Understanding and Modeling Gas Breakthrough in the Karachaganak Gas Condensate Field

Abstract Field production constrained with surface facilities on gas handling have to deal with well rates optimization by reducing gas oil ratio of the field production. This means the best way of reducing gas oil ratio on field level is not by closing wells with the highest gas oil ratio but chocking back wells where gas breakthrough occurred and GOR of a well is rate dependent [1]. In this paper, authors modeled and analyzed wells with gas breakthrough in single porosity and dual porosity sector models. The analysis showed single porosity models underestimate severity of gas breakthrough and fail to predict rate dependent GOR of a well in the field. Also, based on the sector model using machine-learning technique an empirical equation was developed to estimate rate dependent GOR of a well which can be further used in field level production optimization exercise to reach maximum liquid production under gas processing constraints.

Unlocking oil from tight reservoirs remains a challenging task, as the existence of fractures and oil-wet rock surfaces tends to make the recovery uneconomic. Injecting a gas in the form of a foam is considered a feasible technique in such reservoirs for providing conformance control and reducing gas-oil interfacial tension (IFT) that allows the injected fluids to enter the rock matrix. This paper presents a modeling strategy that aims to understand the behavior of near-miscible foam injection and to find the optimal strategy to oil recovery depending on the reservoir pressure and gas availability. Corefloods with foam injection following gas injection into a fractured rock were simulated and history matched using a compositional commercial simulator. The simulation results agreed with the experimental data with respect to both oil recovery and pressure gradient during both injection schedules. Additional simulations were carried out by increasing the foam strength and changing the injected gas composition. It was found that increasing foam strength or the proportion of ethane could boost oil production rate significantly. When injected gas gets miscible or near miscible, the foam model would face serious challenges, as gas and oil phases could not be distinguished by the simulator, while they have essentially different effects on the presence and strength of foam in terms of modeling. We provide in-depth thoughts and discussions on potential ways to improve current foam models to account for miscible and near-miscible conditions.

Abstract The Diyab play is an emerging unconventional play in the Middle East. Up to date, reservoir characterization assessments have proved adequate productivity of the play in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In this paper, an advanced simulation and modeling workflow is presented, which was applied on selected wells located on an appraisal area, by integrating geological, geomechanical, and hydraulic fracturing data. Results will be used to optimize future well landing points, well spacing and completion designs, allowing to enhance the Stimulated Rock Volume (SRV) and its consequent production. A 3D static model was built, by propagating across the appraisal area, all subsurface static properties from core-calibrated petrophysical and geomechanical logs which originate from vertical pilot wells. In addition, a Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) derived from numerous image logs was imported in the model. Afterwards, completion data from one multi-stage hydraulically fracked horizontal well was integrated into the sector model. Simulations of hydraulic fracturing were performed and the sector model was calibrated to the real hydraulic fracturing data. Different scenarios for the fracture height were tested considering uncertainties related to the fracture barriers. This has allowed for a better understanding of the fracture propagation and SRV creation in the reservoir at the main target. In the last step, production resulting from the SRV was simulated and calibrated to the field data. In the end, the calibrated parameters were applied to the newly drilled nearby horizontal wells in the same area, while they were hydraulically fractured with different completion designs and the simulated SRVs of the new wells were then compared with the one calculated on the previous well. Applying a fully-integrated geology, geomechanics, completion and production workflow has helped us to understand the impact of geology, natural fractures, rock mechanical properties and stress regimes in the SRV geometry for the unconventional Diyab play. This work also highlights the importance of data acquisition, reservoir characterization and of SRV simulation calibration processes. This fully integrated workflow will allow for an optimized completion strategy, well landing and spacing for the future horizontal wells. A fully multi-disciplinary simulation workflow was applied to the Diyab unconventional play in onshore UAE. This workflow illustrated the most important parameters impacting the SRV creation and production in the Diyab formation for he studied area. Multiple simulation scenarios and calibration runs showed how sensitive the SRV can be to different parameters and how well placement and fracture jobs can be possibly improved to enhance the SRV creation and ultimately the production performance.

Abstract As part of the production optimization exercise in J field, an initiative has been taken to enhance the field production target without well intervention. J field is a mature field; the wells are mostly gas lifted, and currently it is in production decline mode. As part of this optimization exercise, a network model with multiple platforms was updated with the surface systems (separator, compressors, pumps, FPSO) and pipelines in place to understand the actual pressure drop across the system. Modelling and calibration of the well and network model was done for the entire field, and the calibrated model was used for the production optimization exercise. A representative model updated with the current operating conditions is the key for the field production and asset management. In this exercise, a multiphase flow simulator for wells and pipelines has been utilized. A total of ∼50 wells (inclusive of idle wells) has been included in the network model. Basically, the exercise started by updating the single-well model using latest well test data. During the calibration at well level, several steps were taken, such as evaluation of historical production, reservoir pressure, and well intervention. This will provide a better idea on the fine-tuning parameters. Upon completion of calibrating well models, the next level was calibration of network model at the platform level by matching against the platform operating conditions (platform production rates, separator/pipeline pressure). The last stage was performing field network model calibration to match the overall field performance. During the platform stage calibration, some parameters such as pipeline ID, horizontal flow correlation, friction factor, and holdup factor were fine-tuned to match the platform level operating conditions. Most of the wells in J field have been calibrated by meeting the success criterion, which is within +/-5% for the production rates. However, there were some challenges in matching several wells due to well test data validity especially wells located on remote platform where there is no dedicated test separator as well as the impact of gas breakthrough, which may interfere to performance of wells. These wells were decided to be retested in the following month. As for the platform level matching, five platforms were matched within +/-10% against the reported production rates. During the evaluation, it was observed there were some uncertainties in the reported water and gas rates (platform level vs. well test data). This is something that can be looked into for a better measurement in the future. By this observation, it was suggested to select Platform 1 with the most reliable test data as well as the platform rate for the optimization process and qualifying for the field trial. Nevertheless, with the representative network model, two scenarios, reducing separator pressure at platform level and gas lift optimization by an optimal gas lift rate allocation, were performed. The model predicts that a separator pressure reduction of 30 psi in Platform 1 has a potential gain of ∼300 BOPD, which is aligned with the field results. Apart from that, there was also a potential savings in gas by utilizing the predicted allocated gas lift injection rate.

The analysis of the method of reducing gas obtaining by natural gas air reforming with cooling and drying of obtained products on the first stage of the process, their heat treatment in the catalyst layer, chilling and drying — on the second stage is made. It is determined that the temperature of a thermal gas treatment at the second stage of the process, shall not be less than 850–950 °C, which allows to increase the ratio (CO + H2)/CO2 in the resulting reducing gas. The values of the minimum temperature of gas processing on the second stage of the process depending on the pressure in the system are calculated. The total heat effect of chemical reactions depending on the temperature of gas heat treatment at different pressure is defined. It is shown the possibility of compensation for the heat expenditure required for the chemical reactions behavior in the temperature region above 850 °C by gas overheating in excess of the required level prior to its entering into catalyst bed on the second stage of the process.
