Diabetic foot (DF) is one of the main complications responsible for the significant deterioration of the quality of life in diabetic patients, particularly, in developing countries. In Peru, 18.9% of diabetic inpatients present DF and 61% develop a foot sepsis. Therefore, the burden of DF is considerable in the country. In this work, we summarize the current scientific evidence of DF in the Peruvian population describing its epidemiology, risk factors, increase of time of hospitalization, bacterial resistance, rate of amputations, and the theoretical medical costs for disease management. According to the reviewed literature, we suggest that more local research should be conducted to better understand the impact of the DF on the Peruvian population.

Diabetes is a common chronic disease that is considered as one of the fastest-growing health problems in the world. Adherence to medications could be an important factor in reducing these complications and improving the quality of life. The purpose of this research was to assess the impact of treatment adherence on health-related quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes. A multicenter cross-sectional study was carried out among 368 diabetes patients. General Medication Adherence Scale was used to assess the adherence level and EuroQol-5D to assess the quality of life. The results show that 19%, 21%, and 23% of patients had maintained low medication adherence due to patient’s intentional or unintentional behavior due to additional diseases or pills burden and due to financial constraints, respectively. Overall, 43% (n=162) participants had maintained high medication adherence, and 37% (n=138) had maintained low medication adherence to antidiabetic drugs. Nearly one-third (31%) of patients with high overall adherence had perfect health state in comparison with 4% among patients with low adherence. Further, the lower proportion (21%) of patients with high overall adherence had perfect health state in comparison with that among patients with low adherence (34%). In addition to the overall adherence, the association was statistically significant for the domains related to non-adherence due to the patient’s intentional or unintentional behavior (p-value 0.001) and non-adherence due to additional diseases or pills burden (p-value 0.001) after taking into account of socio-demographic and clinical characteristics. In conclusion, the findings suggest that the policymakers should establish an intervention to improve adherence to diabetic treatment, and thus improve the quality of life for the type 2 diabetic patients.

Purpose This study aims to design to assess the traditional, complementary and alternate medicine (TCAM) usage and its association with the quality of life (QOL) of Type 2 diabetic patients in a tertiary hospital (Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia) in Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach A total of 300 respondents included in this study were divided into the following two major categories: TCAM (34.33% of respondents) and non-TCAM users (65.67% of the respondents), respectively. The mean ages of the respondents were 59.3 ± 10.2 for the TCAM users and 57.7 ± 12.0 for the non-TCAM users. Findings A greater percentage of non-TCAM users reported poor control of diabetes (14.7%) and blood glucose (55.8%) compared with the TCAM users (9.7% and 48.5%, respectively). Further, the diabetic patients on TCAM reported lower rates of coma, stroke and kidney problems but higher rates of diabetic foot ulcers, heart diseases and retinopathy than the non-TCAM users. Additionally, the diabetic patients with TCAM usage had a significantly better physical (p = 0.02) and overall (p = 0.03) qualities of life compared to the non-TCAM users. However, psychological, social and environmental health did not show any significant difference. Originality/value The prevalence of TCAM usage among diabetic patients was lower than in other comparable studies. Diabetic patients on TCAM reported lower rates of coma, stroke and kidney problems but higher rates of diabetic foot ulcers, heart diseases and retinopathy than the non-TCAM users. Further, diabetes patients on TCAM reported better QOL compared to non-TCAM users especially in terms of physical health.

Aim:  To  identify  scientific  evidence  about  families  of  children  with sickle  cell  disease.  Method:  An  integrative  review  of  the  search  used the  following descriptors:  anemia  sickle  cell;  hemoglobin  SC  disease;  hemoglobin sickle;  family; family  relations;  and,  child.  The  search  was  carried  out  for  literature  in  Portuguese, English,  and  Spanish.  The  search  used  databases  such  as  MEDLINE,  LILACS,  CINAHL, and PubMed, and looked for articles published between January 2005 and January 2015. Results:   There   were   16   articles   selected  that   originated  the   following  thematic categories: the impact of sickle cell disease on the family, psychosocial effects on family dynamics,  child's  quality  of  life,  and  family  and  social  support/support  networks. Discussion:  The  studies  report  that  the  family  remains  the  main  provider  of  care  for children  with  sickle  cell  disease,  and  that  families  faces  challenges  in  achieving comprehensive care and fighting for their children’s quality of life. C onclusion: This evidence  will  provide  support  for  multi-professional  teams  in the  construction  of continuous care for the families of children who are sickle cell patients.

