Tricholoma anatolicum H.H. Doğan & Intini is known as the most prized mushroom species in Feke region of Turkey. This mushroom species is collected from Cedar (Cedrus libani) forests and therefore is named as Cedar mushroom in this region. It is collected and consumed by local collectors and also exported to Far East countries such as Japan by exporting companies. Therefore, it is important to investigate the nutritional and medical importance of this species. The aim of this study is to reveal the antioxidant activity of methanol extract in different concentrations (1, 2 and 4 mg/mL) of T. anatolicum H.H. Doğan & Intini collected from Feke district of Adana province of Turkey in 2015. In this study, it was determined that total phenolic content of this mushroom was 56 mg/kg. 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), nitric oxide (NO) and reducing power (RP) activities given in trolox (µM) and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) given in FeSO4 (µM) were found as 449, 180, 337 and 2 at the highest concentration (4 mg/mL), respectively. As a result, it could be suggested that methanol extract of T. anatolicum H.H. Doğan & Intini has significantly antioxidant activity.

Background: Consumption of traditional herbal beverages has been generally increased in the last decades, Terebinth coffee, known as ‘‘menengic coffee’’ in Turkish, is one of the most consumed herbal coffees in Turkey, turpentine tree is one of the components of the Mediterranean bush, particularly in Algeria, known as Betoum el Kiffan is largely used as food and in traditional medicine. Aims: In this study, Total phenol, flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity of three extracts of Pistacia trebinthus fruit growing in Algeria was measured using radical scavenging activity tests and metal-related tests including, ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). The chemical composition profile of the fruits and the coffee brands was identified by thin-layer chromatography, the effects of roasting method of this fruit was rivaled also. Materials and Methods: The total phenolic content of the extracts was determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. All extracts of the terebinth fruits and coffee brands displayed a high DPPH scavenging effect. Results: The results of the ferric-reducing antioxidant power show that the reduction capacity is proportional to the increase in the concentration of the samples. All the extracts of the plant exhibit antioxidant activities lower than those of the reference product besides the infusion extract of the P. terebinthus roasted coffee, which is the most active with an optical density of 1.68 nm at a concentration of 400 μg/mL. The chromatography results show that the various extracts of Pistacia terebinthus fruit carry a large number of polyphenols, in particular the carboxylic acids phenols. Conclusions: The plant can be considered as a coffee substitute and opens up promising avenues for the food and pharmaceutical industry in Algeria. Abstract. Chumroenphat T, Saensouk S, Saensouk P. 2021. Chemical composition and antioxidant activity of three species of Cornukaempferia in Thailand. Biodiversitas 22: 4036-4044. Genus Cornukaempferia (Zingiberaceae) were used as medicinal plants in Thailand. Cornukaempferia has never been reported the chemical compounds and antioxidant activity before. This study was designed to identify the chemical composition and antioxidant activities in root, rhizome, stem, and leaves of Cornukaempferia aurantiflora, C. larsenii, and C. longipetiolata. DPPH scavenging activity and Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays assessed the chemical composition and antioxidant activity. The results showed that total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) found different plant parts obtained in this study were in the order of root>rhizomes>leaves>?stems. The C. aurantiflora had a high TPC of 416.39 mg GAE/g dry weight, while individual phenolics, such as vanillic acid at 256.90 mg/g dry weight, showed high contents in the leaf part. For C. larsenii,  TFC and individual flavonoids, such as catechin, have high 62.52 and 56.47 mg/100g dry weight values in the roots, respectively. The antioxidant activities in different species of different plant parts (DPPH: root>leaves?> rhizomes?>?stems; FRAP: leaves?>root>?rhizomes?>?stems). The genus Cornukaempferia is a rich source of bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity. Therefore, the genus Cornukaempferia will be used as medicine and food to produce products with health benefits in the future.

