This thesis explores how children engage with horror narratives in the digital era and how this engagement has changed over the last decade. The term ‘Horror narratives’ encompasses a wide range of genre-based storytelling from urban legends, to creepypastas, to images, YouTube videos, and internet forums. It is a broad form of story-sharing that transcends physical and digital mediums. I examine the relationship between the horror narratives, the individual child, and wider group engagement in real-life and on a digital platforms, and how this has changed over the last fifteen years. Over the past twenty years children’s access to personal devices and digital media has expanded rapidly. I ask whether oral tradition has been overtaken by digital horror narratives. What does story-sharing look like in a digital medium? Part of this paper is looking at how children’s horror narrative repertoires develop and what stories are retained and disseminated among their peers. In my childhood era the predominant form of dissemination was oral story-sharing, but during my fieldwork with young scouts I learned that children engage in a variety of media for dissemination as they now have easier access to internet communities on their personal devices. I have compared popular oral urban legends from my childhood (Click Click Slide, Drip Drip, and “Johnny, I want my liver back”) to contemporary horror narratives children engage with both in real-life and in the digital medium. My thesis also explores the relationship between young adults in their early twenties and memories of these horror narratives from their childhood, and how these memories have been impacted by nostalgia and retroactive knowledge. The major question of this thesis is how has horror storytelling changed from my childhood fifteen years ago to present time, and what have new technologies contributed to this evolution in horror narration?

The study of the Synoptic Problem continues with a wide range of hypotheses proposed to explain the relationship of Mark, Matthew and Luke to the early Jesus tradition, and to each other. This article reviews recent developments in synoptic studies highlighting the recognition of the ongoing role of the oral tradition, the ways in which scribal compositional practices in the first century have been used to test the major hypotheses, and the methodological constraints that accompany research in this area.

Drawing on an ethnographic pilot study carried out in a refugee residence in Hamburg in 2017/18, this paper explores the relationship between smartphone usage and multilingual repertoires among refugee families from Syria and Afghanistan who arrived in Germany since 2015. The data includes nine semi-directed interviews, in which the informants report on their media and language choices for various purposes and to various types of addressees, ethnographic field notes, and video demonstrations of smartphone usage by some of the informants. Analysis focuses on a comparison of the mediational repertoires in two families, originating in Syria and Afghanistan. We explore the relevance of various factors, such as literacy, type of social contact, and purpose of digital media use, to the informants’ linguistic choices from their repertoire. Both families rely on a wide range on languages and smartphone applications in their everyday life at the residence. In both families, mediational repertoires differ by generation. The paper also discusses sources and strategies for smartphone-based language-learning. The findings suggest that media literacy and Internet access are highly relevant to the process of social integration, including language learning, among refugees.

ABSTRACTIn recent years, experts fromaround the world have warned that printed newspapers may disappear in the medium term. In some cases, even specific dates were given. The proliferation of digital media and the paradigma shift in our society are usually mentioned among the causes of this disappearance, especially when it comes to the media. Focusing particularly on the Spanish case, this paper offers an alternative vision, providing evidence that it’s not the first time a possible disappearance of printed newspapers is being discussed, that the Internet isn’t the main reason for the crisis hitting the sector, and that newspa-pers aren’t facing the worst crisis in thirty years. Although both printed newspapers and printed books could disappear in a still distant future, no concluding evidencepoints in that direction and this kind of statements are not to be recommended.RESUMENExpertos de todo el mundo han alertado en los últimos años sobre la posibilidad de que los periódicos impresos puedan desaparecer a medio plazo.

Academic text recommendation, as a kind of text recommendation, has a wide range of application prospects. Predicting texts of interest to scholars in different fields based on anonymous sessions is a challenging problem. However, the existing session-based method only considers the sequential information, and pays more attention to capture the session purpose. The relationship between adjacent items in the session is not noticed. Specifically in the field of session-based text recommendation, the most important semantic relationship of text is not fully utilized. Based on the graph neural network and attention mechanism, this paper proposes a session-based text recommendation model (TXT-SR) incorporating the semantic relations, which is applied to the academic field. TXT-SR makes full use of the tightness of semantic connections between adjacent texts. We have conducted experiments on two real-life academic datasets from CiteULike. Experimental results show that TXT-SR has better effectiveness than existing session-based recommendation methods.

Towards the middle of the sixteenth century, the Portuguese composer and theorist Vicente Lusitano wrote a manuscript treatise on improvised counterpoint which constitutes the most thorough and detailed explanation that has survived on the subject. This manuscript has long been overlooked by music historians, despite being easily accessible at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (Paris). The manuscript is described and its history traced. Lusitano's rules, techniques and stylistic advice are investigated and compared with contemporary theory. The extraordinary complexity of the contrapuntal lines singers were expected to invent extempore calls for a reappraisal of the relationship between improvisation and composition, also discussed by Lusitano. Historical evidence is adduced to provide a context for this document; far from being disconnected from the real life of sixteenth-century music, Lusitano's manuscript counterpoint treatise provides a key to understanding the oral tradition of Renaissance art music.

The development of various technologies in the second half of the twentieth century brought about the emergence of new art genres. While these new forms of art were striving for recognition and gaining popularity, the older legacy forms were also undergoing some transformations. Undoubtedly, technological innovations alter the relationships between the forms of creative expression and the audience for which art is intended. Art has not been perceived in the same way after the digital media came on stage. While arguing if computer graphics is actually a form of art, we tend to overlook the main issue: does the development of new technologies changes the entire nature of art. Traditional aesthetics is faced with the huge problem to collect, analyze and summarize the wide range of newly emerging genres of art. Most of them are not susceptible of generalization and methodization because of the unlimited freedom and dynamism in their development.

The role of monetary factor in generating inflationary processes in Russia has stimulated various debates in social and scientific circles for a relatively long time. The authors show that identification of the specificity of relationship between money and inflation requires a complex approach based on statistical modeling and involving a wide range of indicators relevant for the price changes in the economy. As a result a model of inflation for Russia implying the decomposition of inflation dynamics into demand-side and supply-side factors is suggested. The main conclusion drawn is that during the recent years the volume of inflationary pressures in the Russian economy has been determined by the deviation of money supply from money demand, rather than by money supply alone. At the same time, monetary factor has a long-run spread over time impact on inflation.

The Soil Science Institute of Thessaloniki produces new digitized Soil Maps that provide a useful electronic database for the spatial representation of the soil variation within a region, based on in situ soil sampling, laboratory analyses, GIS techniques and plant nutrition mathematical models, coupled with the local land cadastre. The novelty of these studies is that local agronomists have immediate access to a wide range of soil information by clicking on a field parcel shown in this digital interface and, therefore, can suggest an appropriate treatment (e.g. liming, manure incorporation, desalination, application of proper type and quantity of fertilizer) depending on the field conditions and cultivated crops. A specific case study is presented in the current work with regards to the construction of the digitized Soil Map of the regional unit of Kastoria. The potential of this map can easily be realized by the fact that the mapping of the physicochemical properties of the soils in this region provided delineation zones for differential fertilization management. An experiment was also conducted using remote sensing techniques for the enhancement of the fertilization advisory software database, which is a component of the digitized map, and the optimization of nitrogen management in agricultural areas.
