Abstract The present study was aimed to explore the characterization of polyhydroxy butrate extracted from the bacterial strain under optimized conditions for the production of bioplastic. Under optimized fermentation conditions, Polyhydroxy butrate (PHB) was extracted and subjected to examine their properties via Thin Layer Chromotogram (TLC), Gas Chromotogram- Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS), Fourier Transform Infrared spectrum (FTIR). The presence of a brown spot in the TLC plate indicates the presence of hydroxylgroup which is similar to the polymer group. GC-MS analysis of extracted PHB shows peaks at the retention time of 3.8, 11.6 which is corresponding to octadecanoic acid, hexadecanoic acid, butyl -2-ethylester confirms the presence of polymeric nature in the extracted PHB. The absorption bands of FTIR at 1719–1720 cm −1 indicate the presence of C=O group of PHB. The absorption peaks at wave numbers 500-1000 cm -1 , 1055 cm -1 and 1230 cm -1 denotes (OH) group, (C–O) stretch and (C=O) ester group. From these results, it was confirmed that the extracted PHB is having the potential to replace petroleum plastic.

Fixed oil obtained from the seeds of Momordica tuberosa (Roxb) Cogn. fruits (family: Cucurbitaceae) was analyzed using GC-MS. Five compounds, namely palmitic acid (hexadecanoic acid), oleic acid (9-octadecenoic acid), stearic acid (octadecanoic acid), ?-eleostearic acid (9, 11, 13-octadecatrienoic acid) and gama-linolenic acid (6, 9, 12-octadecatrienoic acid) were found to be major compounds in fixed oil obtained from the seeds of M. tuberosa fruits. Physical constants saponification value, unsaponifiable matter and acid value were found to be 182.4, 1.56% w/w and 11.44 respectively.

Abstract The positions of 1La and 1Lb type absorption bands as well as the fluorescence polarization and natural lifetime show that p-donor substituted benzonitriles emit from a 1Lb-state. On the other hand, the nature of the lowest excited state of p-substituted ethylbenzoates depends upon the kind of the donor. In case of a dialkylamino group as donor substituent the emission occurs from the 1La-state, in case of weeker donors, like methoxy, from the 1Lb-state. In the intermediate case of p-aminoethylbenzoate the excited state depends upon the polarity of the solvent.The 1Lb← 1A transition occurs at higher wave numbers for the donor substituent ethylbenzoates than for the correspondingly substituted benzonitriles, although the ester group represents the stronger acceptor substituent than the nitrile group in spectroscopic respect. This effect is interpreted using perturbation theory according to Petruska.

Atmospheric particulate samples were collected during January, February, April and May 2012, separately. Twenty-one fatty acids and seven dicarboxylic acids were measured by GC-MS. The results show that average mass concentrations of fatty acids are 809.24ng/m³, 545.34ng/m³, 386.96ng/m³ and dicarboxylic acids are 215.14 ng/m³, 156.45 ng/m³, 111.43 ng/m³ in PM10, PM2.5, PM1, respectively. Fatty acids and dicarboxylic acids concentrate mainly in the PM1. C11-C24 of fatty acids exhibit a significant even carbon predominances, but dicarboxylic acids present no parity preponderance. In the fatty acids, the concentration of hexadecanoic acid is the highest with that of octadecanoic acid followed; Nonandioic acid is the highest in dicarboxylic acids. The results of source apportionments indicate that the fatty acids are mainly related with human activities. Coal burning for heating is the most important source in January and February, but its contribution decreases sharply in April and May for fatty acids; The main source of dicarboxylic acids is photochemical reactions.

A study on the physical and mechanical properties of beeswax (BW), candelilla wax (CW), paraffin wax (PW) and blends was carried out with the aim to evaluate their usefulness as coatings for cheeses. Waxes were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), permeability, viscosity, flexural and tensile tests and scanning electron microscopy. Cheeses were coated with the waxes and stored for 5 weeks at 30 °C. Measured parameters were weight, moisture, occurrence and degree of fractures, and dimensional changes. The crystal phases identified by XRD for the three waxes allowed them to determine the length of alkanes and the nonlinear compounds in crystallizable forms in waxes. FTIR spectra showed absorption bands between 1800 and 800 cm−1 related to carbonyls in BW and CW. In DSC, the onset of melting temperature was 45.5 °C for BW, and >54 °C for CW and PW. Cheeses coated with BW did not show cracks after storage. Cheeses coated with CW and PW showed microcraks, and lost weight, moisture and shrunk. In the flexural and tensile tests, BW was ductile; CW and PW were brittle. BW blends with CW or PW displays a semi ductile behavior. Cheeses coated with BW blends lost less than 5% weight during storage. The best waxes were BW and the blends.

