Abstract High-density precipitation data is always desired to capture the heterogeneity of precipitation to accurately describe the components of the hydrological cycle. However, equipping and maintaining a high-density rain gauge network involves high costs, and the existing rain gauges are often unable to meet the density requirements. The objective of this study is to provide a new method to analyze the spatiotemporal variability of the precipitation field and to solve the problem of insufficient site density. To this end, the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) method is proposed, which can analyze the spatial distribution characteristics of rainfall fields to solve data shortages. To demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of the proposed methodology, four districts and counties (Hongshan District, Jianli County, Sui County, and Xuanen County) in Hubei province in China were selected as case studies. The principal results are as follows. (1) The proposed method is effective in analyzing the spatiotemporal variability of the rainfall field to reconstruct rainfall data in ungauged basins. (2) Compared with the commonly used Thiessen Polygon method, the Inverse Distance Weighting method, and the Kriging method, POD is more accurate and convenient, and the root mean squared error is reduced from 3.22, 1.83, 2.19 to 2.09; the correlation coefficients are improved from 0.60, 0.85, 0.79 to 0.89, respectively. (3) The POD method performs particularly well in simulating the peak value and the peak time and can offer a meaningful reference for analyzing the spatial distribution of rainfall.

Soil nutrients are essential factors that reflect farmland quality. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are essential elements for plants, while silicon is considered a “quasi-essential” element. This study investigated the spatial distribution of plant nutrients in soil in a hilly region of the Pearl River Delta in China. A total of 201 soil samples were collected from farmland topsoil (0–20 cm) for the analysis of total nitrogen (TN), available phosphorus (AP), available potassium (AK), and available silicon (ASi). The coefficients of variation ranged from 47.88% to 76.91%. The NSRs of TN, AP, AK, and ASi were 0.15, 0. 07, 0.12, and 0.13, respectively. The NSRs varied from 0.02 to 0.20. All variables exhibited weak spatial dependence (R2 < 0.5), except for TN (R2 = 0.701). After comparing the prediction accuracy of the different methods, we used the inverse distance weighting method to analyze the spatial distribution of plant nutrients in soil. The uniform spatial distribution of AK, TN overall showed a trend of increasing from northeast to southwest, and the overall spatial distribution of AP and ASi showed that the northeast was higher than the southwest. This study provides support for the delimitation of basic farmland protection areas, the formulation of land use spatial planning, and the formulation of accurate farmland protection policies.

We have devised a new method for the fractionation of human plasma high density lipoprotein (HDL). The HDL was chromatographed on DEAE-agarose columns using a continuous gradient of 0.06–0.15 M NaCl. The elution pattern obtained showed three phases, each with differing peptide composition. Examination of the three subfractions showed that each contained both apo A-I and apo A-II, but indifferent proportions. Subfraction 1 contained noapoC-II orC-III-1 and only a trace of apo C-III-2, subfraction 2 contained apo C-II and C-III-1 but no C-III-2, while subfraction 3 contained considerable apo C-III-2 with only traces of apo C-II or C-III-1.

This article describes how continuous GIS-MCDM problems are commonly managed by combining some weighting method based on pairwise comparisons of criteria with an aggregation method. The reliability of this approach may be questioned, though. First, assigning weights to criteria, without taking into consideration the actual consequences or values of the alternatives, is in itself controversial. Second, the value functions obtained by this approach are in most cases linear, which is seldom the case in reality. The authors present a new method for GIS-MCDM in continuous choice models based on Even Swaps. The method is intuitive and easy to use, based on value trade-offs, and thus not relying on criteria weighting. Value functions obtained when using the method may be linear or non-linear, and thereby are more sensitive to the characteristics of the decision space. The performed case study showed promising results regarding the reliability of the method in GIS-MCDM context.

The paper deals with modification of cement composite and concrete with nanocellulose in low and high density. The author presents the study results of the influence of nanocellulose on the cement composite hardening process, as well as the physical and mechanical properties of heavy concrete. The influence of the used additive on the rheological and strength characteristics of concrete is revealed. A new method is proposed to improve the material performance.

