Background: Interprofessional Education (IPE), provides an integrative and rewarding learning platform for different healthcare professions to engage with each other in a cooperative basis to ultimately improve healthcare services for patients. Throughout the years, IPE has established itself as an indispensible tool in cultivating the necessary skills, mindset, and understanding to enhance interprofessional collaboration among healthcare providers. That being said, as with many other educational approaches, the success of IPE hinges on the readiness of healthcare professions students to learn and apply the concept; and yet, despite having been readily explored in numerous Western institutions, such readiness among healthcare students in Asian universities remains largely unknown. Methods: We measured attitudes related to interprofessional education  & collaboration using a questionnaire called Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS). A total of 158 students from three faculties of health sciences at Asia Metropolitan University participated in this study.  Cumulative result, as well as results from individual faculties were analyzed using Descriptive and non-parametric statistics. Results: Medical students overall, reported a higher rating for the perceived benefits of working together to solve patient problems compared to other students from other health sciences faculties. They are more receptive to working with other students from different healthcare professions in small-team projects and also seem to value the importance of mutual learning when dealing with patients’ problems. On the other hand, nursing students were more uncertain of how they will fit into a cross-disciplinary team in a professional capacity and felt the need to acquire much more knowledge and skills when compared to students from other health sciences faculties. The total RIPLS score among all three faculties of health sciences at Asia Metropolitan University was in the high range. Conclusion: Students from three faculties of health sciences offered at Asia Metropolitan University namely Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Healthcare Management, and Faculty of Nursing, were deemed IPE ready. Recommendations: The university needs to consider how to integrate IPE into the curricula, define learning outcomes and/ or competencies, develop and utilize the 4-dimensional curriculum development blueprint in line with health professional accreditation standards to promote collaboration and competence among all students ,whereby upon graduation, they as healthcare professionals, will in turn, optimize health services, strengthen health systems, and improve health outcomes. Objective To examine the practical effect of inter-professional education and situational simulation teaching implemented in surgical nursing practice teaching. Methods On the whole, 100 undergraduate nursing students in the operating room of the hospital of the authors from May 2019 to August 2020 were selected. These students fell to two groups with the random number table method. The control received the regular teaching, and the research group were given the interprofessional education and context. The Simulation teaching was conducted to compare the theoretical knowledge, skill level, various abilities of the two groups of students, as well as the satisfaction of the operating room doctors to the nursing cooperation of the interns. Results The research group achieved higher theoretical knowledge and a higher skill level than the control (p < 0.05); the various abilities of the research group were higher than those of the control (p < 0.05); the operating room doctors of the research group were more satisfied with the nursing cooperation of interns, as compared with those of the control (p < 0.05). Conclusion In the surgical nursing practice teaching, the inter-professional education and the situational simulation teaching have significant effects and are worth clinical applications.

<p>An alarming number of errors occur in the healthcare system. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) responded to the error rate by encouraging changes in professional education and recommending interdisciplinary team training. A variety of professions, including aviation and the military, have utilized simulation in their education and training for mastering skills and also to assist with respect and appreciation of other professional roles on the healthcare team. The purpose of this study was to examine undergraduate nursing students, graduate social work students, and APRN students’ perceptions of one another as healthcare professionals using interdisciplinary simulation. The research study was a quantitative descriptive study using a pre-test, intervention, post-test design with a nonprobability, convenience sample. The participants were asked to complete the IEPS questionnaire, an eighteen-question survey with a 6-point Likert scale that measures the effect of interprofessional education experiences on students. The participants then took part in four interprofessional simulations scenarios with debriefing sessions following each scenario. The same IEPS was completed at the end of the day. 109 participants from the mentioned disciplines participated in the study. Statistically significant higher scores were found on the posttest questionnaires in 17 of the 18 questions. The study supports the use of interprofessional simulation in higher education and also provides a proven benefit related to perceptions of other disciplines.</p>

Background: Using simulation as an educational method to learn collaborative practice requires the involvement of various professional education programs where the intention is to learn from, with, and about each other.Methods: This study describes pharmacy and nursing students´ experiences with interprofessional education. After interprofessional simulation, three focus group interviews with bachelor students were conducted. The data were analysed using Giorgi’s qualitative content analysis method.Findings: The students found that IPE closed knowledge gaps, change a stereotypical perception of professional roles, and enhance patient safety. Full-scale simulation appears to be an effective arena for learning clinical judgement, improving communication skills, and developing knowledge of pharmacodynamics.Conclusion: Interprofessional education may be necessary for professionals to enhance their ability to interact more effectively in the future.

Today’s COVID-19 situation can affect university Health Sciences students’ psychological health. This study aimed to analyze the stress caused by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Health Sciences students from the University of Zaragoza (Spain) almost 1 year after the pandemic began. This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with a sample of 252 university students who completed a self-administered online questionnaire. It evaluated the impact of perceived stress with a modified scale (PSS-10-C), and assessed anxiety and depression on the Goldberg scale. Students presented stress (13.1%), anxiety (71.4%) and depression (81%). Females (81.7%) and the third-year Occupational Therapy students (p = 0.010) reported perceived stress. Nursing students perceived less stress (OR: 0.148; 95% CI: 0.026 to 0.842). University students developed stress and anxiety due to COVID-19 almost 1 year after the pandemic began. Psychological support measures for these groups should be prioritized.

