<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> Female pattern hair loss is a problematic condition. The availability of a rapid indicator is crucial. The current study compared female pattern hair loss patients with healthy controls regarding hematological parameters and vitamin D levels.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> We included 78 females with female pattern hair loss and 50 healthy subjects in the control group. We collected a detailed medical history and performed a systematic clinical examination. Blood samples were collected including complete blood count, serum ferritin, and vitamin D.<strong></strong></p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> A significant increase in positive family history and acne among the study than the control group. Most patients had mild disease (55.1%). Female pattern hair loss was significantly associated with a reduction in red blood cell count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean cell volume, mean cell hemoglobin, mean cell hemoglobin concentration, red cell distribution width, serum ferritin and serum vitamin D. Among the patient’s group, the disease severity was positively correlated with disease duration and patient age. The correlation with duration was moderate (r=0.366). The disease duration was positively correlated with body mass index and negatively correlated with red blood cell count, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, red cell indices, ferritin and vitamin D. Disease duration was also inversely correlated with vitamin D levels.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions:</strong> Family history, body mass index, acne, hirsutism and irregular period were high among Saudi women. The disease was moderately severe. FPHL was associated with a significant reduction in hematological parameters and lower serum ferritin that indicated iron deficiency could play a crucial role in the development or progression of the disease. As a preventable etiology, restoring iron stores may provide at least an adjunct therapeutic option.</p>

Background: Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is the most common cause of alopecia in women, characterized by diffuse non-scarring hair loss in frontal, central, and parietal areas of the scalp. Vitamin D is a factor that has recently been considered in dealing with these patients.  Objective: The aim of this work was to evaluate the serum level of 25 hydroxy vitamin D in patients with FPHL to elucidate its possible role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Methods: This study included 45 patients with female pattern hair loss; Evaluation of vitamin D level by Elisa was done for both control and patients. Results: Regarding vitamin D levels, mean ± SD. 18.0 ± 11.97. Conclusion: This study indicated the correlation between FPHL and decreased serum levels of Vitamin D3. It is recommended to evaluate serum Vitamin D3 levels as well as other hormone assays in these patients.

Introduction: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystemic, autoimmune connective tissue disease characterized by a variable course and prognosis. We aimed to determine IL-10, IL-17 and IL-23 cytokines and vitamin D levels in SLE patients, which we think play role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Material and Method: Forty SLE patients and 20 healthy controls were included in our study. Levels of IL-10, IL-17 and IL-23 were measured by sandwich ELISA method. Quantitative data are expressed as mean ± standard deviation and median range (maximum-minimum) values. The data were analyzed at 95% confidence interval, and cases where the p value was less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: IL-10 and IL-17 levels of the control and patient groups were compared and no statistically significant difference was found (p=0.333, p=0.99). IL-23 levels of the patient group were found to be higher than the control group and were found to be statistically significant (p<0.001). No statistically significant relationship was found between disease duration or SLEDAI score and IL-23 levels (p=0.476). 25 (OH) vitamin D levels of the patient group were found to be lower than the control group and were statistically significant (p=0.003). No significant relationship was found between IL-10 and IL-17 levels and vitamin D. Significant relationship was found between IL-23 and vitamin D levels (p=0.019). Discussion: In our study, there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of IL-10 or IL-17, while IL-23 levels were found to be significantly higher in SLE patients. Vitamin D levels were found to be lower in the patient group with SLE compared to the control group, and a negative correlation was found between the disease duration and IL-23. Specific blocking of the IL-23 immune pathway can be an effective and safe treatment option in the treatment of SLE.

Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the association between Vitamin D level and psoriasis, in particular in our city of the long, hot, and sunny weather, in an attempt to add a clarification to this controversial subject. Methods: A case–control study included 120 patients with psoriasis and 38 patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA); 89 (56.3%) patients were male. Psoriasis area and severity index (PASI) was calculated for all patients with psoriasis and disease activity score using 28 joints (DAS28) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (DAS28) was measured for all patients with PsA. The control group comprised 164 age- and sex-matched participants (91 males and 73 females). Vitamin D serum level was performed for both patients and controls. Results: Vitamin D levels in both patients and controls were 17.4±7.7 and 28.3±5.6, respectively. The level of Vitamin D was lower in a patient with disease duration equal and more than 10 years than those with a disease duration <10 years. There is no significant difference in Vitamin D levels between the two patient subgroups. Lower Vitamin D levels were associated with high PASI and high DAS28 in psoriasis and PsA, respectively. Conclusion: Patients with psoriasis and PsA associated with low levels of serum Vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency was found to be associated with long disease duration in both psoriasis and PsA. Patients with active disease have lower Vitamin D levels.

<p class="abstract"><strong>Background: </strong>Diffuse hair loss is a common complaint encountered by dermatologists in clinical practice and can be alarming to the patients. Chronic telogen effluvium (CTE) is characterized by an abrupt onset of diffuse loss of scalp hair persisting for more than six months, predominantly affecting healthy women in their fourth to fifth decade of life. Although CTE is considered to be associated with various nutritional deficiencies, currently the evidence to substantiate this assertion is conflicting.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods: </strong>A cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 adult non-pregnant women with CTE to document serum ferritin, B12 and vitamin D levels in an attempt to validate their role as biochemical markers using Statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 25:0 and Fisher’s exact test.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> Mean ferritin level was 31.17 ng/dL. 23% patients had serum ferritin levels lower than the normal range (13-150 ng/dL). Vitamin D levels (normal range 5.2-60.4 ng/ml, mean 21.41 ng/ml) were low (deficiency range) in 2%. Vitamin B12 levels (normal range 191-663 pg/ml, mean 239.79) were low in 35.7% patients. Other parameters like duration, family history, past history of treatment did not demonstrate any statistically significant correlation.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Our study detected low levels of serum ferritin and vitamin B12 in approximately one-fourth and a third of females with chronic telogen effluvium respectively with vitamin D deficiency found in only a small proportion. Although a statistically significant correlation could not be established between these nutrients and participant age or other parameters; we concur with most authors who recommend that all females with diffuse hair loss deserve a thorough screening for nutritional deficiencies to facilitate prompt recognition and timely supplementation.</p>

