AbstractNanoindentation and dynamic mechanical analysis were used to measure changes in the surface and bulk mechanical properties of Winsor & Newton Yellow Ochre oil paint films following exposure to deionized water, aliphatic mineral spirits (Shellsol D40™), and D5 silicone solvent (decamethylcyclopentasiloxane). Yellow ochre paint films were exposed to the selected solvents by 24-h immersion, and sponge-cleaning. 24-h immersion in deionised water and Shellsol D40 caused measurable changes to bulk and surface mechanical properties. However, there were no measurable changes to the bulk or surface mechanical properties following sponge cleaning.

Abstract The quality of the collected data from a measurement system affects eventual decision making process. Therefore, the reliability of any measurement system is an important factor to be studied. Gauge repeatability and reproducibility (Gauge R&R) is the standard method to evaluate the measurement system and assess the adequacy of variation in the measurement data. Gauge R&R is a statistical tool which evaluates two main characteristics of the measurement system: repeatability and reproducibility. The Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) is a common measurement system for studying the dynamic mechanical properties of viscoelastic materials such as polymers. The newly developed High Frequency Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (HFDMA) is able to directly run the simple shear test at high frequencies without changing the specimen temperature. The complex shear modulus and damping factor of the viscoelastic materials are reported by the HFDMA system. In this study the uni-variable Gauge R&R study based on Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) is done on each measured characteristic of the HFDMA measurement system. The source of variations for each characteristic is distinguished. Then the multivariate Gauge R&R based on the Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) is done and the percentage of multivariate Gauge R&R for the measurement with the multiple variables is reported. The results indicate that the HFDMA measurements are both repeatable and reproducible. Thus, the new HFDMA can be used as a measurement system to measure the mechanical properties of viscoelastic materials at high frequencies.

The storage modulus, loss modulus, loss tangent (tanδ), stress and strain have been determined for painted steel specimens by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) operated in Dual Cantilever mode. Analysis of the composite system enabled the elastic modulus of the paint layer to be calculated and the result can be useful to analyze the mechanical properties of the coil coating. The calculation was found to be very sensitive to the geometry (especially thickness of the substrate and coating) and properties of the substrate and coating, leading to considerable variability in the calculated coating modulus. The DMA method was successful in detecting the glass transition temperature (Tg) as a peak in the tanδ curve. The value of Tg is sensitive to the preparation conditions (e.g. curing temperature) and composition of the paint. The results show that DMA in Dual Cantilever can be useful as a characterization tool for painted steel.

Dynamic mechanical properties of radial curtain plybamboo and its constitution unit-radial bamboo strip were studied using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The results showed: experimental temperature had great effect on dynamic mechanical properties, the shape and alignment of radial bamboo strips were closely related the dynamic mechanical properties of radial curtain plybamboo.

Abstract The mechanical properties of 3D printed polymers parts are process parameter dependent. Defects such as inadvertent voids between deposited rasters and layers lead to weakness in produced parts, which results in inferior mechanical properties as compared to injection molding. An alternative method to change energy absorption and stiffness of a polymer is hybrid additive manufacturing (AM). Hybrid-AM is the use of additive manufacturing with one or more secondary processes that are fully coupled and synergistically affect part quality, functionality, and/or process performance. In this study, fused filament fabrication (FFF) was coupled with layer-by-layer shot peening to study the dynamic mechanical properties of ABS 430 polymer using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). FFF is a heated extrusion process. Shot peening is a mechanical surface treatment that impinges a target with a stochastically dispersed, high velocity stream of beads. Compressive residual stress was imparted to preferential layer intervals during printing to modify the elasticity (stiffness), viscosity, toughness, and glass transition temperature. Viscoelastic and dynamic mechanical properties are important to the performance of polymers in automotive, aerospace, electronics, and medical components. Coupling printing and peening increased the storage and loss moduli as well as the tangent delta. DMA results suggest that preferential layer sequences exist that possess higher elasticity and better absorb energy upon sinusoidal dynamic loading.

Three-dimensional multilayer woven composites are mostly used in high-performance applications due to their excellent out-of-plane mechanical performance. The current research presents an experimental investigation on the mechanical behavior of three-dimensional orthogonal layer-to-layer interlock composites. The glass filament yarn and carbon tows were used as reinforcement in warp and weft directions respectively, whereas epoxy was used as a resin for composite fabrication. Three different types of orthogonal layer to layer interlock namely warp, weft, and bi-directional interlock composites were fabricated and the effect of interlocking pattern on their mechanical performance was evaluated. The evaluation of the mechanical performance was made on the basis of tensile strength, impact strength, flexural strength, and dynamic mechanical analysis of composites in warp and weft directions. It was found that warp and weft interlock composites showed better tensile behavior as compared to bi-directional interlock composite both in the warp and weft directions, due to the presence of less crimp as compared to the bi-directional interlock composite. However, the bi-directional interlock composite exhibited considerably superior impact strength and three-point bending strength as compared to the other structures under investigation. These superior properties of bi-directional interlock composites were achieved by interlocking points in warp and weft directions simultaneously, creating a more compact and isotropic structure. Tan delta values of dynamic mechanical analysis results showed that bi-directional interlock composite displayed the highest capacity of energy dissipation in the warp and weft directions while weft interlock structures displayed highest storage and loss moduli in the warp direction.

A series of castable polyurethane elastomers, based on polytetramethylene glycol as soft segments and toluene diisocyanate, 4, 4’-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, P-phenylene diisocyanate as diisocyanates respectively, were synthesized. The dynamic mechanical analysis method was utilized to determine tan delta property (tanδ). Also the influence of diisocyanates on the dynamic mechanical properties of castable polyurethane elastomers was analyzed. It can be concluded that the P-phenylene diisocyanate system elastomers have the most excellent dynamic mechanical properties.
