Lecturers and student teachers with hearing impairments’ own perceptions on academic performance: a case study of Kitwe College of Education - Zambia

The level of education attained by students is dependent on their ability to understand learnt concepts and demonstrate their acquired knowledge and skills in problem solving as well as their performance academically. This study sought to investigate the perceptions of lecturers on academic performance of student teachers with hearing impairments. A descriptive case study was used as research design. The study sample included three (3) Lecturers and four (4) student teachers with hearing impairments making the total of seven (7) participants who were purposively sampled. Data was generated using interviews and analysed qualitatively using thematic analysis techniques based on emerging themes from the study. The study revealed that lecturers perceived student teachers with hearing impairments as average and below-average performers academically. The study further revealed that student teachers with hearing impairments had mixed feelings towards their academic performance and perceived their academic performance as being influenced by their inability to understand concepts as well as lecturers’ inability to handle them appropriately. The study recommended the need by educators of students with hearing impairments to have positive perception towards students in order to instill self-positive regard in students. The study further recommended need for lecturers to adapt tests and examinations items in order to accommodate deaf student teachers.

Writing, one of the four skills which have to be taught by educators in language learning. Starting from classroom observation implied that students confronted the difficulties in writing involving generating ideas, organizing words, and making compositions. This study supposes to explore some effects of pop culture as authentic materials for English language teaching in improving students’ writing skill. Due to pop culture relates to students’ life and experience, it is considered to be a stimulus for gaining students’ ideas, information, motivation, and interest in teaching writing. The students of secondary school were involved in this study and descriptive case study was employed to observe the importance of pop culture in writing class. Also, questionnaires and students’ works are the instruments to measure its effects. Both students’ works and result of the questionnaires pointed out that significantly improvement obtained after applying pop culture. In line with findings, it can be said that pop cultures have significant effects toward students’ writing skill. So, educators need to apply pop culture as their choices in future planning lesson.

The increase in the number of institutions offering degrees in interdis ciplinary computing raises a set of questions at the epistemological level. A set of questions is raised: is any integration of computing with some other field a representation of interdisciplinarity? What are the limits of enabling? What are the requirements of integration? Does the product of interdisciplinary computing remain computer science? These questions are urgent and answers should be provided especially that the number of such degrees is increasing accompanied by a growing demand on these jobs, as reflected on jobs and opportunities websites. A definition for interdisciplinary computing is needed. This paper attempts to answer these questions based on the huge literature available on interdisciplinarity in general, and interdisciplinary computing in specific. Special reference to career opportunities will be made. The study will be completed using document analysis examining the related documents as the data source of a qualitative research. A phenomenological study will be used to understand the meaning different schools are appropriating to interdisciplinarity. Enough documents will be consulted to extract the common themes and build a sufficient data set of emerging themes to validate the findings. While the phenomenological study aims at describing the essence interdisciplinary computing, grounded theory methods will be used to formulate a definition. As a result of this study is expected to better inform on the design and understanding of how different schools are managing their offering.Some explanatory, exploratory, or descriptive case study involving multiple types of data sources will be explored to acquire a deep understanding and provide support of the findings. The paper concludes with a proposed set of PLOs for interdisciplinary computing and reflecting its educational aspects and respecting technical norms.

The study sought to explore the impact of counseling service on students’ academic performance in E.P. College of Education, Bimbilla. The objectives of the study were: one, to examine the impact of the counselling service on student-teachers’ academic performance; two, to find out what motivates student-teachers to patronize the counseling service; and lastly, to find out the perception student-teachers have about the role of the counseling service in E.P. College of Education, Bimbilla. The study employed the qualitative approach with case study in focus. Two hundred and fifty (250) student-teachers, four (4) tutor-counselors and a vice principal were selected using the stratified sampling technique. The respondents were made to fill questionnaires and also interviewed. After successful data collection, the data was analyzed using SPSS version 17. The data was also analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions and percentages. Qualitative descriptions were also used in the presentation of data. The study found out that counselling service equips student-teachers with good study and time management skills to improve their academic performance. The study concluded that counseling service could help student-teachers build positive self-image which could lead to better academic performance. One of the implications of the findings is that if student-teachers seek counseling, they would be assisted to develop good study skills.


