There are several Fitness-For-Service (FFS) standards with evaluation rules in terms of plastic collapse for a pressure vessel or piping component possessing a local metal loss area simultaneously subjected to internal pressure and bending moment. The authors have already reported the results of a comparative study of FFS rules, including the remaining strength factor (RSF) approach in Part 5 of API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 and the p-M diagram method, which pointed out that there could be significant differences in allowable flaw sizes. This paper describes an additional comparative study on the difference of allowable flaw size for local metal loss assessment between the RSF approach in Part 5 of API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 and the p-M diagram method, focusing on the effect of decreasing yield strength of the material at high temperatures, such as 350 degrees C. The allowable flaw depth at high temperatures derived from API579-1/ASME FFS-1 is larger than that derived by means of the p-M diagram method. However, it is verified by the finite element analysis that the allowable flaw size of the p-M diagram method is set on the stress state of general yielding near a local metal loss area if safety factor is not considered and it is possible to evade ratcheting due to cyclic bending moment in service, such as that caused by earthquake, etc.

SUMMARYA comparative study of two male recombination factors (31. 1 MRF and 23. 5 MRF) isolated from the same Southern Greek natural population, revealed specific differences in their activities. 23. 5 MRF induces female sterility due to atrophie ovaries at a wide range of temperatures while 31. 1 MRF does so only at high temperatures. The gross morphology of the atrophie ovaries was the same and unilaterally affected pairs were found in the F1of crosses with both 23. 5 and 31. 1 MRF. Furthermore, 23. 5 MRF induces: (a) lower frequencies of abnormal anaphases I and II than 31. 1 MRF, (b) higher frequencies of ‘double crossovers’ resulting from deficiences or duplications, (c) large clusters of recombinants, suggesting premeiotic origin and (d) cases where one of the non-recombinant phenotypes was not produced. Such cases have never been observed with 31. 1 MRF. Moreover, the cytoplasm of theCy L4/Pmstrain that suppresses 31. 1 MRF does not affect the activities of 23. 5 MRF. Hypotheses to explain the different behaviour of the two factors are presented and discussed.

The construction applications of structural steel mainly include super high-rise buildings and long-span structures. The advantages offered by structural steel to the construction sector and building environment have long been recognised, as evidenced by the increasing market share of structural steelwork in many marketplaces, but not in Hong Kong. The annual import quantity of fabricated steel structures in Hong Kong is 0.2 - 0.3 million tons, which indicates a low demand for structural steelwork in the local construction industry. This study aims to identify the major barriers and potential driving factors to the use of structural steel in Hong Kong. Interviews were conducted with a private developer, three main contractors, and two steel specialist contractors. These industry professionals offered four construction applications that addressed the major problems and driving factors for using steel-framed structures. The four cases included a Chinese opera centre, a swimming pool, a 24-story hotel, and a commercial building. These case studies reveal that steel-framed structures are adopted only for projects that have technical requirements. Otherwise, reinforced concrete structures are used because steel-framed structures are cost-efficient for super high-rise and long-span structures but not for normal types of buildings. The fast construction of structural steelwork can result in an early return on investment, which may outweigh the high construction cost. This advantage will be particularly significant for retail building projects with high land prices in Hong Kong. This study offers strategies for facilitating the fast construction of structural steelwork. If these strategies are implemented to resolve problems, then the application of steel-framed structures to many tall buildings in Hong Kong can be feasible.

This study analyzes the performance of wooden structural floors equipped with the self-tensioning system patented by the authors, consisting of a force multiplying mechanism connected to a self-tensioning tendon, which is activated automatically when the load is applied to the structural element. The paper describes the system’s difficulties when the structural floor is subjected to asymmetrical loads. The proposed solution consists of anchoring the tendon by an adhesive connection in the central part of the piece yielding a favorable redistribution of the bending moments and an effective performance in terms of deformations. The comparative study focuses onπ-shape cross section pieces with spans of 12 m and 15 m, using sections without prestressing and with initial prestressing and self-tensioning system.

Abstract HPS 100W is specified in ASTM A 709 (Standard Specification for Carbon and High-Strength Low-Alloy Structural Steel Shapes, Plates, and Bars and Quenched-and-Tempered Alloy Structural Steel Plates for Bridges) and is being added to AASHTO M270. Initial applications were planned to be those in which an owner bridge engineer would approve the use of HPS 100W. This steel would be most useful for depth control over piers in long-span girder bridges or controlling the size of high-stressed elements in long-span steel truss bridges.
