Background: Conjunctivitis is a common infection among neonates and it is a known cause of preventable childhood blindness. There is geographical variation in the distribution of aetiological agents. Objective: To assess the prevalence of conjunctivitis among hospitalized neonates receiving care in a tertiary health care centre in South-west Nigeria, and describe its clinical and bacteriological correlates. Methods: The hospital records of neonates diagnosed with conjunctivitis at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu between January 2015 and December 2019 were reviewed. Their bio-data, perinatal history, laboratory results and treatment received were extracted for analysis. Results: One hundred and twenty-two neonates had conjunctivitis out of a total number of 2,286 admissions, giving a prevalence rate of 5.3%.  Male infants had almost double the risk of developing the disease compared to female infants (OR = 1.6; 95% CI: 1.09-2.35).  Eighty-six (70.5%) babies were term, while 21 (17.2%) and 15 (12.3%) were preterm and small-for-gestational-age respectively. Most cases of neonatal conjunctivitis (82.0%) occurred in the first week of life while the mean ±SD age of onset was 5.3±4.5 days. Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella species were the commonest bacterial isolates affecting 57.1% and 23.0% neonates respectively. Moderately-high rates of resistance to erythromycin and gentamicin were observed among the bacterial isolates. Conclusion: Neonatal conjunctivitis is commonly due to Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella species in this setting. It is commoner among male infants.  Most cases run a mild course with good response to topical antimicrobial therapy.

Aims: To determine the pathogenic and the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of bacterial isolates on hand surfaces in public buses in Nairobi. Study Design: A random sampling technique was utilized and targeted public buses plying Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) and Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) 7C route. Place and Duration of Study: Bacterial isolates were obtained from hand surfaces in public buses in Nairobi during a three-month period, May-July 2015. Methodology: A total of 30 swab samples were collected using sterile moist cotton swabs then cultured on three media including MacConkey agar, Mannitol salt agar and Eosin Methyl Blue agar (EMB). Characterization of isolates was by morphological and biochemical features. Antimicrobial susceptibility profile tests using eight antibiotics including tetracycline, sulphamethoxazole, chloramphenicol, kanamycin, gentamycin, ampicillin, co-trimoxazole and streptomycin was also undertaken. Results: A total of 45 isolates indicated the following prevalence: Staphylococcus aureus 33%, Escherichia coli 24%, Staphylococcus epidermidis 18%, Klebsiella species 11% and Pseudomonas species 13%. The antimicrobial resistance profiles indicated E. coli isolates had the highest resistance to five antibiotics, Klebsiella spp. to four, Staphylococcus aureus to three, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudomonas spp. each to only one antibiotic. Isolates were predominantly resistant to ampicillin (100%) followed by co-trimoxazole and streptomycin but were instead sensitive to gentamycin followed by tetracycline, sulphamethoxazole and chloramphenicol. Conclusion: These findings demonstrate serious health risks posed to the community by potentially pathogenic and antibiotic resistant bacterial species on hand-touch sites in public buses. Therefore, this study creates awareness of the need for stringent sanitary measures in public buses and hygienic practices among commuters to forestall transmission of community acquired infections.

This study was initiated on 24 prepubertal Holstein x Kankrej crossbred heifers of nearly identical age (7-9 months) and body weight (130-140 kg) at University farm to evaluate the effect of high plane of nutrition on blood biochemical and minerals profile and the age at puberty. Twelve heifers were managed under routine farm feeding (control) and the rest 12 under ideal optimum feeding regime (treatment) that included extra 1 kg concentrate, 30 g min mix and ad-lib dry fodder. The body weight and ovarian ultrasonography together with blood sampling was carried out at monthly interval from 10 to 18 months of age to study the ovarian dynamics and blood biochemical changes. High plane of nutrition to growing heifers was beneficial in reducing the age of onset of puberty (by 2-3 months) compared to routine farm fed group. The mean plasma total protein and cholesterol concentrations showed a rising trend with significant variations from 10 to 16 months of age, where it got mostly stabilized indicating adult profile. The activity of enzymes GOT and GPT also rose gradually and significantly from 10 months till 14-15 months of age, and thereafter it remained more or less static till 18 months of age. The levels of both these enzymes were higher, with lower protein and cholesterol, in control than the treatment group from 15-16 months of age onwards. The mean plasma levels of both calcium and phosphorus increased gradually and significantly with advancing age till 16-17 months of age, with little higher values in supplemented than a control group. The plasma levels of zinc, iron, copper, and cobalt also showed rising trend with significant differences between 10th and 12th-14th months of age, and from 15th to 18th months of age the levels were statistically the same in all the groups with slightly higher values in the treatment group.