The mango fruit fly (Ceratitis cosyra Walker) is the major pest of economic importance and which restricts mango exports from infested production areas in the SADC region. The effect of three pruning techniques, box/rectangle, spherical/round and the central leader, on assessing spatial distribution of fruit fly populations in high density mango production were investigated at Chiredzi Research station (21°01’S, 31°33’E) from 2010 to 2013. Results showed a significant rise in the number of adult fly catches among pruning techniques as from July to December (p< 0.05). Traps baited with Malathion 25% WP with molasses as an attractant were used to trap the flies. Results from all treatments indicated a significant rise in mean adult fruit fly catches from the months of July to December. It can be concluded that spatial distribution of the mango fruit fly is influenced by the fruiting and ripening patterns of mango.

Abstract. Objective criteria for catchment classification are identified by the scientific community among the key research topics for improving the interpretation and representation of the spatiotemporal variability of streamflow. A promising approach to catchment classification makes use of unsupervised neural networks (Self Organising Maps, SOM's), which organise input data through non-linear techniques depending on the intrinsic similarity of the data themselves. Our study considers ~300 Italian catchments scattered nationwide, for which several descriptors of the streamflow regime and geomorphoclimatic characteristics are available. We qualitatively and quantitatively compare in the context of PUB (Prediction in Ungauged Basins) a reference classification, RC, with four alternative classifications, AC's. RC was identified by using indices of the streamflow regime as input to SOM, whereas AC's were identified on the basis of catchment descriptors that can be derived for ungauged basins. One AC directly adopts the available catchment descriptors as input to SOM. The remaining AC's are identified by applying SOM to two sets of derived variables obtained by applying Principal Component Analysis (PCA, second AC) and Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA, third and fourth ACs) to the available catchment descriptors. First, we measure the similarity between each AC and RC. Second, we use AC's and RC to regionalize several streamflow indices and we compare AC's with RC in terms of accuracy of streamflow prediction. In particular, we perform an extensive cross-validation to quantify nationwide the accuracy of predictions in ungauged basins of mean annual runoff, mean annual flood, and flood quantiles associated with given exceedance probabilities. Results of the study show that CCA can significantly improve the effectiveness of SOM classifications for the PUB problem.

Considerable evidence exists that current global temperatures are higher than at any time during the past millennium. However, the long-term impacts of rising temperatures and associated shifts in the hydrological cycle on the productivity of ecosystems remain poorly understood for mid to high northern latitudes. Here, we quantify species-specific spatiotemporal variability in terrestrial aboveground biomass stem growth across Canada’s boreal forests from 1950 to the present. We use 873 newly developed tree-ring chronologies from Canada’s National Forest Inventory, representing an unprecedented degree of sampling standardization for a large-scale dendrochronological study. We find significant regional- and species-related trends in growth, but the positive and negative trends compensate each other to yield no strong overall trend in forest growth when averaged across the Canadian boreal forest. The spatial patterns of growth trends identified in our analysis were to some extent coherent with trends estimated by remote sensing, but there are wide areas where remote-sensing information did not match the forest growth trends. Quantifications of tree growth variability as a function of climate factors and atmospheric CO2 concentration reveal strong negative temperature and positive moisture controls on spatial patterns of tree growth rates, emphasizing the ecological sensitivity to regime shifts in the hydrological cycle. An enhanced dependence of forest growth on soil moisture during the late-20th century coincides with a rapid rise in summer temperatures and occurs despite potential compensating effects from increased atmospheric CO2 concentration.

The Barind tract of Bangladesh suffers from frequent drought due to erratic rainfall distribution. In the present study details analysis of rainfall data has been carried out for the years 1971-2010. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) which is followed by gamma distribution is used to evaluate drought vulnerability based on frequency and severity of drought events at multiple time steps (3, 5 and 12 months). Drought severity maps are generated in a GIS (Geographical Information System) environment using inverse distance weighting method. Critical (threshold) rainfall values are derived for each station at multiple-time steps in varying drought categories to determine least amount of rainfall required to avoid from drought initiation. The study found that drought vulnerability portrays a very diverse but consistent picture with varying time steps. Analysis and interpretation of the map shows a similar spatial distribution of drought in pre-monsoon season but in monsoon season rainfall deficits shifts its position time to time and occurred in certain discrete pockets. In 12 months period the spatial distribution of drought was almost similar with monsoon season. In pre-monsoon season drought severity was higher in north eastern part of the study area compare to other parts. The study also evident that critical threshold values of rainfall to avoid drought condition was higher in the northern part of high Barind than southern part.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jesnr.v5i2.14832 J.
