The purpose of this study was to measure the effectiveness of learning English between the methods in-class with a method of self-learning using computer aids and operational support staff in an international school.  The research method used is descriptive method with a final score comparing between learning results and analyze how the increased English proficiency. A gap still exists in terms of English language proficiency for the operational support staff, we conducted this training program in the classroom with instructors as mentors and teachers in the learning process. And due to busy work schedules and shift changes are different, this learning program made independently by using a computer. The participants who experienced an increase in value is only one person or 6.67%. With these results it may be concluded that a training program with the guidance of instructors in the classroom are more effective and successful in providing a better ability than the self-learning program with the help of computers. Things that affect, among others, are motivation to learn, as seen from the low frequency of attendance at the laboratory (average 93.33% attendance below the required number of attendance), for participants with secondary education level and lower, self-study programs does not seem to be effective, and computer media can not replace the function of a mentor or teacher.

ABSTRACTNursing a person with dementia in a ward setting can be stressful and a challenge for staff and patients alike. Healthcare assistants are identified as requiring a specific training program. They form part of the front-line workforce and yet have the least access to training but often most contact with patients. The program in this study focused on person-centered care and used six self-study workbooks. Experienced registered nurses are trained to be facilitators of 12 group discussions in the ward setting. The training program viewed the facilitator as playing a key role in empowering the healthcare assistant but also in promoting reflective practice. The outcomes to date have been positive and showed a development in confidence and competence of the healthcare assistants involved.

Within the context of lockdown and pandemic situation, by taking all these conditions in attention, government of Punjab introduced compact and shortened curriculum named as Accelerated learning program for 8th grade students. The accelerated syllabi are usually introduced and implemented to fulfill short term objectives. The current study aimed at investigating how efficient and effective this ALP can be in achieving estimated language proficiency of students. Furthermore, there is some need to get awareness to teachers’ preference and their ALP teaching practices meeting the desired aims. The syllabus has been introduced to minimize the Covid-19-driven learning loss and expedite the teaching and learning procedures to damage control and maximize learning outputs. Therefore, current study was designed as experimental so that researchers can check the impact of ALP on students’ achievements. Moreover, the effect of the independent variable ALP course was checked upon the English proficiency of the learners which is termed as a dependent variable. The 8th grade students at government schools of Bahawalpur district were taken as the population of the study out of which only 60 students were selected by using a random sampling technique and 80 teachers were also selected by using a purposive sampling technique. The findings of the study indicate that there is little or no impact on students’ learning outcomes by the use of ALP course for teaching English language. It is also found that teachers face difficulty while teaching through ALP because it is too compact and it did not include all the language components and skills. In order to obtain the maximum output from ALP, it is suggested to devise comprehensive lesson planning and proper teaching strategies with revised and modified pattern of learning outcomes.

This study details the procedure and results of developing a mission statement at a language institute for the purpose of obtaining a program accreditation from an international language commission. A serious self-study process results in the development of a solid, true and ambitious mission since the mission covers all areas related to achieving students learning outcomes. It shows how the mission was changed and why. It also details how the new mission resulted in the improving quality, especially in the areas of curriculum and professional development of faculty and staff. Other aspects, such as facilities and student affairs were modified to achieve the goals and objectives of the new mission. This essay reports the changes that were implemented during the process of mission statement development. These changes resulted in plans to improve the quality of the English language teaching at the English Language Academy (ELA) which offers an English language program to Foundation Year students whose success in the program is a college requirement at the University of Business and Technology (UBT) in the academic year of 2016-2017. The program also aims at improving the English language proficiency of students so that they can use it in their future professions considering that the university logo is “Education for Job Opportunities.” The third main goal or aim is related to the use of English to assist students in personal and social life. Critical thinking surfaced as a main concern of those surveyed for needs assessment. The report concludes with recommending conducting thorough and genuine self-study process which certainly ends with quality improvement. The report uses data collected from five questionnaires completed by students, faculty, alumni and employers of UBT graduates. The purpose of the survey was to identify the needs of the students. Based on those needs, the learning outcomes are identified and accordingly, the new mission statement is developed.

With rapid development in e-learning in Malaysia Higher learning institutions, UiTM also plays a proactive role in knowledge dissemination and acculturation by embarking on online training. With the increasing use of Internet and computer at the workplace, e-training should be recognized as a way to meet the current challenges and workplace demands to propagate life long learning and learning organization. This paper studies the self-directed learning experience on an on-line English Language training program known as Online English Language Training (OLELT). The training program was first implemented on UiTM Kelantan lecturers to help them improve their English Language proficiency. Using a case study, data were collected and analyzed qualitatively using in-depth interviews and observations on ten lecturers from various disciplines. The emerging themes show that online training is efficient, cost effective and motivating if it is properly planned and designed. It also promotes self-paced and continuous learning experience. However, there are barriers and constraints faced by the participants that need to be addressed.

A constructivist approach to language learning can motivate students by activating their brains to create new knowledge and reflect more consistently and deeply on their language learning experience. The present study focused on assessing the use of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) speakers Google Home Mini and Amazon Alexa as part of a Blended Learning (BL) environment to improve the English skills of two groups of native Japanese undergraduates. The participants were 47 native speakers of Japanese, all third-year business majors at a private university in Tokyo. Pretest and posttest Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) scores, as well as results from a post-training survey, were used in evaluating the overall effectiveness of the program. Gains in TOEIC scores indicated the BL program incorporating AI speakers improved the students’ overall English skills, particularly listening comprehension. The results suggest the integration of AI, along with social media and 21st-century skills, may be an effective way to improve the English language proficiency of adult L2 learners.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of sentence combining (SC) and sentence decombining (SD) activities on fostering reading comprehension. As a widely used writing activity for enhancing syntactic fluency in English Language Arts (ELA) classes, SC requires learners to combine short sentences into longer and more complex sentences, while SD requires learners to break down a long sentence into the shortest grammatically allowable sentences. Design/methodology/approach This study assessed the effects of SD and SC in comparison with a control group on the improvement of reading comprehension ability among college students learning English as their second language (L2) in the context of a six-week English language learning program. Participants with overall intermediate English language proficiency were randomly assigned to one of three different conditions: SC, SD and control. Also, a subset of the participants was interviewed after the intervention. Findings The results showed that SD was more effective than SC or control condition in enhancing syntactic knowledge and reading comprehension, as measured by a standardized English proficiency test. Data obtained from post-study interviews further suggested that only SD was perceived by the participants as having enhanced their reading comprehension. Originality/value The present study provides a valuable addition to a body of research on sentence manipulation activities in ELA classes. For those L2 learners who have passed a pre-intermediate threshold level, SD appears to be more beneficial than SC in enhancing syntactic knowledge, which, in turn, appears to contribute to better reading comprehension.

The Aviation English Proficiency Exam for the Brazilian Airspace Control System (EPLIS) was developed in compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) language policy regarding the assessment of English language proficiency for air traffic controllers and aeronautical station operators. A high-stakes test by any account, EPLIS was delivered only to in-service air traffic personnel for the first 7 years. In 2014, however, pre-service air traffic controllers started sitting EPLIS in the last semester of their two-year training program. This study aimed at investigating the washback effect of EPLIS on the English teachers’ perceptions in an Air Traffic Control Initial Training Program. Teachers responded to a questionnaire about the influence of EPLIS on different aspects of language teaching and learning. A descriptive statistical analysis was carried out and the results showed that Aviation English teaching experience andknowledge about the exam interact with washback intensity.