Background:Enthesitis is the clinical hallmark of spondylarthritis. It refers to the inflammation of joint attach in the bone. Several sites enthesitis may be affected, and a wide variety of scoring systems were available.Objectives:We aimed to determine the prevalence of axial enthesitis in the anterior chest wall (ACW), and its correlation with peripheral sites especially, the Achilles tendon (AT).Methods:We conducted a prospective study including patients with SpA according to the ASAS criteria. Sociodemographic data, as well as disease characteristics, were recorded. The Maastricht Ankylosing Spondylitis Enthesitis Score (MASES) was used to assess clinical entheses (first and seventh costochondral joints, posterior superior iliac spine, anterior superior iliac spine, iliac crest, and Achilles tendon insertion). The presence of enthesitis on the US was then assessed in the right and left sternoclavicular (SCJ), manubriosternal (MSJ) joints, as well as in the AT, using Esaote My Lab 50.Results:The study included 47 patients with SpA: axial (n=26), axial and peripheral (n=21). There was a female predominance (sex ratio: 0.2). The mean age was 42.2 years ± 12.6 [11-70]. The age of onset of the disease was <40 years in 59.6% of cases. Tenderness in entheseal sites was found in 63.8% of patients, especially in the plantar fascia and AT (32.7%, 6%, respectively). The mean MASES score was 2.9 [0-13]. Clinical ACW involvement (29.1%) was at follows: 1st right chondro-sternal joint (CSJ) (19.1%), 1st left CSJ (25.5%), 7th right CSJ (27.7%) and 7th left CSJ (31.9%).US involvement of the ACW was 14.3%. Enthesitis of the AT was found in 70% of cases on US examination. ACW US involvement was correlated neither to the BMI nor to MASES score (p=0.16, p=0.6 respectively). Similarly, there was no correlation between the presence of US ACW enthesitis and clinical nor the US AT enthesitis (p=0.09, p=0.209, respectively).Conclusion:Our study showed that ACW enthesitis is frequent in SpA, especially by US screening. This axial enthesitis, don’t necessarily reflect a simultaneous clinical or US involvement of the peripheral entheses. Background:Osteoporosis is an increasingly important health problem among patients with spondyloarthritis (SPA). The Measure of Bone Mineral Density BMD is routinely carried out in an anteroposterior (AP) view of the spine. However, the syndesmophytes, ligaments calcifications, and the posterior part of vertebrae affect AP scanning. A lateral spine view is a more sensitive tool in assessing bone loss in trabecular bone.Objectives:We aimed to evaluate the association between lateral lumbar DXA and syndesmophyte grading in patients with SPA.Methods:We conducted a retrospective study including 75 patients with SPA. Bone density of the hip and lumbar spine was measured with a GE Lunar Prodigy Advance Bone Densitometer equipment. All patients had lumbar lateral, AP, and proximal femur DXA scans. The T-score, which measures the difference between a patient’s BMD and young-normal subjects, was computed and age-matched.Results:The mean age of the patients was 36±11 years. Male predominance was noted with a sex ratio of 4.76. The mean BMI was 25±5 kg/m2. Eight percent were obese. Fifty-two percent had Vitamin D deficiency.Forty-eight percent of the patients had axial SPA, while 52% had axial and peripheral symptoms.The mean age of onset was 27±7 years. Fifty-two percent of the patients had high inflammatory biomarkers. The BASDAI, ASDAS-VS, and ASDAS-CRP mean levels were respectively: 3.5±2.4, 3.1±0.9, and 3±0.8. The mean BASRI and mass were respectively 8 + 4.8 and 16.4 + 19.4. Analyses of T-score values obtained over the femoral neck revealed osteoporosis in 18.7% of the cases and osteopenia in 32% of the cases. On the other hand, analyses of AP, spine views revealed osteoporosis in 25.3% and osteopenia in 45.3% of patients (p=0.028, r=0.254). We detected the highest percentage of osteoporosis in lateral lumbar view and T-scores matched more closely with femoral neck values; osteoporosis in 29.3%, and osteopenia in 22.7% of the patients (p<10-3, r=0.562). BMD measured in AP, and lateral views were in good agreement (p<10-3, p=0.592). Age was inversely but not significantly associated with BMD in lateral (p=0.442, r=-0.09), AP (p=0.319, r=-0.117) and femoral neck projections (p=0.179, r=-0.157). Femoral neck BMD was associated with the activity of SPA (ASDAS vs (p=0.027, r= -0.295), and the mobility limitation BASMI (p=0.032, r= -0.247). Coxitis, BASRI, or mSASS were independent of BMD.Conclusion:We conclude that spine lateral view in DXA accurately measures BMD exceeding the AP spine views and femoral neck values. The microbiological quality of fresh blue crabmeat, soft- and hardshell clams and shucked Eastern oysters was determined at the retail (crabmeat, oysters) and wholesale (clams) levels. Geometric means of aerobic plate counts incubated at 35°C were: blue crabmeat 140,000 colony-forming units (CFU)/g, hardshell clams, 950 CFU/g, softshell clams 680 CFU/g and shucked Eastern oysters 390,000 CFU/g. Coliform geometric means ranged from 3,6/100 g for hardshell clams to 21/g for blue crabmeat. Means for fecal coliforms or Escherichia coli ranged from &lt;3/100 g for clams to 27/100 g for oysters, The mean Staphylococcus aureus count in blue crabmeat was 10/g.

Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium perfringens. Salmonella choleraesuis, and Salmonella typhimurium were inoculated (108 cells or spores) into two slow cookers containing green bean casserole, baked navy beans, chicken cacciatore, barbecued ribs or pork pot roast, and their fate determined after cooking. Heating patterns also were determined at three positions inside the two cookers. None of the foods cooked in either of the slow cookers contained detectable levels of S. aureus or salmonellae. The similarity between C. perfringens vegetative and spore counts indicate that only spores were present in the cooked foods. Except for the green bean casserole cooked using a low temperature setting, cooking resulted in a 0.44–1.67 and 0.36–1.54 log count reduction, respectively, of vegetative cells and spores of C. perfringens. Counts of vegetative cells and spores after cooking the green bean casserole were approximately .18 and .30 log counts higher than the uncooked counts. The mean times for the coldest areas in Cooker A to reach 50 C were 2.57 and 0.97 h, respectively, for the low (80 watts) and high (160 watts) temperature settings. The mean times for the coldest areas in Cooker B (removable liner) to reach 50 C were 2.35 and 0.52 h for the low (130 watts) and high (260 watts) temperature settings, respectively. Results suggest that when the recommended quantities of ingredients are used and the proper cooking procedure followed, foods prepared in the slow cookers studied do not present a health hazard.

Nudibranchs are marine invetebrates belongs to the class of Gastropoda that are able to camouflage and develop a self-defense systems. Marine bacteria contain chemicals compunds that have potentials on marine drugs discovery through the secondary metabolism. The purpose of this study was to isolate the symbiotic bacteria from nudibranches Phylidiella pustulosa and Thuridilla lineolate and to screen the antibacterial activity of these bacterial isolates against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Isolation and culture of the symbiotic bacteria was made on B1 (solid) media. The results of the antibacterial assay showed that the symbiotic bacterial isolates from Phylidiella pustulosa and Thuridilla lineolate were able to inhibit the growth of the Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli test. The present study takes into consideration some of the symptoms comprised in the Periodic Syndrome. These include motion-sickness, cyclic vomiting, recurrent abdominal pains and paroxysmal vertigo. Particular consideration is given to the chronological and long-term aspects of such symptoms. Among 247 migraine sufferers in the pediatric age group, 173 subjects who complained of at least one of these symptoms were chosen. Results of the data show that motion-sickness is the first to manifest itself (mean age of onset 2 years), and has a tendency to continue into the headache period; cyclic vomiting appears in the third year of life, and terminates sooner than the other symptoms. At the mean age of five years abdominal pains start, and at seven, paroxysmal vertigo. Headache is the final symptom in this group. The sequentiality of such disturbances in each subject leads to the assumption that the Periodic Syndrome is the expression of a single disorder which manifests itself polymorphously as a rather precisely timed process. Parmi les symptômes qui constituent le syndrome periodique de l'enfance, nous prenons en considération, dans cette étude, le mal d'auto, les vomissements cycliques, les douleurs abdominales récurrentes et les vertiges paroxystiques; nous en considérons particulièrement les aspects chronologiques et l'évolution à long terme. Il s'agit de 173 sujets, choisis parmi 247 migraineux en âge évolutif, qui ont présenté au moins un des symptômes que nous avons étudiés. L'analyse des données révèle que le mal d'auto est le premier qui se manifeste (au cours de la 2èMe année) et qu'il tend à continuer au-delà du moment où apparait la céphalée; au cours de la 3eMe année apparaissent les vomissements cycliques cui cessent plus tôt que les autres troubles; par la suite, vers l'âge de 5 ans, commencent les douleurs abdominales et vers 7 ans les vertiges paroxystiques; enfin apparait la céphalée. L'observation de la séquence de ces troubles chez les différents sujets nous amène à penser que le Syndrome périodique est l'expression d'un potentiel pathogène unique qui s'exprime à travers des aspects polymorphes selon une séquence temporelle assez précise. Fra i sintomi che costituiscono la Sindrome periodica dell'infanzia, nel presente studio prendiamo in esame il mal d'auto, i vomiti ciclici, i dolori addominali ricorrenti e le vertigini parossistiche, considerandone in particolare gli aspetti cronologici e di evoluzione a lungo termine. Si tratta di 173 soggetti, scelti fra 247 emicranici in età evolutiva che hanno lamentato almeno uno dei sintomi da noi considerati. Dall'analisi dei dati emerge che il mal d'auto si manifesta per primo (Il anno di vita) e tende a protrarsi oltre il momento d'insorgenza della cefalea; nel III anno compaiono i vomiti ciclici che si estinguono più precocemente degli altri disturbi; successivamente, verso i 5 anni, iniziano i dolori addominali e verso i 7 anni le vertigini parossistiche. Infine compare la cefalea. L'osservazione della sequenzialità di tali disturbi nei singoli soggetti ci fa pensare che la Sindrome periodica sia l'espressione di un unico potenziale patogeno che si estrinseca in aspetti polimorfi con una sequenza temporale abbastanza precisa.