The study is a case study of the student academic performance in vocational and technical education at the College of Education, Ikere Ekiti. The academic performance of students has been abysmally low. This has grossly impacted the students’ enrolment in the departments and the College in general. The paper identifies the major causes of the failures in vocational and technical education courses in the College. The survey research employing exploratory sequential mixed method was used. It involves 12 Participants and 50 respondents. The Nvivo12 software was used to obtain the word cloud. The Rasch Analysis Model was applied to obtain the Person and Item separations, reliabilities and the respondent’s agreement. The hierarchy details the factors in order relativity and difficulty level. Findings shows that both internal and external factors are the main sources of students’ failure.

The current study proposes web applications-based learning environment to promote teaching and learning activities in the classrooms. It also helps teachers facilitate learners’ contributions in the process of learning and improving their motivation and performance. The case study illustrated that female students were more interested in learning and performed better when using the proposed applications, in the classroom, during and after classes. In addition, these applications allow them obtain an appropriate educational support. It also provides teachers and learners with an effective support in managing and guiding the educational activities inside and outside the classroom.

The purpose of the study was to find out the problems related to the teaching of English pronunciation in the pre-service training institutions. Wesley College of Education, Kumasi, Ghana, was used as a case study. Out of the problems, deductions were made to make recommendations. Three tutors of English and twenty students were purposively sampled for the study. Through the use of interviews, three key findings, realized from the research include the following: First, the mode of correcting students’ mispronunciation. The manner in which some tutors correct students’ mispronunciation was found to be very discouraging to the students; second, the less attention given to English ‘pronunciation’ as one of the aspects of English language teaching/learning was a concern; In any case, though pronunciation was not conspicuously part of the English course outline, it did not imply that there was no form of pronunciation teaching. Thus, during the teaching learning process pronunciation teaching go on directly or indirectly. In terms, of other subject areas other than English language, pronunciation teaching hardly happens. More importantly, another vital problem found was the poor foundation at the basic level of education. The student teachers should in-turn have a better grounding in English pronunciation to teach the pupils in the basic schools in Ghana. Unfortunately, the ill tradition of unintelligible pronunciation goes on, which the researcher terms it the ‘dark cycle’. The views of students and tutors were gathered through recording and transcription of interviews. The research generally reveals the need for language teachers and curriculum planners to factor in pronunciation as a vital aspect of building up students; especially, student- teachers who will complete soon and go and teach younger ones, ensuring the avoidance of ‘dark cycle’ as the researcher’s term, explained in the ‘key words’.

Abstract The intent of this work is to demonstrate the importance of charged device model (CDM) ESD testing and characterization by presenting a case study of a situation in which CDM testing proved invaluable in establishing the reliability of a GaAs radio frequency integrated circuit (RFIC). The problem originated when a sample of passing devices was retested to the final production test. Nine of the 200 sampled devices failed the retest, thus placing the reliability of all of the devices in question. The subsequent failure analysis indicated that the devices failed due to a short on one of two capacitors, bringing into question the reliability of the dielectric. Previous ESD characterization of the part had shown that a certain resistor was likely to fail at thresholds well below the level at which any capacitors were damaged. This paper will discuss the failure analysis techniques which were used and the testing performed to verify the failures were actually due to ESD, and not caused by weak capacitors.

Abstract IR-OBIRCH (Infrared Ray – Optical Beam Induced Resistance Change) is one of the main failure analysis techniques [1] [2] [3] [4]. It is a useful tool to do fault localization on leakage failure cases such as poor Via or contact connection, FEoL or BEoL pattern bridge, and etc. But the real failure sites associated with the above failure mechanisms are not always found at the OBIRCH spot locations. Sometimes the real failure site is far away from the OBIRCH spot and it will result in inconclusive PFA Analysis. Finding the real failure site is what matters the most for fault localization detection. In this paper, we will introduce one case using deep sub-micron process generation which suffers serious high Isb current at wafer donut region. In this case study a BEoL Via poor connection is found far away from the OBIRCH spots. This implies that layout tracing skill and relation investigation among OBIRCH spots are needed for successful failure analysis.
