasing plant height, plant dry weight, N uptake and P uptake while rice husk ash has a significant effect in increasing plant N uptake but has no significant effect in increasing plant height, plant dry weight and P uptake of plants. Keywords: husk ash, rice straw, growth, nutrient uptake, corn, Rantau selatan

Massive breeding is often the case with the availability of the amount of water that can be stored on the media. The aim of this research is to know the influence of media and the frequency of watering on the growth of robusta coffee seedlings and to find the best media and optimum watering frequency. This experiment was conducted at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Sumatera Utara, Medan from June to September 2017. The experimental method used was Factorial Randomized Block Design with 2 treatment factors, ie 1: planting medium ie, topsoil ; topsoil: sand (2: 1); topsoil: rice husk (2: 1), topsoil: charcoal husk (2: 1) and factor 2: watering frequency ie, watered once a day; watered every 4 days; watered 7 days and watered once every 10 days. The variable was plant height, stem diameter, total leaf number, total leaf area, fresh crown weight, canopy dry weight, fresh root weight, root dry weight, longest root, and canopy and root ratio. The results showed that planting media treatment had a significant effect on plant height variables, stem diameter increase, leaf number, total leaf area, fresh crown weight, canopy dry weight, fresh root weight, root dry weight, and root canopy ratio. The best treatment of planting medium was found in topsoil treatment: rice husk (2: 1). The treatment of watering frequency had a significant effect on the stem diameter 2 - 12 of the week after planting move observation variable, total leaf area, fresh crown weight, dry crown weight, fresh root weight, and dry weight of roots. The best treatment frequency of watering hose is watering every 4 days. The interaction between the two treatments had a significant effect on the diameter of the stem diameter variable, the total leaf area and the fresh weight of the canopy.

Variability and diversity of Phyllanthus amarus Schum. & Thonn., an important medicinal plant species, in its natural habitats in Kerala State of India was analyzed based on the observations on eleven salient morphological characters recorded from thirty populations of the species distributed across Palakkad, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts. Among the eleven characters studied, seven characters such as plant height, number of brachyblasts, number of leaves per brachyblast, leaf breadth, length between adjacent brachyblasts, number of flowers per brachyblast and fresh weight of plants showed statistically significant difference between the populations. The interrelationship between the characters and their association was also studied. Fresh plant weight showed significant positive correlation with five characters. Number of brachyblasts and number of leaves per brachyblast showed significant positive correlation with four characters each. Number of branches and number of flowers per brachyblast showed significant positive correlation with three characters each. Plant height, leaf length and leaf area showed significant positive correlation with one character each and length of branches, leaf breadth and length between adjacent brachyblasts showed no significant correlation with anyone of the characters studied. By factor analysis four factors could be extracted and number of branches, fresh plant weight, length of branches and leaf breath were found to be the lead characters. Highly significant variability with regard to most of the morphological characters indicates that Phyllanthus amarus populations in the study area are presently stable and diverse. But care should be taken to protect its gene pool from damages due to natural as well as man made interferences.

A pot experiment was carried out in semi-controlled condition at the Department of Agronomy, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur from November 2015 to March 2016 to assess the effect of organic amendments to mitigate salinity stress in Soybean var. BARI soybean 5. Two types of organic amendments i) water hyacinth compost and ii) rice husk biochar were mixed in soil @ 5 and 10 t ha-1 of both. Saline solution was prepared by adding tap water in seawater to make 5 and 10 dS m-1 salinity respectively. Plants were irrigated with the salt solution from 14th day after sowing (DAS) to maturity and the control plants were irrigated with tap water. Data on different parameters like plant height, leaf, stem, root dry matter and yield contributing parameters were recorded at harvest. Experimental results revealed that salinity decreased plant height, dry weight of leaf, stem and root as well as yield of soybean plant-1. Application of water hyacinth compost and rice husk biochar had positive effects on mitigating the negative effects of salinity stress on all those parameters studied. However, rice husk biochar at the rate of 5 t ha-1 showed best result to mitigate salinity stress at low salinity (5 dSmdS m-1 condition. Bangladesh Agron. J. 2018, 21(1): 39-50

This study aims to study the effect of composition of doses of chicken manure and rice husk ash on the growth and production of soybean (Glycine max) on peat soils. This research was conducted in the month of February 2013 to June 2013 in the Tembilahan Hulu Village, Tembilahan Hulu District, Indragiri Hilir Regency. Initial soil analysis was carried out at the BPTP Yogyakarta Laboratory. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 3 replications and 3 replications, namely without treatment and treatment of chicken manure doses in the same 3 treatments namely 2500 kg / ha, for rice husk ash using 500 kg / ha, 1000 kg / ha and 1500 kg / ha, so that the combination can be repeated in 3 replications so that there are 12 experimental units, each experimental unit consists of 10 plant pots. The parameters observed were soil chemical properties, plant height, number of effective root nodules (100%), percentage of pithed pods, number of seeds / plants, weight of 100 seeds (grams). The data can be analyzed statistically, if the F count is greater than the F table followed by the Tukey HSD test at the 5% level. The results showed that the combination of chicken manure and rice husk ash was significantly different from plant height and weight of 100 seeds. In the parameters of the number of effective root nodules (100%), the percentage of effective root nodules, the percentage of pithed pods, the dry weight of seeds / plants, showed no significant effect. The best weight of 100 soybean seeds is found in the combination dose of 2500 kg chicken / ha chicken manure and 1000 kg / ha of rice husk ash which is 16.20 g.
