Abstract The objective of this paper is to analyze the influence of a negative semantics of garbage in the social recognition and professional identity of the members of a separation cooperative in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The data was collected through participant observation and 32 interviews with cooperative workers and buyers and managers. We understand the association of the work with garbage to the idea of social degradation as a negative semantic association with garbage (Eigenheer, 2003; Magera, 2003; Portilho, 1997). The members of this separation cooperative do not interact with the passers-by (society in general) during their work. This absence of social interaction diminishes the impact of the negative semantics of garbage among them. Among the workers there is a low self-esteem and no official consideration of their job as a profession. This condition appears to be influenced by a lack of social recognition, low salaries and an asymmetry of information. Notwithstanding, we were able to identify a strong structure within the cooperative and the low impact of the negative semantics of garbage among the members. This paper concludes that the absence of social recognition and the lack of professional identity of these members is not a consequence of negative semantics (Carmo, 2009a e 2009b), but a result of the difficulty in understandinf the market logic that results from their work. Keywords: classifiers, recyclers, garbage, recyclables, cooperative.

The city of Rio de Janeiro underwent profound changes between 1870 and the early 20th century. Its population grew dramatically, attracting migrants not only from abroad but also from other regions of Brazil. It also expanded significantly in size, as the construction of trolley and railway lines and the introduction of real estate capital powered the occupation of new areas. Meanwhile, urban reforms aimed at modernization transformed the social ways in which urban space was used. During this period, Rio de Janeiro went from being the capital of the Brazilian Empire to being the capital of the Brazilian Republic. It nevertheless maintained its position as the cultural, political-administrative, commercial, and financial center of the country. Against this backdrop of change, the city was an important arena for the political struggles that marked the period, including demonstrations in favor of abolition and the republic. Rio de Janeiro’s citizens were not inert during this period of transformation, and they found various ways to take action and fight for what they understood to be their rights. Protests, demands, petitions, and a vibrant life organized around social and political associations are examples of the broad repertoire used by the city’s inhabitants to gain a voice in municipal affairs. Citizens’ use of public demands and petitions as a channel to communicate with the authorities, and especially with city officials, shows that while they did not necessarily shun formal politics, they understood politics to be a sphere for dialogue and dispute. The sociocultural history of Rio de Janeiro during this period was therefore built precisely through confrontations and negotiations in which the common people played an active role.

Abstract Young people constitute more than half of global refugee populations, yet there is limited research into the impact of displacement on transitions into adult life. With the average period of protracted displacement extending beyond 20 years, insight is needed into how the experience of being a refugee shapes the expectations and lives of young people. This article examines the effects of weak and restricted labour markets on the transitions of young refugees into adulthood. Drawing from research undertaken with displaced children and youth in Uganda and Jordan, the article explores how a lack of work opportunities affects individual ability to achieve financial independence and, more widely, to obtain the social recognition associated with adulthood. The research finds how a dependence on precarious work and the effects of legal restrictions on employment curtail transitions to adulthood, highlighting the importance of national and humanitarian policy support to help young refugees establish stable livelihoods.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the image of Brazil and Rio de Janeiro as a blended tourism destination (TD) image, by examining the categories of the image, and whether it is positive or negative and cognitive or affective. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative approach was employed to verify the relations between the image of Brazil and Rio de Janeiro by visit, location, categories and subcategories and dimensions. Data were collected online from a “snowball” sample and were analyzed applying non-parametric hypothesis testing. Statistical analysis was performed with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software version 25.0 for Windows. Findings Results reveal that respondents share the same image of the city of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, a conclusion that is partially confirmed by statistical findings. The quantitative results also showed that the image is positive and “natural attractions” and “unique city attractions” are, respectively, the most mentioned subcategory and category. Cognitive attributes of the image have been more mentioned than affective ones. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the image of Brazil and Rio de Janeiro as a blended TD image has never been explored before, however, it has been assumed as being the same.

AbstractCities develop around industry, markets and transport links. Dublin in the nineteenth century was similar, but additionally the north-west of the city developed around the expansion of a complex of institutional buildings for the reception, confinement and welfare of the poor and sick. This article argues that these institutions were implicit in the development of the modern city in the same way as industry and commerce. The physical development of the buildings altered and defined both the streetscape and, over time, the social identities and historical communities in the locale, in the same way that industrial development defined urban areas.

This study used Altmetric analysis to rank neurological articles and assessed the implications in relation to the social recognition of neurology and neurological disorders. An Altmetric Explorer search was conducted on 25 May 2018 for articles published in the 91 journals included in the 2015 InCites™ Journal Citation Report®. We identified and analyzed the 100 articles with the highest Altmetric Attention Scores (AASs). A major proportion of the social impact (high AASs) was focused on neurodegenerative disorders such as dementia and neurodegenerative disorders. About half of the high-ranking articles provided academic information such as disease information (29 articles, 29%), new or advanced treatments (17%), and side effects of treatment (8%). The journal with largest number of top 100 articles was the New England Journal of Medicine (29 articles). Some of the data gathered via altmetrics can change a field of study, the public’s health, or a larger society. This is the first report on the impact of academic articles in neurological disorder on the general public living in our altered information society.

A city high-rise building of the environmental balance, and its prominent position in the image and the place has a special symbol. However, high-rise buildings developed to reduce the symbolic value that it has attributed to the relevant system of architectural forms. Because of its height and volume, a high-rise building than in the top or bottom is likely in terms of physical environment on the social environment and the impact is much greater. Disturb the existing high-rise buildings in varying degrees between the various functions of the city, increasing the city high-rise buildings in the moment, how to properly control the rapid of high-rise buildings in order to maintain a sustainable ecosystem, is a question worth considering.