The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in patients with acute coronary syndrome in comparison with normal individuals and study the correlation between these two conditions. We measured the plasma 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25-OH-D) levels in 60 patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) of both gender and in 30 age matched control individuals of both gender without any known cardiovascular or systemic diseases. The levels of 25-OH-D were measured by ELISA method and the results were statically analyzed to find out any possible correlation. We classified the cases according to their plasma 25(OH)D levels. 25(OH)D levels of ≥ 30 ng/ml were considered normal, levels < 30 and > 20 ng/ml were classified as insufficient, while levels of ≤ 20 ng/ml were classified as deficient. In the current study the prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in the patients group was much higher than it was in the control group. Vitamin D deficiency was observed in 80% and insufficiency in 13% of total patients of ACS, there by bringing the total count to 93%. Whereas only 7% of the patients had adequate vitamin D levels. Thus, these results indicate the existence of a significant correlation between the vitamin D deficiency and ACS in comparison to healthy controls

Due to its immunomodulatory effect, vitamin D has been associated with clinical parameters and outcomes in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) which are chronic conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. Upon synthesis or digestion, vitamin D is metabolized in the liver to form 25(OH)D3, the major circulating metabolite. Further renal hydroxylation generates 1,25(OH)2D3, the most potent metabolite. Our aim was to examine the association between vitamin D levels, and its supplementation and pain intensity in 39 IBD patients and 33 healthy individuals. 25(OH)D3 and 1,25(OH)2D3 serum levels were measured. Each subject filled out visual analog scale (VAS) and Laitinen’s pain assessment scales. Laboratory results were obtained, and disease activity was assessed. Linear regression was employed to investigate the correlation between 25(OH)D3, 1,25(OH)2D3 and pain intensity, clinical activity parameters, C-reactive protein, disease duration, and dietary habits. In IBD patients, 25(OH)D3 was increased, whereas 1,25(OH)2D3 was not. Vitamin D3 supplementation did not influence their levels. No correlation was found between pain scores, disease activity, inflammatory status, disease duration or dietary habits and both forms of vitamin D. Elevated 25(OH)D3 and normal 1,25(OH)D3 were found in IBD patients as compared to the controls. We discovered no effect from supplementation and no association between pain severity and vitamin D.

Psoriasis is an immuno-mediated chronic systemic disease involving cytokines of helper Th1 pathway. Vitamin D has an effect on keratinocyte proliferation, differentiation and immune modulation of immune system especially Th1 pathway, which is altered in psoriatic skin suggesting that Vitamin D may have a role in pathogenesis of psoriasis. To study correlation between psoriasis vulgaris and serum vitamin D. To evaluate serum vitamin D level in psoriasis cases and in control group and correlating vitamin D level with severity and duration of the psoriasis. 57 cases (&#62;15years of age) with psoriasis and 57 healthy subjects were recruited. Psoriasis was clinically diagnosed and severity evaluated by PASI scale. Vitamin D was analysed by enhanced chemilumine scence on vitrus Eci autoanalyzer of Orth clinical diagnostic. Vitamin D deficiency defined as &#60;20ng/ml, insufficiency 20-30ng/ml and sufficient 30-100ng/ml. Vitamin D deficiency in the study was 22.8% in patients and 14% in control group. Vitamin D insufficiency was found in 42.1% of cases and 19.3% of control. According to chi-square the p-value is 0.003 showing significant association. There was a tendency towards decrease in vitamin D level with increase in disease duration. There was negative correlation between vitamin D and PASI score. The study found a significant relationship between vitamin D and psoriasis. Further metanalysis involving larger study population will be required to establish whether vitamin D levels benefits patient with psoriasis vulgaris.

Vitamin D deficiency actives renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) which affects cardiovascular system. Activation of RAAS is associated with pulmonary hypertension (PHT). Relation between vitamin D deficiency and PHT could be therefore suggested. In  our study we compared pulmonary artery pressure between vitamin D deficiency and control groups. 115 consecutive patients (average age: 61.86 ± 5.86) who have detected very low vitamin D (vitamin D levels < 10 ng/ml) were enrolled. 117 age matched persons (average age: 61.74 ± 5.99) were selected as the control group. All groups underwent transthoracic echocardiography. Routine biochemical measurement of 25-OH vitamin D and parathormon (PTH) levels were performed. Baseline characteristics of the study groups were comparable. Systolic pulmonary artery pressure (SPAP) of patients in  the low vitamin D group was higher than the control groups. As a  result our study, a  relation between vitamin D deficiency and pulmonary artery hypertension was revealed.

Background: Transient tachypnea of newborn (TTN) is a common cause of respiratory distress in newborns with estimated incidence of 1-2% of all newborns. Although a self-limiting transient condition but it may cause severe morbidities. This study was conducted to find association of serum vitamin D levels in neonates who develop TTN as compared to normal healthy neonates.Methods: With thorough history with structured questionnaire and lab tests, serum vitamin D levels of 45 neonates who develop TTN were compared with 56 healthy neonates in control group.Results: Out of 45 neonates who develop TTN 39(86.7%) were deficient in vitamin D as compared to control group where 33(58.9%) out of 56 healthy neonates were deficient in vitamin D.Conclusions: Lower vitamin D levels at birth in term neonates is associated with increased risk of developing TTN and vitamin D may have a role in its pathogenesis.
