Abstract Background Changes in the health insurance law in 2005 led to the changes in the organization of the provision of dental health care in Serbia. Prior to this law, dental health care was available for every resident covered by mandatory health insurance without additional out-of-pocket payments. Now the dental health care is available only for children under the age of 18, students under the age of 26, pregnant women and for emergency dental care. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of unmet dental health care needs among adults and to assess the factors associated with unmet dental health care needs. Methods The study was the secondary analysis of the data from the Survey on income and Living conditions in Serbia, conducted during 2017. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to assess the association of unmet dental health care needs and socio-demographic and socio-economic factors. Results Total of 1718/12437 (12.1%) adults reported unmet dental health care needs. The main reason reported was not being able to afford it (1014/1718, 59.0%), along with the fear of doctors or hospitals (260/1718, 15.5%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed the association of unmet dental health care needs and being employed (OR: 1.50, 95% CI: 1.24-1.80), unemployed (OR: 1.96, 95% CI: 1.65-2.33), having primary (OR: 1.47, 95% CI: 1.16-1.86), or secondary education (OR: 1.43, 95% CI: 1.21-1.69), being divorced (OR: 1.47, 95% CI: 1.17-1.85), having good (OR:1.44, 95% CI: 1.20- 1.74), average (OR: 2.36, 95% CI: 1.91-2.92), poor (OR: 2.29, 95%CI: 1.77-2.97), or very poor general health (OR: 2.42, 95% CI: 1.68-3.48), having limitation in daily activities (OR: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.60-0.77) and being materially deprived (OR: 1.67, 95% CI: 1.46-1.90). Conclusions The prevalence of unmet dental health care needs in high among adults in Serbia. There is an association between social characteristics and health status with unmet dental health care needs in Serbia. Key messages There is a high prevalence of unmet dental health care needs in Serbia. Unmet dental health care needs are associated with social characteristics and health status.

Background/Objective: This retrospective comparative analysis evaluates the patterns of dental treatment undertaken on uncooperative healthy and special health care needs patients with respect to different age categories. Study design: This study reviewed the data from 342 patients (205 male and 137 female), between the ages of 1 and 12 at the time of the treatment, who had received comprehensive dental treatment under general anesthesia in the operating rooms of the Faculty of Medicine, Cukurova University from January 2016 through December 2018. Patient records were divided into two groups according to the patient’s medical and mental conditions. SHCN patients (272 patients) with at least one type of mental, medical or physical disability were assigned to Group S and uncooperative healthy patients (70 patients) were assigned to Group H. Treatment modalities of restorative procedures, number of extracted teeth, pulp therapy, and other dental procedures were compared between these groups with respect to eruptional stages in the dentition (<6 years and 6–12 years) Results: There was no significant difference between groups H and S in terms of the mean duration of dental treatment among age categories in both groups. The mean number of extracted teeth was significantly greater in Group S. The mean number of teeth treated by restorative procedures in groups H and S were 4.40 and 4.40, respectively, showing no significant difference. Conclusions: Comparison of two different groups, with patients who have received comprehensive dental treatment in an operating room, revealed that the number of teeth extracted was significantly higher for the SHCN patients. On the basis of our results, it was concluded that medical and mental conditions affect dental treatment modalities. Preventive treatment strategies are particularly required for patients with SHCN and it is important to educate patients and their parents/caregivers on the importance of home dental care.

Abstract: Dental health education (DHE) is important to improve the community oral health. Visually impaired children who have limited vision require appropriate methods according to the acceptance of them by maximizing the provision of education through the senses other than sight in carrying out treatment and prevention efforts. This study was aimed to obtain the effectiveness of DHE using a combination method in visually impaired children. This was a literature review study using the Google Scholar database, PubMed/ National Library of Medicine (NCBI), and Springer Link. After data selection based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, a critical appraisal was carried out. There were 10 literatures (six literatures of randomized controlled trial studies and four literatures of nonrandomized controlled trial/quasi experimental studies). The results showed that on average, the oral hygiene index score was lower after the intervention compared to before the DHE intervention using a combination method (braille, audio, and tactile). Moreover, the intervention decreased significantly the plaque index score and increased the number of visually impaired children who had good oral hygiene categories. In conclusion, DHE for visually impaired children using a combination method is effective in improving oral hygiene. Keywords: dental health education (DHE); combination method; oral hygiene; visually impaired children  Abstrak: Edukasi kesehatan gigi penting untuk meningkatkan kesehatan gigi dan mulut masyarakat. Aim: The aim of this study was the analysis of the social and health status characteristics of the population with unmet dental health care needs. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study included 20,069 respondents from the Survey on Income and Living Conditions (SILC) in the Republic of Serbia in 2014. Results: Nearly every sixth citizen (16.1%) reported unmet dental health care needs. Participants between the ages of 27 and 44 years (OR: 1.48, 95% CI: 1.21 - 1.82), and between 45 and 64 years (OR: 1.49, 95% CI: 1.19 - 1.86), participants who assessed their health status as: good (OR: 1.91, 95% CI: 1.63 - 2.25), fair (OR: 3.16, 95% CI: 2.64 - 3.77), bad (OR: 3.65, 95% CI: 2.94 - 4.53), or very bad (OR: 4.22, 95% CI: 3.10 - 5.74), had a higher likelihood of reporting unmet dental health care needs. The most frequent reasons for unmet dental health care needs were financial obstacles to the accessibility of dental health care (66.6%) and fear or treatment (15.1%). Conclusion: The study found associations between unmet dental health care needs and social and health status characteristics. Health policy should adopt a multidimensional approach and eliminate barriers which restrict the accessibility of dental health care.
