The article examines the role and peculiarities of the internet in Thailand as well as its influence on the development of democracy in the country. At present, information technology is becoming an essential communication tool and the internet plays an important role in political communication. The author uses comparative political method to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of using the internet as a communication instrument in democratic society. Also, the article focuses on the function of the internet as an information transmission channel. The analysis results show that the main advantage of using the internet as a political communication tool is low cost of information distribution as well as allround access to various information sources. This encourages citizens to participate in political activities of the state. On the other hand, the mass distribution of the internet as the main source of information has its disadvantages: unreliability of data, wide access to false information and discordance of opinions. In Thailand, citizens do not have free access to the Internet, so it is doubtful that it will have a great impact on the development of democracy in the country.

The present study has an exploratory nature and aims to analyze the perception of managers on the efficiency, access importance, use as a communication tool, benefits and difficulties of Internet use in Brazilian hotels and also its effects according to the facilities rank and property size plus managers’ age and experience time. It has been used as a questionnaire to collect data from the managers of 35 hotels in the city of Natal, RN, Brazil. By using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey test, results showed that there is almost no significant difference on the perception of managers on the impact of Internet use in hotels. However, those variables that were different show that for younger and less experienced managers and luxurious hotels with more than 50 rooms, there is a more favorable perception on the impacts of the Internet.

Using data from surveys of automobile buyers collected in 1990 and 2000 in a natural experiment setting, the authors study the determinants of use of the Internet as a source of information on automobiles, its impact on the use of other sources, and its impact on total search effort. The results indicate that the Internet draws attention in approximately the same proportion from other sources. The results also show that those who use the Internet to search for automobiles are younger and more educated and search more in general. However, the analysis also indicates that they would have searched even more if the Internet had not been present.

The rapid spread of Internet communication nowadays has changed the conditions under which political communication takes place, although its purpose remains the same – influence for the sake of power. The article analyzes and summarizes the directions and trends in the study of political discourse, which is the context of political utterance, utterance itself and its perception. It is noted that the Internet has proved to be a new effective way of informing, persuading, arguing and manipulating the mass consciousness, accelerating the process of providing information and changing its format, including for manipulative purposes. It is revealed that the Internet has formed new genres and forms of political communication, providing an opportunity to get feedback from the political message and creating the appearance of direct communication between politicians and the public. The study of political discourse by researchers today is multi-vector: in a purely linguistic direction (the language of political statements); in linguistic and pragmatic direction (how the functions of political discourse are realized); anthropocentric (political personality); sociolinguistic (society’s reaction to the political activities of the subjects) and others. As the field of politics is constantly changing, responding to global, socio-political, economic circumstances, its analysis, including by linguists, provides and will always provide new material for further research.

Abstract This chapter discusses reading on screen and in print, as the emergence of digital age has transformed our reading and attention. Digital reading reshapes the concept of reading with the use of various forms of social media that are full of acronyms and emoticons or emoji. Advantages and disadvantages of reading on screen and in print are reviewed. The effects of digitally-mediated text on information processing and reading comprehension are also discussed. Although reading online has merits, such as convenience, low cost, and easy accessibility, readers are likely to scan through an F-shaped gaze pattern. The use of digital media may have a significant influence on brain networks due to the brain’s adaptability and accommodating abilities. Digital text that includes more images and visual aids than hardcopy text may lead to more balanced brain functions. This may have implications for reduced script relativity in the future.

Abstract Background To tell children that they are diagnosed with cancer is challenging for any healthcare professional and family. Pictures books are one of the communication tools for talking with children about severe diseases. However, little research is available about the contents and appropriateness of picture books about cancer for children. Methods This study aimed to examine the contents of children's picture books about cancer and explore the advantages and disadvantages of using picture books to communicate with children about cancer. We searched the picture books about cancer written for children aged under ten years old on the Amazon.com Web site on 5 July 2019 and hand-searched on the cancer-related institutes' Web site. We extracted the texts of relevant picture books and conducted a contents analysis of them. Two researchers independently coded the patterns and contents and calculated the agreement between the codings of two researchers using Cohen's kappa coefficient. Results We identified 2,555 picture books and included 30 of them. We identified three main contents, (a) cancer-related knowledge, (b) impacts of cancer, and (c) dealing with cancer. Cancer-related knowledge refers to the information about what is going on and what children have to do. Impacts of cancer refer to the impact of having a child with cancer. Dealing with cancer relates to the actions to reduce or minimize stressful events that had been described. These contents were written with simple words and illustrations. Some of them included the essential contents, which might be misunderstood by children. Conclusions Picture books use plain language with illustrations and might be helpful for children to understand about cancer. However, as these books do not include all contents, it is necessary to select and use multiple books depending on the content which is wanted to tell the child. Moreover, there was no picture book which was developed based on children's information needs and validated. Further research should evaluate the impacts of these books as a communication tool when talking with children diagnosed with cancer.

The impact of the Internet on political participation has been a debated issue in recent decades. Internet activities have been criticized for being slacktivism, where the real life impact of the activities is limited; the main effect is to enhance the feel-good factor for the participants. This article examines whether this accusation is valid. It does so by examining two aspects of Internet campaigns: Whether they are effective in affecting real life political decisions, and whether Internet activism substitutes traditional forms of off-line participation. Although it is not possible to determine a consistent impact of Internet campaigns on real-life decisions, there is no evidence of the substitution thesis. If anything, the Internet has a positive impact on off-line mobilization. Accordingly, there is little evidence to support the accusation of Internet campaigns being slacktivism. It is at worst harmless fun and can at best help invigorate citizens.
