Indonesia has a high diversity of potential medicinal plants, which are the second-largest number of indigenous medicinal plants in the world. Syzygium polyanthum, known as Indonesian Bay Leaf or Salam, easily found, widely used in Indonesia as a spice in cooking and traditional medicine. Salam contains secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, essential oils, sesquiterpenes, triterpenes, phenols, steroids, and saponins. Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis are the main bacteria that cause commensal infection and the most common nosocomial infections. This study aims to know the antibacterial activity of the Salam ethanolic extract against Staphylococcus aureusand Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria. Salam leaves were extracted by 70% ethanol in the maceration method. Antibacterial activity was conducted by the disk diffusion method. The extract exhibits moderate activity (10.51±0.3 mm) at 75% of concentration and low activity (3.69±0.4 mm) at 100% of concentration against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis respectively. The test showed that salam leaves extract had antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis.

Abstract-Medicinal plants represent an essential source of drugs and have played an important role in healthcaresystem.PyracanthacrenulataandZanthoxylum armatumhave been used as traditional medicine. The main aim of the study was to find the antibacterial activity of the selected plants against bacterialspecies:E.coliandPseudomonasaeruginosa. The solvents used for plant extraction were hexane, chloroform, ethanol and aqueous. The in vitro antimicrobial activity was performed by Agar disk diffusion method. The hexane and aqueous extracts showed moderate activity whereas theethanolicextractsshowedasignificantantibacterial activity. In the study Tetracycline was used as standard. The combined ethanolic extract of both the selected plant showed the synergistic effect on the bacterial strain tested. This leads to the conclusion that the combined effect can have possible application in the development of products as antimicrobial.

Infection is one of the main causes of world health problems, especially in developing countries like Indonesia, one of which is an acute respiratory infection caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. Therapeutics are used for the treatment of infections today with antibiotics. However, there are many cases of bacterial resistance to antibiotics that need to develop alternatives derived from plants. One of the plants that have antibacterial activity is the leaves of Waru Gunung (Hibiscus macrophyllus). The purpose of this study was to determine whether the ethanolic extract of H. macrophyllus leaves and their fractions have antibacterial activity against S. aureus. The method used in this antibacterial activity test is the disk diffusion method with a test concentration of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%. The results of this study indicate that all test samples have antibacterial activity except in the water fraction. The highest antibacterial activity was obtained in the ethyl acetate fraction which attracted semipolar compounds in the ethanolic extract of H. macrophyllus leaves. The antibacterial activity of the test samples in sequence from high to low includes ethyl acetate fraction, ethanolic extract, n-hexane fraction, and water fraction.

Skin infections most often found in developing countries, especially in the tropics, are purulent skin inflammation (pyoderma), the main cause of Staphylococcus aureus. The increasing number of cases of bacteria that are resistant to antibacterial can encourage the extraction of sources of antibacterial drugs from natural ingredients. One of the plants that is thought to have the antibacterial activity of Staphylococcus aureus is the Neem plant. In this study an antibacterial activity test was carried out with the well diffusion method from 96% ethanol extract of Mimba leaves extracted by percolation method. Previously 96% ethanol extract from Mimba leaves had been identified by secondary metabolites by phytochemical screening and standardized extract testing. Standarization using non-specific parameters (moisture content, ash content and drying losses) found that 96% ethanol extract of Mimba leaves entered a range of standard parameters and in phytochemical screening tests obtained 96% ethanol extract of Mimba leaves containing alcaloid, saponins, tannins, steroids / terpenoids and flavonoids. The results of the study on the antibacterial activity test showed a concentration of 75% ethanol extract of 96% Mimba leaves classified as having strong activity, at a concentration of 50% and 25% classified as having moderate activity. Based on this study it can be concluded that the three concentrations of 96% ethanol extract of Mimba leaves were able to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.

ABSTRACT Sponges are one source of producing bioactive components from the sea. Bacteria Symbiosis with sponges are thought to have the potential to produce bioactive compounds that have been isolated from sponges. One of the potential of bioactive compounds which have been found and developed from sponges was antibacterial. The aim of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of bacteria associated with Phyllospongia lamellose sponges against pathogenic bacteria namely Staphylococcus aureus and Esherichia coli and then proceed with identification of biochemistry in isolates which showed the greatest inhibitory activity. Three isolates of sponges symbiont bacteria were obtained through the isolation and purification stage which were then followed by testing of antibacterial activity with paper disk diffusion method. The antibacterial test results showed the diameter of the inhibitory zone against Staphylococcus aureus, were: SL1(8.67 mm), SL2 (9.33 mm) and SL3(9.00 mm) categorized as medium. Whereas the inhibiotion zone shown on Esherichia coli bacteria is also classified as medium, were: SL1(9.67 mm), SL2 (9.00 mm) and SL3 (9.33 mm). The three isolates continued to the identification stage biochemically. Each isolation was assumed as follows: Desulfotomaculum (SL1), Brochothrix (SL2) and Sulfidobacillus (SL3). Keyword         :Phyllospongia lamellose, isolation, biochemically identification ABSTRAK Spons merupakan salah satu sumber penghasil komponen bioaktif yang berasal dari laut.
