Abstract Purpose: PIDs associates with autoimmune diseases include autoimmune liver diseases (AILD); however, the frequency of PIDs among patients with AILD is unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the strength of the association between AILD and PIDs. Methods: We conducted this single-center, cross-sectional, and descriptive study in a tertiary hospital. We evaluated eighty-two patients with AILD (39 autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), 32 with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), seven with variant syndromes (VS), and four with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) for the presence of PIDs. We obtained a detailed history of infections, comorbidities, family history, and laboratory data from the files. All patients were evaluated in the immunology department for further examination, and PID diagnoses were made according to ESID (The European Society for Immunodeficiencies) criteria. Results: Out of 82 patients with AILD, PIDs were diagnosed in 18% (15 patients); there were four patients with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID), four with partial IgA deficiency (PIgAD), four with selective IgM deficiency (SIgMD), and three with combined immunodeficiency (CID). PIDs were present in 29% of patients with VS, 25 % of patients with PSC, 23% of patients with AIH, and 9% of patients with PBC. Conclusion: Although PIDs are rare diseases in the general population, they have a strong association with AILD and were detected in one-fifth of the patients. Further research with larger patient groups is needed to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic impacts of PIDs on AILD.

Background: It is estimated that around 15.6 million abortions take place in India every year. There is significant variance in the estimates for the number of abortions reported and the total number of abortions taking place. Emergency contraception (EC) prevents an accidental pregnancy. It prevents a woman from having to go through the trauma of getting pregnant when she does not want to.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the knowledge of emergency contraception among women attending the gynecological outpatient department. A total of 280 married women were included in the study. Data was collected using a semi-structured questionnaire, which included questions on demographic variables, religion, education, knowledge and practices about EC.Results: Majority of the participants were in the age group of 20-25 years (122; 43.6%). Hinduism was the predominant religion followed by eighty five percent (n=238) of the women. Only 2.1% (n=6) of the women were uneducated while the rest had some form of schooling. Most of them belonged to the age group of 20-25 years (122; 43.6%). Majority of the participants (244; 87.1%) reported that they had never heard about EC. And only 4.3% have ever used EC.Conclusions: Despite EC being available for more than a decade in India, many women still have not heard of it. Although awareness is increasing it is essential to integrate information about EC in family welfare materials and developing new strategies to increase awareness and share information about EC.

Introduction: This study assessed the socio-demographic profile, outcomes of treatment and challenges encountered in the management of children admitted for Severe Acute Malnutrition at the Paediatric Unit of a State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria.  Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted. The records of twenty-five children with SAM admitted from March 2013-March 2018 were reviewed. SAM was defined according to the Wellcome Classification based on child’s weight and oedema status. Data on demographic characteristics, presenting symptoms, co-morbid conditions, duration of admission and outcome were extracted. Results: There were 13 (52.0%) males and 12 (48.0%) females. The median age of children with SAM was eight months. Eighteen children (72%) were marasmic, four (16%) had kwashiorkor while three (12%) had marasmic-kwashiorkor. Common presenting symptoms included poor weight gain (59.1%), fever (54.5%) and diarrhoea (36.4%). Majority (84.0%) of the patients had co-morbid conditions which included sepsis (66.7%), anaemia (37.5%), hypoglycaemia (16.7%) and hypothermia (16.7%). Twenty-one (84.0%) children were fully vaccinated for age, two (8.0%) had partial vaccination while two (8.0%) were never vaccinated. Only two (8.0%) had exclusive breastfeeding, 19 (76.0%) had mixed feeding from birth. Majority (60%) of the children had one or more social challenges such as teenage parents and financial constraints. Mean duration of admission was 4.56 days. Twelve (48.0%) left against medical advice, nine (36.0%) were discharged, one (4.0%) was referred to another tertiary facility and three (12.0%) deaths were recorded. Conclusions: Many of the children admitted for SAM in our study had social problems and almost half of them left the hospital against medical advice. Besides health problem, social factors may play more role in SAM.

The aim of this study to determine the prevalence of microalbuminuria as well as associated factors in non-diabetic hypertensive patients. Hospital-based cross sectional study. Main outcome of measure is microalbuminuria. A total of 100 nondiabetic hypertensive patients age 18 years without a history of pre-existing kidney disease attending the outpatient department of Community Based Medical College Bangladesh, Mymensingh over a period 6 months from June to December 2014 and who consented and met the criteria were enrolled in this study. A questionnaire including clinical and laboratory data was completed for all cases. The survey data were checked, coded and entered into a SPSS statistical package (Version 11.5). All variables were tested for normal distribution of the data. The data were then cleaned and analyzed using Chi-square (x2) Test, One-Way ANOVA statistics and Binary logistic regression model. Results were considered statistically significant for two-sided P values of <0.05. The overall prevalence of microalbuminuria was 17% of patients (11(64.7%) were male and 6(35.3%) female). The mean age and BMI were 49.2±9.1 years and 23.5±3.8 kg/m2 respectively. There were only 2(2%) patients whose systolic BP and diastolic BP were both well controlled (<140/˂90 mmHg), while normalization rates of either systolic BP (<140 mmHg) or diastolic BP (<90 mmHg) were 10% and 26% respectively. Age 50 years, low HDL, duration of HTN and triglyceride >150 mg/dl were found independent predictors of elevated UAE with ORs being 0.18, 3.9, 0.13 and 0.49 respectively. Microalbuminuria was not uncommon in non-diabetic hypertensive patients and older age, low HDL, high LDL, raised triglyceride and duration of HTN were significant predictors of microalbuminuria. There is an urgent need to screening of microalbuminuria should be mainstreamed into routine investigation and follow-up of patients with HBP. CBMJ 2014 July: Vol. 03 No. 02 P: 15-22
