Abstract A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped and motile bacterium, named LAMW06T, was isolated from greenhouse soil in Beijing, China. In the 16S rRNA gene sequence comparison, strain LAMW06T had the highest similarity with Pseudomonas cuatrocienegasensis 1NT was 97.4%. Phylogenetic analysis base on the 16S rRNA and three housekeeping gene sequences (gyrB, rpoB and rpoD) indicated that LAMW06T represented a member of the genus Pseudomonas. The genome sequence size of the isolate was 5.5 Mb, with the DNA G+C content of 63.5 mol%. The average nucleotide identity and DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain LAMW06T and closely related members of Pseudomonas borbori R-20821T, Pseudomonas taeanensis MS-3T and Pseudomonas cuatrocienegasensis 1NT were 90.9%, 82.4%, 81.5 % and 43.0%, 25.9%, 24.6 % respectively. The major fatty acids contained summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω6c and/or C16:1 ω7c), C18:1 ω7c and C16:0. The primary respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-9. The main polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, six aminophospholipids, six phospholipids, one aminolipid and one glycolipid. According to the genotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic data, strain LAMW06T represents a novel species within the genus Pseudomonas, for which the name Pseudomonas tumuqiensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is LAMW06T (=GDMCC 1.2003T =KCTC 72829T).

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, aerobic, non-flagellated, chemoheterotrophic bacterium, designated IMCC14385T, was isolated from surface seawater of the East Sea, Republic of Korea. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that IMCC14385T represented a member of the genus Halioglobus sharing 94.6–97.8 % similarities with species of the genus. Whole-genome sequencing of IMCC14385T revealed a genome size of 4.3 Mbp and DNA G+C content of 56.7 mol%. The genome of IMCC14385T shared an average nucleotide identity of 76.6 % and digital DNA–DNA hybridization value of 21.6 % with the genome of Halioglobus japonicus KCTC 23429T. The genome encoded the complete poly-β-hydroxybutyrate biosynthesis pathway. The strain contained summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω7c and/or C18 : 1 ω6c), summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or C16 : 1 ω6c) and C17 : 1 ω8c as the predominant cellular fatty acids as well as ubiquinone-8 (Q-8) as the respiratory quinone. The polar lipids detected in the strain were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, five unidentified phospholipids, an unidentified aminolipid, an unidentified aminophospholipid and four unidentified lipids. On the basis of taxonomic data obtained in this study, it is suggested that IMCC14385T represents a novel species of the genus Halioglobus , for which the name Halioglobus maricola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is IMCC14385T (=KCTC 72520T=NBRC 114072T).

A Gram-negative bacterium designated LA1T was isolated from water collected in hypersaline Lake Laysan on Laysan Island in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Cells occurred singly as fine rods to short filaments. Growth in 50 % strength marine broth occurred optimally when the medium contained 7·5–10 % (w/v) NaCl. The major fatty acids in LA1T grown at 15 and 30 °C were 12-methyl tetradecanoic acid and 13-methyl tetradecanoic acid, respectively. The nucleotide sequence of the 16S rRNA gene showed that LA1T belonged in the Cytophaga–Flavobacterium–Bacteroides (CFB) group in the domain Bacteria. The closest described neighbour in terms of 16S rRNA gene sequence identity was Psychroflexus torquis ACAM 623T (94·4 % over 1423 bases), an obligate psychrophile from Antarctic sea-ice. The G+C content of 35·0 mol% was consistent with this affiliation. Phenotypic and genotypic analyses, including DNA hybridization, indicated that LA1T could be assigned to the genus Psychroflexus but, based on significant differences, including growth at 43 °C, it constitutes a novel species, Psychroflexus tropicus sp. nov., for which LA1T (=ATCC BAA-734T=DSM 15496T) is the type strain.