Abstract Dissolution of sulfur-cured, carbon black-loaded copolymers and their blends with cis-1,4-polybutadiene (PBD) are brought about by boiling with o-dichlorobenzene which contains a small amount of 2,2′-dibenzamidodiphenyl disulfide. The resulting slurries are subjected to a sequence of separations which include high-speed centrifugation to remove solids, and solvent precipitation followed by filtration to isolate the precipitates. The precipitates are washed with solvent to remove soluble organic materials followed by carbon disulfide washing to dissolve the polymers. Cast films of the polymers are obtained by evaporating the carbon disulfide washings onto sodium chloride discs. The infrared spectra of the cast films of these preparations are very similar to those of their respective polymers prior to loading and curing. Calculations for relative concentrations of bound styrene and PBD micro-structures permit nominal identification of the kinds of styrene-butadiene rubber and the amounts of cis-1,4-PBD used in a cured rubber formulation. Absorption bands used are near 3.35 μ for cis-1,4-PBD, 6.65 μ for bound styrene, 10.35 μ for trans-1,4-PBD; and 11.0 μ for vinyl-1,2-PBD. Efforts are being made to improve the data by using a grating infrared instrument and also to extend the calibrations to include other rubber blends.

Layer-by-layer films of poly (allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and graphene oxide (GO) were characterized, looking at growth with the number of bilayers, morphology, and electrical properties. The PAH/GO films revealed a linear increase in absorbance with the increase in the number of deposited bilayers, allowing the determination that 10.7 ± 0.1 mg m−2 of GO is adsorbed per unit of area of each bilayer. GO absorption bands at 146, 210, 247 and 299 nm, assigned to π-π* and n-π* transitions in the aromatic ring (phenol) and of the carboxylic group, respectively, were characterized by vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy. The morphological characterization of these films demonstrated that they are not completely uniform, with a bilayer thickness of 10.5 ± 0.7 nm. This study also revealed that the films are composed of GO and/or PAH/GO fibers and that GO is completely adsorbed on top of PAH. The electrical properties of the films reveal that PAH/GO films present a semiconductor behavior. In addition, a slight decrease in conduction was observed when films were prepared in the presence of visible light, likely due to the presence of oxygen and moisture that contributes to the damage of GO molecules.

Abstract Two new organic-inorganic hybrid materials, (C6H10N2).Cl2 (I) and [C6H10N2]2ZnCl4 (II), have been synthesized by hydrothermal method and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and XRD pattern investigations. These two compounds are crystallized in the monoclinic system; C2/c space group. In the both structures, the anionic-cationic entities are interconnected by hydrogen bonding contacts and p-p Interaction forming three-dimensional networks. Intermolecular interactions were investigated by Hirshfeld surfaces and the contacts of the four different chloride atoms in (II) were compared. The vibrational absorption bands were identified by infrared spectroscopy. These compounds were also investigated by solid state 13C NMR spectroscopy.

ABSTRACTIn this work, we report on the material properties of ZnO doped with Mn, Co, and Fe grown by a modified melt growth technique. X-ray diffraction measurements show that transition metals can be incorporated on Zn sites; an increase in the lattice parameter is apparent with increasing doping level. UV-visible transmission and reflectance measurements have also been performed. Absorption bands in the visible regime are distinctive to the individual transition metal dopants. A noticeable shift in the optical band edge has been observed from these Mn/Co/Fe-doped ZnO crystals in comparison with the undoped material. ZnO may also provide a suitable platform for the incorporation of transition metal elements through high temperature near equilibrium growth processes; however, further work is required in order to employ these materials for spintronic applications.