Abstract Background Primary CNS tumors constitute a heterogeneous group of neoplasms that share a considerable morbidity and mortality rate. To help control tumor growth and clinical outcomes (overall survival, progression-free survival, quality of life) symptoms, patients often resort to alternative therapies, including the use of cannabis. Despite rapidly growing popularity, cannabis and its impact on patients with primary malignant CNS tumors is understudied. Methods To shed light on the lack of scientific evidence in this field, in November 2018 we conducted a search and examination of cannabis in neuro-oncology in major journal databases and bibliographies of selected articles, and through abstracts of annual meetings using prespecified criteria in line with the Cochrane Collaboration guidelines. Results We identified 45 publications, of which 9 were selected. Five studies were included. Publication dates ranged from 2004 to 2018 and included varying histologies of primary brain tumors. The average survival at 1 year was 56.09% (95% CI: 48.28-63.9). There was no difference in risk ratio (RR) for death at 1 year between groups (RR: 1.069 [95% CI: 0.139-8.25]). We found strong evidence of heterogeneity (Q = 74.0%; P = .021). We found no statistical evidence of publication bias (P = .117; SD = 1.91). Conclusions There was limited moderate-quality evidence that supports the use of cannabinoids as adjuvant to the standard of care in the treatment of brain and CNS tumors. There was very low-quality evidence suggesting that cannabinoids were associated with adult-onset gliomas. Further prospective clinical trials are necessary to adequately evaluate the impact of cannabinoids on CNS tumors, specifically on survival and quality of life.

Abstract Background Diabetic limb ulcers are highly prevalent and contribute to a significant increase in cost for the treatment of these patients in health services. However, healing of these wounds is a major health problem and may even lead to amputation. The primary aim of the current study is to evaluate the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in facilitating the healing of diabetic foot ulcers, in addition to secondarily evaluating whether it reduces the number of amputations and improves the quality of life in these patients. Methods A non-blind randomized clinical study will be conducted in the city of Imperatriz, Maranhão state, Brazil, from 2019 to 2020, in diabetic patients with chronic foot ulcers (classified as Wagner grades 2, 3 and 4, persisting for more than 1 month). The outpatient follow-up for diabetic foot patients will be done at the Unified Health System, with a sample size of 120 patients (the randomization allocation will be 1:1, being 60 patients for each arm). Half of the patients will receive standard treatment, i.e. dressings, debridement, antibiotics and load relief, along with HBOT (HBOT group), and the other half will receive only standard treatment (control group). The patients of the HBOT group will be evaluated upon admission, after 10, 20, 30 and 35 HBOT sessions, and after 6 months and 1 year. The patients of the control group will also be evaluated at equivalent periods (upon admission, after 2, 4, 6 and 7 weeks, 6 months and 1 year). The SF-36 quality of life questionnaire will be filled upon admission and after 3 months of follow-up in both groups. The primary and secondary endpoints will be assessed with 1 year of follow-up. Discussion Diabetic foot ulcers are a highly prevalent complication of diabetes with serious consequences. A study to assess the efficacy of HBOT in healing the ulcers and reducing the rate of amputations in diabetic patients is justified, which will eventually aid in the development of guidelines for treating these ulcers. Background: Diabetics are more prone to periodontal diseases leading to poor oral function affecting their quality of life. The objective of the study was to assess the impact of periodontal health on the quality of life among diabetics using the short version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP -14). Methods: It was a descriptive cross-sectional study. Data was collected using translated and validated Nepalese version of OHIP-14 questionnaire and clinical examination for periodontal status (Community Periodontal Index and Loss of Attachment index) was done using mouth mirror and World Health Organization probe under natural light. Data was entered and analyzed using SPSS version 11.5. Mann- Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare OHIP-14 scores between genders and periodontal status respectively. Statistical significance was established at p<0.05. Results: One hundred and forty-five subjects with confirmed diabetes participated in the study. Overall, 41% were male participants were as 59% were females. Majority of the participants had calculus with CPI score 1 (n=131, 90.3%) and another majority had loss of attachment 3-5 mm with LOA score 1 (n=55, 37.9%). There was no significant difference in mean scores between two genders (p=0.231). The OHIP scores among participants with highest CPI and LOA scores had statistically significant difference (p=0.011 and p=0.006 respectively). Conclusions: Periodontal status was poor among diabetics with significant impact on their oral health related quality of life. Glycemic control along with periodontal maintenance is required to enhance quality of life among such patients. This might be possible with comprehensive medical approach for diabetic patients.
