Nowadays, successful books cover design play a major role in selling books, but increasingly, book publishers use stereotypes and artistic expressions that can change their buyers, for example, using outworn natural sights, celebrity photos, or simply embodying clustering clippings. It is important to make the book noticeable, make design to interest and to “talk” with the client, to create an association or interest about the book, and, in the end, to buy it. Very often the book cover design concept helps to realize this aspect, which is closely related to consumer associations.Aim of the article: To study and analyze the use of stereotypes and cliches in the book design of book covers.Research methods used: theoretical: research and analysis of literature related to the sector and Internet resources.

This study explores the use of the Internet by medical practitioners in private hospitals in Warri Delta State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was adopted and questionnaire was the instrument used to collect data. The total population and sample for the study were 137 medical practitioners from 30 private hospitals in Warri. Findings revealed that most medical practitioners used the Internet on a regular basis; a majority of the medical practitioners started using the Internet between 1 – 5 years ago; most of the medical practitioners spend 2 – 5 hours using the Internet per visit; a majority of medical practitioners used the Internet without assistance. Medline, journals and PubMed were the Internet resources used by most of the medical practitioners. Internet use enables the respondents to improve patient care, keep up-to-date; high cost of Internet access and lack of access to the Internet were some of the problems facing most of medical practitioners. The study recommends that hospital management should provide their medical practitioners with Internet facilities to enable them access to the most recent and accurate information for effective service delivery. By paying close attention to the material body of the book, Max Ernst’s (1891–1976) oeuvre extends beyond literature and represents a significant contribution to the artist’s book in the 20th century. In his book design, Ernst emphasises the importance of the body of the book and thus seamlessly puts theory into practice. By drawing on this curatorial project as well as the current scholarship on the materiality of the book, the article focuses on two topics: first, it presents an overview of Max Ernst’s largely unknown poetic and essayistic work, including the discovery of a document that was lost for 65 years. Second, it is a case study of the material body of a book about books. By quoting and transforming Ernst’s book designs, the graphic designers implemented a very surprising postmodern design concept.

Drawing on contemporary and historical examples, this chapter considers design at both list and individual book level, discussing branding, cover design, and text design, to show how design presents a book to its readers. Focusing on the existence of clearly defined genres in publishing, it analyses the typical characteristics and design approaches of these genres. Technologies of printing are considered in relation to binding styles and page layout, especially the integration of text and illustrations. The chapter discusses the role of technology in transforming the designer from specifier to implementer of design decisions. It concludes by considering the advantages and disadvantages of ebooks and printed books and outlining the skills required of a book designer for the future.

PurposeThe balance patch is an important but not well studied area to maintain game fairness and improve player entertainment. In this paper, we examine the effect of balance patch on player's character preference and further explore the moderating effect of psychological distance and character selection pattern.Design/methodology/approachIn study 1, a web crawler was used to get server-side data of 40, 974 multi-player online battle arena (MOBA) players through official application programming interfaces (APIs). A paired-T test and a stepwise regression were performed to verify the hypothesis. In study 2, a 2-patch type (buff vs nerf) × 2 psychological distance (near vs distant) × 2 character selection pattern (stable vs variable) between-subjects design was adopted to confirm the empirical conclusions through questionnaire survey design and further explored the mediating effect of patch adjustment perception.FindingsThe analyzed results showed that the buff patch led to an increase in players' character preference, while the nerf patch led to a decrease in players' character preference. Moreover, the main effect was mediated by patch adjustment perception. Furthermore, psychological distance and character selection pattern both moderated the relationship between balance patch and character preference changes. The character preference of the near psychological distance increased more significantly elicited by buff patches and decreased more significantly in an adverse situation. Similarly, players with variable selection pattern of characters were more sensitive to the stimuli, and the character preference of the variable group changed more significantly than that of the stable group caused by balance patch release.Originality/valueThis paper studies the influence of a patch on the balance of character strength on player preference, which expands the research on game balance and fairness. The present results contribute to the theoretical research on consumer behavior of psychological distance and character selection pattern elicited by balance patches. Meanwhile, the results indicate that psychological distance theory can apply to the study of the relationship between players and virtual characters.

For decades Robotica has had a characteristic look and page layout that has served our readership well. However, recent advances in publishing technology make now an excellent time to experiment with some new ideas. From January 2014 we will be using an exciting new cover design concept that will include unique artwork featuring one or more of the topics covered in each issue. Moreover, we will be changing from our traditional double-column format to a new single-column one that will facilitate larger figures, tables and equations. At the end of this month's issue, we will include a sneak peek at the new page format via an article typeset in this new single-column style. We hope that our readership embraces this change. And we look forward to continuing to publish papers of high quality and broad international appeal.