Abstract Background Panton-Valentine toxin (PVT) is an important pathological marker of staphylococcal infection mediated by functional as well as morphological damage of the phagocytic cells. Human body being an ecological niche for the bacteria shows higher affinity toward staphylococcal infection. A steady escalation in mortality and morbidity associated with antibiotic resistance in gram-positive infections is an emerging threat all over the globe; thus, it is important to find out an alternative strategy that can diminish the virulence and pathogenicity of the bacteria. Staphylococcin is a colicin-type chemical secreted by Staphylococcus aureus helps to prevent growth of organisms other than its progenitor. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of homoeopathic medicine Staphylococcinum against staphylococcal PVT at different potencies (6CH, 12CH, 30CH and 200CH). Materials and Methods Different potencies of Staphylococcinum were administered in a leucocyte buffy coat preparation infected with staphylococcal suspension (0.5 McFarland's standard) along with control with alcohol. They were kept in incubator for 2 hours and then centrifuged at 1200 rpm for 5 minutes. Smears prepared on slides with centrifuged deposits stained by Preston and Morrell's modified Gram's method of staining and evaluated under the microscope. Results It was observed that there was extensive destruction of leukocytes in control and 6CH potency, while the degree of destruction decreased markedly from 12CH to 200CH. At 200CH potency, leukocytes were almost normal, which clearly indicate the preventive action of Staphylococcinum against PVT. The mean percentages of intact leucocytes were 0.73, 0.93, 10.00, 27.67 and 65.00 in control, 6CH, 12CH, 30CH and 200CH potencies, respectively. Conclusion The finding may help in the use of this medicine in moribund patients in cases of disseminated S. aureus infection as there is no known side effect of the medicine. However, in vivo study is necessary before such use in those cases.

We assessed the outcomes of the use of anterior chamber foldable lens for unilateral aphakia correction at the University Teaching Hospital of Yaounde. In this retrospective, non-comparative, consecutive case series study, we reviewed the records of patients who underwent an operation for aphakia correction by the means of injection of an angular supported foldable lens between January 2009 and December 2011 in the University Teaching Hospital Yaounde. Student's paired t-test was carried out to compare preoperative and postoperative visual acuity (VA) and intraocular pressure (TOP). P-values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Twenty-one patients were included in the study; twelve were male (57.1%) and nine were female (42.9%). The mean age was 55.38 ± 17.67 years (range 9–75 years). The mean follow-up duration was 5.95 ± 3.14 months (range 2–12 months). The mean logMAR visual acuity was 1.26 ± 0.46 pre-operatively and 0.78 ± 0.57 post-operatively ( P = 0.003). The change in intraocular pressure was not statistically significant. Complications included intraocular hypertension (over 21 mmHg) in 3 patients (14.3%) and macular edema, pupillar ovalization, and retinal detachment in one patient each. The results indicate that injection of an angular support foldable lens in the anterior chamber is a useful technique for the correction of aphakia in eyes without capsular support. More extended follow-up, however, and a larger series of patients are needed to ascertain the effectiveness and safety of this procedure.
