Rapidly changing business environment has led to the change of supply change management (SCM) implementation. This paper attempts to discuss the benefits of SCM and how the companies manage it in order to maintain their competitive advantage. Illustrations from several companies are included. To achieve sustainable competitive advantage, five basic steps in supply chain management i.e. plan, source, make, deliver and return as discussed earlier should be conducted and evaluated carefully and continuously. SCM should take into consideration the choice of strategic partnerships not only based on the most efficient and effective cost structure but also the legal aspect of the supplier to avoid the company being shut down by the government. Trust and relationships with the suppliers should be maintained and finally, the technology innovation in SCM of a company should be developed more advanced, compared or combined with other companies to sustain competitive advantages.

The firm or the government invites bids against the tender whenever it requires third party to provide services to it like undertaking construction projects, delivery of material, etc. Interested parties gives their bid prices in sealed envelopes and the lowest bid rate wins the contract. However, contractor, in order to win the contract, may not estimate the cost of the project accurately as the estimation of factors contributing to the costs may be based on educated guesswork according to the past experiences. This increases the chances of the final cost of the project to go up in the end, which is to be borne by contractor. Hence, accurate and effective cost estimation is required. This chapter proposed an algorithm to provide a proper way for the contractors to estimate the accurate cost of the project for which they provide bids. This chapter provides an effective solution to the problem of inaccurate cost estimation. The algorithms are automated using a web-based tool.

The education of researchers in Sweden is regulated by a nationwide reform implemented in 1969, which intended to limit doctoral programs to 4 years without diminishing quality. In an audit performed by the government in 1996, however, it was concluded that the reform had failed. Some 80% of the doctoral students admitted had dropped out, and only 1% finished their PhD degree within the stipulated 4 years. In an attempt to determine the causes of this situation, we singled out a social-science department at a major Swedish university and interviewed those doctoral students who had dropped out of the program. This department was found to be representative of the nationwide figures found in the audit. The students interviewed had all completed at least 50% of their PhD studies and had declared themselves as dropouts from this department. We conclude that the entire research education was characterized by a laissez-faire attitude where supervisors were nominated but abdicated. To correct this situation, we suggest that a learning alliance should be established between the supervisor and the student. At the core of the learning alliance is the notion of mutually forming a platform form which work can emerge in common collaboration. The learning alliance implies a contract for work, stating its goals, the tasks to reach these goals, and the interpersonal bonding needed to give force and endurance to the endeavor. Constant scrutiny of this contract and a mutual concern for the learning alliance alone can contribute to its strength.
