Closing rural schools is a scene that has become usual in many Brazilian states, a fact that forces rural communities to quit life in the country as the place for both living and existence reproduction. Rural schools in Northwestern Rio de Janeiro State take the same path of other Brazilian realities; in other words, they are the victims of activity canceling, which is an injustice supported by economic arguments. However, the implementation of the course named Interdisciplinary Major Degree in Rural Education, also known as LEdoC, at Fluminense Federal University (UFF), in Santo Antônio de Pádua City, RJ, opened room for a whole series of popular movements to cope with the rural exodus reality. Accordingly, the aim of the present study is to describe the path opened between 2015 and 2019 by UFF’s LEdoC and Santo Antônio de Pádua’s community for the Alternation Pedagogy in order to defend rural schools, based on the research-action methodology. The main results have highlighted the importance of the research-action methodology to reinforce the local demands and the process of reporting the alienation of rural populations from their right to education. Moreover, they have pointed towards the fact that popular social movements reinforce rural teachers’ formation by repairing public policies to question oppression situations in and outside education institutions.

Preparing pre-service teachers for rural schools has been a challenge in the field of education for more than a century, and issues specific to the rural teacher workforce remain a persistent and salient challenge in the United States and globally. This task is complex and multifaceted, conflated with a wide range of contextual variations in salaries, community amenities, geographic or professional distances, technology access, health disparities, and poverty rates. Additionally, institutions of higher education have wavered in their interest in and commitment to rural teacher education, though there is a growing awareness of the need to attend to the experiences of students in rural communities and the educators who teach them. The literature and research on rural teacher preparation has typically been organized around the three challenges of preparation (post-secondary education), recruitment (youth aspirations to teach, would-be career changers interested in teaching, and division-level efforts to staff schools with effective teachers), and retention (providing pre-service and new teachers with learning experiences and support that increase the likelihood of remaining in the profession in rural schools). Literature on rural teacher preparation and evidence related to “preparation, recruitment, and retention” can be repositioned to offer new insights focused on solutions. Three focus areas—Curriculum, Context, and Conveyance—serve to answer the question: What makes a teacher preparation program rural? Curriculum serves as a core component for preparing rural teachers. A rural curriculum for a teacher education program includes introducing students to content and experiences, including field experiences, that have been designed to support their professional and personal success in rural schools and communities. Context is understanding the strengths and assets of the rural places, communities, and cultures in which pre-service teachers are preparing to live, learn, and teach. Context allows us to consider the unique environments in which rural teachers live and work. Conveyance is the means by which potential teachers have access to teacher preparation programs, that is, how programs are delivered and structured to provide access to potential teachers in rural communities (online, in person, alternative and traditional programs, etc.). A focus on Curriculum, Context, and Conveyance allows school leaders and education researchers to resist deficit ideologies and to consider how rural communities are asset-rich environments, ultimately increasing resources that prepare teachers for, and build from the strengths of, rural communities.

Objetivo: identificar as características clínicas e sociodemográficas das pacientes portadoras de cardiomiopatia periparto em unidade cardiointensiva de um hospital universitário no Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Método: estudo quantitativo, transversal, de análise documental em cinco prontuários, entre janeiro de 2014 a dezembro de 2016, obedecendo aos critérios preestabelecidos de inclusão e exclusão e iniciado após aprovação do Comitê de Ética e Pesquisa. Os dados foram coletados mediante um formulário próprio, tabulados em planilhas eletrônicas e analisados através de estatística descritiva simples. Resultados: houve predominância de idade entre 26-35 anos – 4 (80%), multíparas, etnia parda, internação para pós-operatório de parto cesárea – 4 (80%), internação inferior a 2 semanas 4 (80%). Dentre os problemas de enfermagem encontrados, estão o débito cardíaco diminuído e padrão respiratório ineficaz. Conclusão: divulgar as características sociodemográficas e clínicas dessa clientela pode ajudar a delimitar alguns problemas de enfermagem representativos nessa população.ABSTRACTObjective: to identify the clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of patients with peripartum cardiomyopathy in a cardiac intensive care unit of a university hospital in Rio de Janeiro State. Method: this quantitative, cross-sectional, documentary analysis studied five medical records, between January 2014 and December 2016, according to pre-established inclusion and exclusion criteria, after approval by the research ethics committee. Data were collected using a specific form, tabulated in electronic spreadsheets, and analyzed by simple descriptive statistics. Results: subjects were aged predominantly 26-35 years (4; 80%), multiparous, skin color brown, admitted for caesarean section postoperative care (4; 80%), and for less than 2 weeks (4; 80%). The nursing problems encountered included decreased cardiac output and ineffective respiratory pattern. This paper aims to show and to discuss some results of a large-time resarch upon the ergonomics problems of fishing in Cabo Frio, 200 km north far from Rio de Janeiro city. By working in a combined Ergonomic Action, Research-Action and Design Methodology perspective, we've looked for establishing the requisites and restraints concerning fishing boat projects, focusing the aspect of habitableness in a sea ambience, because the fishing boat is the workplace in this environment, and that makes it different from boats related to charge or people sea transport.

We studied and compared parameters of the snake community of the Serra do Mendanha, Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil (22º 48'-22º 51' S and 43º 31'-43º 28' W), such as: abundance distribution, richness, species diversity and biomass, between forested areas, areas under regeneration and agriculture areas (banana plantations); to obtain information about the natural history and facilitate the development of future research. For capturing the snakes we used: pitfall traps, drift-fences and visual search (diurnal and nocturnal) along four transects for each habitat. The captured snakes were measured with a tape and caliper, weighed with dynamometers and sexed with the use of a catheter. The animals marked (with ventral scales cut) were released for posterior recapture. One individual per species was fixed and deposited at the Museu Nacional, Rio de Janeiro. We undertook an effort of 840 man/hour, and captured a total of 207 snakes belonging to 25 species (Colubridae 80.2%, Elapidae 12.6%, Viperidae 6.3% and Boidae 0.9%). The most abundant were: Liophis miliaris (n = 33), Micrurus corallinus and Chironius fuscus (both with n = 26); the least abundant: Elapomorphus quinquelineatus, Siphlophis compressus and Tropidodryas serra (all with n = 1). The species that contributed the greatest biomass were Spilotes pullatus (7,925 g), Chironius laevicollis (4,694 g), Liophis miliaris (3,675 g) and Pseustes sulphureus (3,050 g); those that contributed the lowest biomass were: Siphlophis compressus, Tropidodryas serra (both with 4 g) and Elapomorphus quinquelineatus (3 g). We found significant differences between the sampled habitats at the Serra do Mendanha (undisturbed forest, secondary forest and banana plantations). The results showed that a great reduction in the abundance, richness, diversity and biomass of the snakes occurs when the native forest is replaced by banana plantations.
