The utilization of renewable electricity for power-to-gas (PtG) applications induces fluctuations in the H2 availability from water electrolysis. For subsequent methanation of CO or CO2 the unsteady-state operation of the respective reactor allows to minimize H2 storage capacities. However, the impact of temporal fluctuations in feed gas composition on the methanation reaction and the respective transient kinetics has not yet been fully understood. We investigated the methanation of various CO/CO2 (COx) feed gas mixtures under periodically changing gas compositions with emphasis on the effect of the frequency on the reactor response. We show that the frequency response of CH4 exhibits a characteristic hysteresis, which depends on the switching direction between COx-lean and COx-rich feeds and their composition. From the shape of the hysteresis we are able to conclude on the preferred COx species being hydrogenated to CH4 under respective conditions, which also provides mechanistic insights. By applying high cycling frequencies, the highly reactive species present under CO methanation conditions can even selectively be activated, which explains the higher reactivity compared to steady-state conditions reported, frequently.

Germany’s energy transition, known as ‘Energiewende’, was always very progressive. However, it came technically to a halt at the question of large-scale, seasonal energy storage for wind and solar, which was not available. At the end of the 2000s, we combined our knowledge of both electrical and process engineering, imitated nature by copying photosynthesis and developed Power-to-Gas by combining water electrolysis with CO2-methanation to convert water and CO2 together with wind and solar power to synthetic natural gas. Storing green energy by coupling the electricity with the gas sector using its vast TWh-scale storage facility was the solution for the biggest energy problem of our time. This was the first concept that created the term ‘sector coupling’ or ‘sectoral integration’. We first implemented demo sites, presented our work in research, industry and ministries, and applied it in many macroeconomic studies. It was an initial idea that inspired others to rethink electricity as well as eFuels as an energy source and energy carrier. We developed the concept further to include Power-to-Liquid, Power-to-Chemicals and other ways to ‘convert’ electricity into molecules and climate-neutral feedstocks, and named it ‘Power-to-X’at the beginning of the 2010s.

The advantages of increased penetration of distributed generation are also accompanied by several challenges, low inertia being one of them, which threatens the grid stability. An emerging approach to confront this problem is the introduction of so-called virtual inertia (VI) provided by energy storage systems (ESS). In contrast to the already available literature which considers a conventional load frequency control (LFC) model, this work concentrates on a modified LFC model as the integration of a large portion of ESS changes the inertia constant ( H ) of a power system. A sensitivity function is derived that shows the effects of changes in H on the power system’s frequency response. With the help of the developed mathematical model and simulation results, it is shown that a difference in the actual and calculated values of H can deteriorate the system performance and economy. As one of the reasons for this difference is improper modeling of ESS in the LFC model, therefore, the study signifies the accurate calculation of H in the power systems having enlarged penetration of ESS.

In modern electrical transmission and distribution systems, power transformers are critical components within the network. In the event that a failure occurs in service, the impact can be far reaching. The majority of mechanical deformation within power transformers is due to short circuit faults. The ageing transformer population increases the likelihood of failure so a reliable diagnostic tools required to determine the remaining life of these assets. Although, frequency response analysis (FRA) has been recently recognized as the most reliable detection tool for mechanical deformation in transformers, in the event of minor fault, the current FRA interpretation approach may not able to detect any variations between healthy and faulty FRA signatures. This paper focuses on FRA tests for power transformer and interpretation of obtained FRA signatures.

The power transformer is a key object in the electrical power system. The working principle hasn’t changed since its discovery. The main work nowadays is focused on the rising of the reliability of transformers and lowering power losses. The replacement of new materials instead of conventionally used ones can provide a solution. This procedure can improve factors, like a reduction of power losses, but also influence others normally neglected, like proper work in higher frequencies. The article presents the measurement results of the frequency characteristics of model test coils made with different magnetic materials cores (silicon steel, amorphous material, and nanocrystalline material), the measurements based on the sweep frequency response analysis (SFRA) method used for the determination of chosen frequency characteristics. The analysis presents the impact of different coil deformation levels on frequency characteristics. Results show that the replacement of conventional silicon steel with thinner high permeability materials can modify the state-of-the-art frequency response analysis (FRA) interpretation guidelines. The replacement of a new type of magnetic material as a magnetic core in the existing design of power transformer should lead to a full analysis of its behavior in the high-frequency domain.

After the three-dimensional solid modeling of the SG135 automobile gearbox, finite element analysis models of static, transient and harmonic response load are built based on correlation theory. On the basis of ADAMS dynamic simulation of different gearbox gears, transient load of the gearbox casing at different working gears is found out. With frequency response characteristic of gearbox casing analyzed at typical working conditions of first gear and reverse gear, the evaluation of some factors such as strength and stiffness are given out, which provides theory basis for further improvement of gearbox casing structure and strengthening weak links. Based on harmonic response analysis, the impact on gearbox casing structural vibration by harmonic excitation of the engine is imitated, and the match relation of frequency response between the gearbox and the engine is analyzed. Improvements about engine operational limits matching and gearbox structural design are proposed.