Determination of total phenolate and antioxidant activity of red leaf extract (Erythrina fusca Lour) was done by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. This study aims to determine the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of hexane, ethyl acetate and ethanol extract. The extracts were prepared using a non-polar-maseration method with hexane, ethyl acetate and ethanol solvents. The results showed total phenolic concentration using the Folin-Ciocalteu method were 0.412 g/100 g in the hexane extract, 1.782 g/100 g in the ethyl acetate extract and 5.455 g/100 g in the ethanol extract. Antioxidant activity conducted by using FRAP method (Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power) were obtained 0,682 mmol Fe (II)/100 g at hexane extract, 5,186 mmol Fe (II)/100 g at ethyl acetate extract and 10,591 mmol Fe (II)/100 g on the ethanol extract. The antioxidant activity of gallic acid as standard was 44.356 g mmol Fe (II)/100g.

This study was conducted to determine the pH, protein concentration, mineral, phenolic, flavonoid, and organic acid contents, as well as the antioxidant activity of three batches of fruit jiaosu (F1B3, F1B4, and F1B5). The jiaosu was prepared by mixing ten types of fresh fruits, raw honey, and water (3:1:10, w/w/w), and fermented at room temperature for six months. All fruit jiaosu had low pH (2.96–3.69), and the protein concentration was ranged from 8.45 to 16.2 µg/mL. Potassium (605.0–657.2 mg/L) was found to be the most abundant mineral in all the samples, followed by magnesium, calcium, and sodium. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents were 183.1–210.5 µg gallic acid equivalent/mL and 45.2–53.8 µg quercetin equivalent/mL, respectively. Acetic acid was the major organic acid in the F1B4 and F1B5 samples (6.58 g/L and 20.7 g/L, respectively) while the F1B3 sample contained the highest amount of lactic acid (12.1 g/L). Ascorbic and citric acids were present in small amounts in all samples. All the samples showed stronger scavenging activity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radicals (half-maximum inhibitory concentration, IC50: 13.6–16.8% v/v) than against hydrogen peroxide (IC50: 47.2–50.6% v/ v). The ferric reducing antioxidant power and oxygen radical absorbance capacity values for the samples were 14.9–20.9 µg ascorbic acid equivalent/mL and 23.9–25.4 mg Trolox equivalent/mL, respectively. The results indicated that the fruit jiaosu is a complex acidic solution containing proteins, minerals, phenolic compounds, and organic acids with antioxidant activities. Natural fermentation may cause variations in the organic acid content of the fruit jiaosu.

Leafy vegetables are an excellent source of bioactive factors, traditionally used as important medical ingredients. Recently, some leafy vegetables are domesticated without the use of fertilizer, as well as the assessment of the effect of fertilizer on their nutritional value. This study aims at testing the effect of three mineral and organic fertilizers (Cowpat, NPK and NPK + cowpat) on three traditional leafy vegetables: Ceratotheca sesamoïdes, Sesamum radiatum and Justicia tenella. Their antioxidant activities were assessed at different harvesting times varying from six (6) to fourteen (14) Weeks After Transplantation (WAT) using three in vitro methods: Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 2,2’-Azinobis3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6- sulfonic acid (ABTS) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazil (DPPH). The FRAP, DPPH, ABTS assays were consistent and positively correlated (p < 0.001). Total antioxidant activities of leafy vegetables depended on species, harvesting time and methods. They ranged from 32.0 to 45.7 µmol Fe/g DW (for FRAP), with non fertilized J. tenella cut at 12 WAT giving the highest antioxidant activity. Percentage of inhibition using DPPH assay ranged from 11.4 to 87.2 % and showed that J. tenella fertilized with NPK and cowpat, and harvested at 9 WAT had the highest antioxidant activity. Regarding ABTS, the range of 17.6 to 28.9 µmol TE/g DW was recorded, and the leaves of C. sesamoïdes harvested at 10 WAT and fertilized with cowpat showed the highest level. Compared to other species, those studied here may best contribute to improve human health related to degenerative diseases. Moreover, significant and positive correlations were observed between the total phenolic compounds content and antioxidant activities of leaves regardless the methods used. The positive and significant correlations between the three assays (FRAP, DPPH, ABTS) allow to suggest the use of only anyone of them to check factors in the study. This paper highlights the potential of antioxidant capability of the leafy vegetables even fertilized.