Three exopolysaccharide-producing bacteria, designated strains DRP28T, DRP29 and DRP31, were isolated from the rhizoplane of Angelica sinensis from the Geumsan, Republic of Korea. Cells were straight rods, Gram reaction-negative, aerobic, non-motile, and catalase- and oxidase- positive. Flexirubin-type pigments were absent. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene indicated that these bacteria belong to the genus Mucilaginibacter in the phylum Bacteroidetes. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to strains of recognized species of the genus Mucilaginibacter were 93.8–97.4 %. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH). The strains contained MK-7 as the major isoprenoid quinone. Strains DRP28T, DRP29 and DRP31 formed a single, distinct genomospecies with DNA G+C contents of 41.9–42.7 mol% and DNA hybridization values of 82.6–86.8 %; the strains exhibited DNA–DNA hybridization values of only 20.4–41.3 % with related species of the genus Mucilaginibacter. On the basis of evidence presented in this study, strains DRP28T, DRP29 and DRP31 were considered to represent a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter, for which the name Mucilaginibacter polysacchareus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DRP28T ( = KACC 15075T  = NBRC 107757T).

We isolated a strain coded Esc2AmT during a study focused on the microbial diversity of adult specimens of the bark beetle Hylesinus fraxini. Its 16S rRNA gene sequence had 99.4 % similarity with respect to its closest relative, Pseudomonas rhizosphaerae IH5T. The analysis of partial sequences of the housekeeping genes rpoB, rpoD and gyrB confirmed that strain Esc2AmT formed a cluster with P. rhizosphaerae IH5T clearly separated from the remaining species of the genus Pseudomonas. Strain Esc2AmT had polar flagella and could grow at temperatures from 4 °C to 30 °C. The respiratory quinone was Q9 and the main fatty acids were C16 : 0, C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c in summed feature 8 and C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c in summed feature 3. DNA–DNA hybridization results showed 51 % relatedness with respect to P. rhizosphaerae IH5T. Oxidase, catalase and urease-positive, the arginine dihydrolase system was present but nitrate reduction and β-galactosidase production were negative. Aesculin hydrolysis was positive. Based on the results from the genotypic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic analyses, we propose the classification of strain Esc2AmT as representing a novel species of the genus Pseudomonas, for which we propose the name Pseudomonas coleopterorum sp. nov. The type strain is Esc2AmT ( = LMG 28558T = CECT 8695T).

A Gram-positive, facultative anaerobic, catalase-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming and rod-shaped lactic acid bacterium strain, denoted as NFFJ11T and isolated from total mixed fermentation feed in the Republic of Korea, was characterized through polyphasic approaches, including sequence analyses of the 16S rRNA gene and housekeeping genes (rpoA and pheS), determination of average nucleotide identity and in silico DNA–DNA hybridization, fatty acid methyl ester analysis, and phenotypic characterization. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA, rpoA and pheS gene sequences revealed that strain NFFJ11T belonged to the genus Companilactobacillus . The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain NFFJ11T exhibited high similarity to Companilactobacillus formosensis S215T (99.66 %), Companilactobacillus farciminis Rv4 naT (99.53 %), Companilactobacillus crustorum LMG 23699T (99.19 %), Companilactobacillus futsaii YM 0097T (99.06 %), Companilactobacillus zhachilii HBUAS52074T (98.86 %) and Companilactobacillus heilongiiangensis S4-3T (98.66 %). However, average nucleotide identity and in silico DNA–DNA hybridization values for these type strains were in the range of 79.90–92.93 % and 23.80–49.30 %, respectively, which offer evidence that strain NFFJ11T belongs to a novel species of the genus Companilactobacillus . The cell-wall peptidoglycan type was A4α (l-Lys–d-Asp) and the G+C content of the genomic DNA was 35.7 mol%. The main fatty acids of strain NFFJ11T were C18 : 1  ω9c (43.3 %), C16 : 0 (20.1 %) and summed feature 7 (18.3 %; comprising any combination of C19 : 1  ω7c, C19 : 1  ω6c and C19 : 0 cyclo ω10c). Through polyphasic taxonomic analysis, it was observed that strain NFFJ11T represents a novel species belonging to the genus Companilactobacillus , for which the name Companilactobacillus pabuli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NFFJ11T (= KACC 21771T= JCM 34088T).

A Gram-reaction-positive, rod-shaped, spore-forming bacterium, designated Gsoil 1105T, was isolated from soil of a ginseng field in Pocheon Province in South Korea and characterized in order to determine its taxonomic position. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that the isolate belongs to the order Bacillales, showing the highest level of sequence similarity with respect to Tumebacillus permanentifrigoris Eur1 9.5T (94.6 %). The phylogenetic distances from other described species with validly published names within the order Bacillales were greater than 9.0 %. Strain Gsoil 1105T had a genomic DNA G+C content of 55.6 mol% and menaquinone 7 (MK-7) as the major respiratory quinone. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. On the basis of its phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain Gsoil 1105T represents a novel species of the genus Tumebacillus, for which the name Tumebacillus ginsengisoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Gsoil 1105T ( = KCTC 13942T  = DSM 18389T).

