International trade provides a channel with which the interaction, integration and partnership of countries can be attained and/or established. Despite the relevance of trade to national, regional and global economies, the documentation of these economic activities is sometimes inadequate such that it brings to question the validity of the generated data. Empirical scholars often find it difficult to analyze trade statistics with zero-trade values, especially in terms of finding natural logarithm. Researchers often deal with the zero trade statistics by employing the truncation method or censoring method. However, this has consequences for empirical analysis and policy formulation because there is information in the zero-value trade that will be lost if they are truncated from the dataset. Hence, the main challenge in the literature is the issue of the most appropriate and efficient empirical strategy for solving the problem of zero-trade values among available options. This has led to controversy in the literature with several proofs and reproofs, actions and reaction as well as counter-reaction. It is on this basis that this paper is situated to review the raging controversy on the solution to the consideration of zero values in trade statistics as applicable to positive trade analysis and/or modelling.

In his article ‘death of distance’, Caincross (1997) challenged the orthodoxy with regard to the role and direction of proximity in international trade. The mainstream model for trade analysis, the gravity model has only two prominent determinants – one of which is distance. But while this theory predicts a negative impact of distance on trade, empirical evidence seems to be evenly split between those finding a positive and those finding a negative impact of distance on trade. South Africa’s total exports to three groups of countries at different distances are measured to determine the impact of distance. The results indicate that distance shows a negative sign when African countries are concerned but turns positive when European countries, even more distant, enter the equation.

The article presents the possibility of using a country's bilateral trade analysis as the informational basis for identifying priority areas and industries in manufacturing from which outward direct investment (ODI) could be promoted to the host countries that are trading partners within the integration area. There has been elaborated a methodology for determining priority industries and types of ODI strategies. It includes eight stages of a dynamic assessment of the country's international specialization change in bilateral trade. The methodology comprises the evaluation of the following indicators: comparative advantages in international trade between the country and partners in order to determine the priority sectors for ODI identify the types of ODI strategies; the nature of intra-industry trade of the country and partner countries to determine the possibilities for global and regional value chains creation. The methodology has been applied to the case of theRepublicofBelarus. There have been evaluated the dynamic changes in its international specialization in bilateral trade with the EAEU partner countries on the basis of the 4-digit UN Standard International Trade Classification code. Static and dynamic effects of integration were identified, on the basis of which the types of potential ODI strategies fromBelarusto the EAEU partner countries were revealed.