Antioxidant plays an important role in inhibiting and scavenging radicals, thus providing protection for human against infection and degenerative diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the solvent on the extraction of the antioxidant compounds from Careya arborea (CA) Roxb. The leaves of CA were extracted by using water, ethanol, methanol, and chloroform. The total phenolic content of the extracts was determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and their antioxidant activity was measured using 2, 2-diphenyl-1 picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) methods. The antioxidant activities of the extracts for DPPH and FRAP were in the order: water > methanol > ethanol > chloroform extract. According to the results, water is the most suitable solvent for extraction of active substances with antioxidant activities.

This study evaluated the antioxidant activity as well as bioflavonoid content of the methanol and ethanol-water extracts of the fresh and dried leaves ofTetracarpidium conophorum. Antioxidant activity was determined by spectrophotometric methods using DPPH free radical, nitric oxide radical inhibition and ferric reducing antioxidant power assays. In addition, total phenolics, flavonoids and proanthocyanidin content were also determined. The ethanol: water extract of the dried leaves had the highest antioxidant activity with a 50% inhibition of DPPH at a concentration of 0.017 mg/mL compared to the standards, Vitamin C and Vitamin E with inhibition of 0.019 and 0.011 mg/mL, respectively. This extract also showed nitric oxide radical inhibition activity comparable to that of rutin, 54.45% and 55.03% for extract and rutin, respectively, at 0.1 mg/mL. Ferric reducing power was also comparable to that of ascorbic acid (281 and 287 μM Fe (11)/g, resp.) at a concentration of 1 mg/mL. The methanol extract of both the dried and the fresh leaves had higher phenolic, flavonoids and proanthocyanidin content than the ethanol : water extract. The study reveals thatT. conophorumcan be an interesting source of antioxidants with their potential use in different fields namely food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Antioxidant activity (AOA) in fruits of Sambucus nigra and several new elderberry interspecific hybrids involving S. javanica (JA), S. nigra subsp. nigra (NI), S. nigra subsp. nigra ‘Black Beauty’ (BB), S. nigra subsp. cerulea (CER) and S. racemosa (S. racemosa subsp. racemosa (RAC), S. racemosa subsp. racemosa var. miquelii (MIQ), S. racemosa subsp. tigranii (TIG), S. racemosa subsp. kamtschatica—coreana (KOR) at five maturity stages were investigated by applying DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS (2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)), FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) and ORAC (oxygen radical absorption capacity) assays. The aim of the study was to compare different assays for estimating AOA in elderberries, to plan the appropriate harvest time and to determine whether the most promising genotypes could be predicted in advance. All assays used showed that AOA increased significantly during maturation. All assays were significantly correlated with each other and could be reliably used for the AOA determination of elderberries. In fully mature berries, significant correlations were also found between total phenolic (TP) content and AOA by all assays, but no significant correlations were found between total ascorbic acid (TAA) content and AOA by all assays. At the fully mature stage, (the most appropriate stage for harvesting), berries of (JA × NI) × BB and (JA × NI) × MIQ were found to be superior in AOA and TP content. Genotypes with higher/lower AOA and TP content could not be predicted in advance, while TAA showed the opposite.

AbstractWine samples (Grüner Veltliner (GV) and Zweigelt (ZW) from four different geographical regions of Austria and Czech Republic) were analyzed to determine their total phenolic content (TPC) by applying the Folin-Ciocalteau method, total antioxidant activity (TAA) by FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) and DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl) assays, and to identify and quantify eleven phenolic compounds using a HPLC/UV-VIS method.