A Gram-positive, aerobic, non-motile and coccoid actinobacterium, designated P31T, was isolated from a traditional, fermented seafood. The strain was catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. Cells grew in the presence of 0–15.0 % (w/v) NaCl, and at pH 5–10 and 15–37 °C. Major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. Strain P31T contained MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone. The DNA G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain P31T was 65.2 mol%. A phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain P31T was most closely related to Kocuria kristinae DSM 20032T, with 96.9 % similarity, and these two strains clustered together in constructed phylogenetic trees. The DNA–DNA hybridization value between strain P31T and K. kristinae DSM 20032T was 21.1 %. On the basis of the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, it is suggested that strain P31T represents a novel species of the genus Kocuria, for which the name Kocuria koreensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is P31T (=KCTC 19595T=JCM 15915T).

In this study, a novel betaproteobacterium, strain DPN7T, was isolated under mesophilic conditions from compost because of its capacity to utilize the organic disulfide 3,3′-dithiodipropionic acid. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain DPN7T revealed 98.5 % similarity to that of Tetrathiobacter kashmirensis LMG 22695T. Values for sequence similarity to members of the genera Alcaligenes, Castellaniella and Taylorella, the nearest neighbours of the genus Tetrathiobacter, were about 95 % or less. The DNA G+C content of strain DPN7T was 55.1 mol%. The level of DNA–DNA hybridization between strain DPN7T and T. kashmirensis LMG 22695T was 41 %, whereas it was much lower between strain DPN7T and Alcaligenes faecalis LMG 1229T (7 %) or Castellaniella defragrans LMG 18538T (5 %). This genotypic divergence was supported by differences in biochemical and chemotaxonomic characteristics. For this reason, and because of the differences in the protein and fatty acid profiles, strain DPN7T should be classified within a novel species of Tetrathiobacter, for which the name Tetrathiobacter mimigardefordensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is strain DPN7T (=DSM 17166T=LMG 22922T).

A Gram-positive, yellowish bacterium strain AK-1Twas isolated from soil sample collected from peanut (Arachis hypogaea) crop field and studied by using a polyphasic approach. The organism had morphological and chemotaxonomic properties consistent with its classification in the genusAgromyces. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain AK-1Twas closely related toAgromyces aurantiacus(98.6%) followed byAgromyces soli(98.3%),Agromyces tropicus(97.6%),Agromyces ulmi(97.3%),Agromyces flavus(97.2%), andAgromyces italicus(97.0%), whereas the sequence similarity values with respect to the otherAgromycesspecies with validly published names were between 95.3 and 96.7 %. However, the DNA-DNA hybridization values obtained between strain AK-1Tand other related strains were well below the threshold that is required for the proposal of a novel species. The DNAG+Ccontent of the strain is 71.8 mol%. The above data in combination with the phenotypic distinctiveness of AK-1Tclearly indicate that the strain represents a novel species, for which the nameAgromyces arachidissp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AK-1T(=MTCC 10524T= JCM 19251T).

A novel thermophilic and endospore-forming Gram-positive bacterium capable of assimilating and isomerizing l-ribose was isolated from a volcanic area in Likupang, Indonesia. The isolate, RI-39T, was able to grow at high temperatures (37–60 °C); optimum growth was observed at pH 6.5 and 45 °C. The strain contained MK-7 (87 %) as the main respiratory quinone and had a DNA G+C content of 51 mol%. The major cellular fatty acids of the isolate were iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0 and the predominant polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and lysyl-phosphatidylglycerol. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the isolate represents an evolutionary lineage that is distinct from those of other Cohnella species. Based on morphological, physiological and chemotaxonomic characteristics and 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons, it is proposed that strain RI-39T represents a novel species, Cohnella laeviribosi sp. nov. The type strain is RI-39T (=KCTC 3987T =KCCM 10653PT =CCUG 52217T).
