The objective of this work was to evaluate aluminum tolerance of five genotypes of Urochloa decumbens (D24, CD24-2, CD24-27, CD24-45 e D62) and five genotypes of Urochloa ruziziensis (R30, R44, R46, R50 and R125) in hydroponic system. Uniform tillers were collected from these genotypes and transferred to two solutions: solution 1 (200 μM CaCl2, pH 4.2) and solution 2 (200 μM CaCl2 + 200 μM AlCl3, pH 4.2). Twenty-one days later, the roots of the plants were separated, stained and digitalized for analysis of the length and diameter of the main root. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design, in factorial (genotypes × doses) with three replications. A significant interaction occurred between genotype and dose for length and width of the main root, and the results presented in average, a significant difference for most genotypes. The means of main root length in the absence and presence of aluminum were not significant for D62 (U. decumbens cv. Basilisk), CD24-45 and R46. Means were not significant for the diameter of the main root for CD24-2, CD24-27 and D62. Genotype D62 was the only one classified as tolerant to aluminum and R50 the only one classified as sensitive. Most evaluated genotypes showed medium to low tolerance. This classification was based on confidence intervals (IC 99%) for the mean of the relative tolerance indices estimated for length and diameter of the main root. These results can be used in the choice of progenitors aiming at developing segregating populations for studies of inheritance and mapping of genes and/or loci related to aluminum tolerance in Urochloa.

An eight-week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of substituting maize with indomie waste meal on the haematology and serum biochemical indices of 90-dayold Anak 2000 broiler chickens. Three experimental broiler starter and finisher diets were formulated with diet 1 serving as control containing 0% Indomie waste meal (IWM), while diets 2 and 3 contained IWM at 50 and 100% inclusion levels for maize. The chicks were randomly assigned to the three treatment diets (1, 2 and 3) in a completely randomized design and each treatment group contained three replicates with ten chickens per replicate. The result on the haematological indices revealed that MCV values were significantly influenced (p<0.05) by the treatment diets with highest value of (135.50±0.21fl) among birds fed 50% IWM. MCH also significantly varied(p<0.05) among birds fed the treatment diets with highest (42.77±0.31pg) recorded among birds maintained on the control diet. Serum biochemical indices revealed that phosphorus value were significantly higher (p<0.05) in birds fed the control diet with the mean value of 3.63±0.09mg/100ml. Total cholesterol was significantly higher (p<0.05) in birds fed 100% IWM. The overall results from this study conclusively suggest that the inclusion of indomie waste meal in the diet of broilers up to 100% did not have any detrimental effect on the blood profile of the birds. But precaution had to be taken in the incorporation of IWM at this level because of the increase effect on the cholesterol level of the blood.Mr. Omoikhoje, B. (Laboratory Technologist)

Aim: The present study was aimed to find out the robust hybrid during summer season under temperate climatic conditions. Study Design: Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Place and Duration of Study: College of Temperate Sericulture (CoTS) Mirgund, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, of Kashmir (SKUAST-K), in the year 2014. Methodology: The disease free layings (dfl’s) of the selected hybrids viz., SK31× SK13, SK6 × SK13 and CSR18× CSR19 were obtained from the Germplasm Bank maintained at College of Temperate Sericulture (CoTS) Mirgund, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, of Kashmir (SKUAST-K). Thesedfl’s were incubated, brushed and reared up to 3rd instar en masse following the standard rearing procedure. Just after 3rdmoult, 3 replications of 100 larvae in each treatment were maintained. Cocoon and post cocoon parameters viz, pupation rate, single cocoon weight, single shell weight, shell ratio, raw silk, denier and leaf cocoon ratio were calculated and recorded during the course of experimentation. Results: No significant difference was recorded in pupation rate among the hybrids. H1 hybrid was found significantly superior over H2 and H3 for single cocoon and shell weight with mean value as 1.957 and 0.406 respectively. On the other hand influence of hybrids over shell ratio remained non significant. The performance of silkworm hybrids with respect to raw silk was recorded higher in H1 (17.98%) followed by H2 (17.96%) and H3 (17.93%), while the fine denier of 2.86 d was reported in H3 followed by H1 (2.94d) and H2 (3.01d). Leaf cocoon ratio was recorded lower in H1with mean value as 15.16 /100 dfl’s. Conclusion: Significant differences among the hybrids were observed, but no hybrid performed better in all traits studied, however in maximum traits SK31× SK13, seems to be superior to the other two studied hybrids.
