The development of "turnkey" cleanrooms is the contemporary task, in demand under the conditions of the growth both of Russian industry and the share of high-tech production, which requires complex solutions from the stage of design development to obtaining certification and post-launching service. DEAXO Company has been developing the advanced technological infrastructure of engineering systems and turnkey cleanroom complexes in Russia for more than 6 years. Within the most innovative, breakthrough fields of development of the national manufacture the company DEAXO creates and realizes exclusive smart solutions from the very idea of the project and the project negotiation till its launch and the further service of the advanced technological production facilities that meet all the requirements of the highest modern quality standards. The concern about professional skills of the employees and improvement of their engineering competences led to the creation of the training center where the new, ready to work in the DEAXO on the Russian market specialists are prepared. CEO of the company DEAXO René Chalmakoff shares the longstanding experience about working on the Russian and international market of semiconductor industry.

The article examines the state of production capacity of Russian industry. It is shown that in spite of certain positive shifts, the rate of technological modernization in recent years has been insufficient for marked progressive changes in the capacity structure and quality. In contrast to the industrial growth after the crisis of 1998 that took place in the presence of significant reserves of capacity, the current level of idle capacity is much lower. The lack of mass input of modern and high-tech industries objectively limits the possibilities of import substitution and economic growth.

Knowledge transfer is a strategy used by high-tech companies to acquire new knowledge and skills. Knowledge can be internally generated or externally sourced. The access to external knowledge is a quick fix, but the risks associated with reliance on external sources are often overlooked. However, not acquiring such knowledge is even riskier. There have been a slew of litigations in the semiconductor industry in recent years. The acquisition and assurance of intangible assets is an important issue. This paper posits that internal R&D should take into consideration the knowledge intensity and capital investment in the industry. This study focuses on the relationship between intangible assets and financial performance. It sourced the 2004 to 2016 financial data of semiconductor companies in Taiwan for panel data modeling and examined case studies for empirical validation. This study found that the higher the R&D intensity (RDI) in the value-added component of human capital, the better the financial performance of the company. RDI has a positive influence on the accumulation of human capital and financial performance metrics, and such influence is deferred. Meanwhile, human capital is a mediating factor in the relationship between RDI and financial performance. RDI is integral to the semiconductor industry’s pursuit of business sustainability.

ABSTRACTWe describe how the development of advanced materials via high-throughput experimentation at Intermolecular® is accelerated using guidance from modelling, machine learning (ML) and other data-driven approaches. Focusing on rapid development of materials for the semiconductor industry at a reasonable cost, we review the strengths and the limitations of data-driven methods. ML applied to the experimental data accelerates the development of record-breaking materials, but needs a supply of physically meaningful descriptors to succeed in a practical setting. Theoretical materials design greatly benefits from the external modelling ecosystems that have arisen over the last decade, enabling a rapid theoretical screening of materials, including additional material layers introduced to improve the performance of the material stack as a whole, “dopants” to stabilize a given phase of a polymorphic material, etc. We discuss the relative importance of different approaches, and note that the success rates for seemingly similar problems can be drastically different. We then discuss the methods that assist experimentation by providing better phase identification. Finally, we compare the strengths of different approaches, using as an example the problem of identifying regions of thermodynamic stability in multicomponent systems.

ABSTRACTIntegration of core electronic functions is progressing at a remarkable rate. The high-end computers that we are using now may be available on a single die by the turn of the century. The effect of this, and other advances on semiconductor assembly and packaging has generated the need for integrated component-level electrical thermal, and mechanical models and simulation methods, as described in the Semiconductor Industry Association national Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors. Although corporate and university research and development in the semiconductor area is intense (there are eight major university-based packaging centers around the world, for example), design/development methodologies that consider the combined and interactive effects of mechanical, thermal and chemical conditions on the reliability and durability of integrated components have been slow to develop. However, such methodologies have been developed for applications of complex composite systems in various other technologies where the operating conditions are similar. The present paper will discuss those developments and the possibility of applying that technology to microelectronic systems.

The literature on East Asia's political economies identifies cohesive state bureaucracy and its effective intervention in the market as the key factors that have enabled the East Asian economic miracle and that differentiate the success of East Asian newly industrializing countries (NICs) from the failure of other developing countries. However, the sharply diverging growth trajectories of the Taiwanese semiconductor and wireless communications industries show that cohesive state bureaucracy and its effective intervention are not the generic trait of the Taiwanese developmental state, repeatedly found across industries and through time. On the contrary, the scope, depth, and coherence of state intervention are a variable rather than a constant. The semiconductor industry had an activist state promoting its growth from its very inception, whereas the wireless communications industry has failed to acquire consistent state support. Explaining the variation of state intervention requires not only an analysis of the state apparatus but also a study of its institutional links to the industry. This article develops an institutional explanation of the Taiwanese state's differing roles in promoting the semiconductor and wireless communications industries, but it differentiates itself from the existing literature of the developmental state and network theories by privileging the role of overseas technologists in influencing the scope, depth, and coherence of state intervention in two industries.

As science and engineering projects are becoming increasingly more complex, sophisticated, comprehensive and multidisciplinary, there is a growing need for systems thinking skills to ensure successful project management. Systems thinking plays a major role in the initiation, effective management, and in facilitating inter-organizational tasks. This research assesses the capacity for engineering systems thinking and its contribution in carrying out a multidisciplinary project. The research also reviews the cognitive process through which systems thinking skill is acquired. The study focused on a group of students who have completed their senior design projects in high-tech industry, while their plans were being integrated into existing larger projects in the respective industrial sites. The systems thinking skill of the students was examined according to a questionnaire for assessing the Capacity for Engineering Systems Thinking (CEST). Statistical analysis shows significant differences in the students capacity for systems thinking at the beginning and end of the work (p<0.001). This research demonstrates that systems thinking skills can be improved through awareness and involvement in multidisciplinary projects.

The article analyzes the use of polymetallic ores’ tailings as a basis for production of composite cements and concrete, having protective properties against gamma and X-rays radiation, as well as high strength and lifetime. The main practically significant result is: the development of scientific and technological production bases of new high-tech type of multicomponent hydraulic binders for concretes – composite cements; the identification of new hydration products in composite cements with addition of polymetallic ores’ tailings; the development of optimal compositions of composite cements for concretes. It is established that the composite cements, that developed by us on the basis of polymetallic ores’ tailings, meet modern requirements i.e. its improve the construction-technical properties of material, have positive effect to the environment situation and allow to reduce the production cost of the final product. Their technology is low metal-intensive and<br />power-consuming. Studies of physical-chemical processes of composite cements structure formation with addition of polymetallic ores’ tailings have been conducted using methods such as chemical, X-ray phase, differential-thermal and electronmicroscopic analysis methods.

Conventional wisdom would predict firms with little financial and technological capabilities to fail. This is especially true for such firms in the high-tech sector during periods of industry downturn. In this paper, we ask how firms experiencing financial and technological gaps can succeed by transforming current challenges into opportunities via governance innovation. We select Hynix and the semiconductor industry for the investigation. Hynix emerged from near bankruptcy become the number two player in the global semiconductor memory market. We find that Hynix’s case requires extending prevailing theory to focus on governance and control. We pinpoint specific factors that contributed to Hynix’s success from the perspective of governance innovation for the theoretical extension and suggest practical implications.