COVID-19 has caused a shortage of healthcare workers and has strained healthcare systems globally. Pre-registered healthcare students with training have a duty of care and can support the healthcare workforce. This study explored factors influencing the willingness of final-year nursing students to volunteer during the COVID-19 pandemic, the role of professional identity in volunteering as healthcare workers, and strategies to improve future volunteering uptakes and processes. A qualitative study using focus-group discussions was conducted. Final-year nursing students who volunteered, students who did not volunteer, and lecturers who supervised student volunteers were recruited. Interviews were conducted online, video-recorded, and transcribed verbatim. A thematic analysis was used. The themes were “wavering thoughts on volunteering”, “bringing out ‘the nurse’ in students through volunteering” and “gearing up to volunteer”. Findings suggested the need to look beyond the simplicity of altruism to the role of professional identity, operational, and motivational factors to explain nursing students’ decision to volunteer and their volunteer behavior. Providing accommodation, monetary and academic-related incentives, supporting the transitionary phase from students to “professional volunteers”, promoting cohesive and positive staff–student volunteer relationships, and establishing a volunteer management team are strategies identified to improve volunteering uptake and operational processes. Our findings advocate strategic partnerships between hospitals/communities and academic institutions in providing various healthcare services during pandemics.

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted daily activities worldwide. University students may have experienced substantial changes in daily living as a result of restrictions on university attendance. The return to normalcy may take a long time, and understanding the influence that shifts in daily routines have had on the lifestyles of university students may inform approaches to support overall well-being. We analyzed changes in the lifestyles of students enrolled at a health sciences university during the COVID-19 pandemic. This longitudinal study took place at the Faculty of Medicine and Nursing in the University of the Basque Country in Spain, and the final sample consisted of 113 nursing students, 109 medical students, and 45 physiotherapy students. Our results demonstrate changes in lifestyles of university students during the pandemic. MedDiet adherence scores and the percentage of students with high adherence increased during the pandemic. This increase was due to the increased consumption of vegetables and nuts. In terms of physical activity, the practice of moderate and intense physical activity was maintained. These results provide important information for both public health authorities and educational institutions to guide strategies to maintain the well-being of students and enhance opportunities for young adults to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Abstract Background High-quality patient care is a complex phenomenon that requires collaboration among healthcare professionals. Research has shown that Interprofessional Education (IPE) carries promise to improve collaborative work and patient care. So far, collaboration among various health professionals remains a challenge. Very few focus group discussions to determine the medical students’ readiness and positive attitudes towards IPE have been reported from the Arabian context. Methods A two-staged sequential mixed methods study was conducted among medical, dental, pharmacy, and health sciences students of the University of Sharjah United Arab Emirates. The perspectives of students toward IPE and collaborative practice were first gathered by administering a validated instrument, Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS). This was followed by focused group discussions. A quantitative as well as a qualitative data analysis was performed. Results This study cohort included 282 students. All respondents showed readiness to adopt IPE as all statements of the RIPLS inventory scored high median scores. All participants showed positive attitudes and readiness towards IPE. Three main domains of themes were generated from focus group discussions; prior knowledge, need for IPE framework and its implementation. Information workload, lack of clarity and less focused teaching pedagogies of IPE were considered as perceived barriers. Conclusion This study demonstrated a substantial agreement of medical and health sciences students towards readiness and perceived effectiveness of IPE. Educators are urged to embed new IPE programs into existing curricular frameworks, which can potentially enhance collaborative learning and improve quality of patient care.

Background: The practice of inter-professional education (IPE) is expanding rapidly especially in the developing countries.  The goal of IPE is to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes that result in effective Inter-professional (IP) team behaviors and competency. Therefore, it is essential to understand more about the activity, other professional’s involvement and its implications for nursing students and institutions.Purpose: This paper aimed to review the process and other professional’s involvement in IPE’s nursing education, and describe the implication after implementing IPE for nursing students and institution.Methods: A comprehensive multi-step search of the literature in IPE using ProQuest, EBSCO and Cengage databases was performed. Samples of 19 studies met the inclusion criteria and were used in this study.Results: None of the studies reported findings from developing country, while there were only two studies conducted in Asia. IPE programs utilize a variety of combinations of interactive learning methods, such as group problem solving, focus group interview, social networking (website), and simulated patient or simulated based training (SBT) which is becoming the most common methods employed.  IPE gives benefits for the students, such as improving communication skills, recognizing the role and responsibilities, understanding the value and ethics and also increasing teamwork and team-based care.Conclusion: Despite the limitations, this systematic review found a number of activities and other professionals that can be involved with nursing in the IPE implementation.  It also found out that IPE applied in a variety of clinical settings is well received by the students and enable them to learn the knowledge and skills for collaborative learning.
