The results of this study indicate two main things, namely: (1) Vocabulary is the component of reading that is most affected. As many as 40% of respondents chose vocabulary as the most affected reading component, 35% of respondents chose comprehension ability, 15% of respondents chose reading fluency and 10% of respondents chose phonemic awareness. (2) It was found that 10 respondents were judged to show a positive attitude towards the use of Wattpad, 6 respondents showed a neutral attitude and 4 respondents showed a negative attitude towards the use of Wattpad.

The students' reading comprehension is very lowat the pandemic era, Theyare difficult to understand the text, they don’t haveEnough English vocabulary, Many teachers/lecturer used techniques that wereless precise in teaching reading, and the students got reading comprehension scores below the minimum completion criteria (KKM). This research aims to determine whether using Reading, Encoding, Annotating, and Pondering techhnique as Learning process in pandemic era to improve reading comprehension stability for students. This research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative method, which describe of students’s problem at pandemic era by zoom in the Internet after that, analyze the data which used percentage. The researcher also has done pre-assesment for supporting accurate data. The subjects of this research were 20 students, consisted 11 females and 9 males. The subject Instrument used in this research is reading comprehension test, researcher observation cheklits and field notes, student observation Cheklist and field notes, interview and documentation by zoom at the Internet. According to avarage results, the increasing for students' reading comprehension ability on the pre-assessment is the average student reaches, (55.14%), learning 1 (62.15%), learning 2 (70.14%), and learning 3 (75.65%) avarage students’ score increase and got standardization of school. AbstractThe present study compares the patterns of growth of beginning reading skills (i.e., phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension) of Spanish speaking monolingual students who received a Tier 2 reading intervention with students who did not receive the intervention. All the students in grades K-2 were screened at the beginning of the year to confirm their risk status. A quasi-experimental longitudinal design was used: the treatment group received a supplemental program in small groups of 3 to 5 students, for 30 minutes daily from November to June. The control group did not receive it. All students were assessed three times during the academic year. A hierarchical linear growth modeling was conducted and differences on growth rate were found in vocabulary in kindergarten (p < .001; variance explained = 77.0%), phonemic awareness in kindergarten (p < .001; variance explained = 43.7%) and first grade (p < .01; variance explained = 15.2%), and finally we also find significant growth differences for second grade in oral reading fluency (p < .05; variance explained = 15.1%) and retell task (p < .05; variance explained = 14.5%). Children at risk for reading disabilities in Spanish can improve their skills when they receive explicit instruction in the context of Response to Intervention (RtI). Findings are discussed for each skill in the context of implementing a Tier 2 small group intervention within an RtI approach. Implications for practice in the Spanish educational context are also discussed for children who are struggling with reading.

This chapter foregrounds the Lab-On-Line project, a technological innovation developed to enhance visual processing skills, improve memory and vocabulary, and increase reading fluency with the explicit aim of improving comprehension. Thirty (30) 3rd year students at one of the University of Namibia campuses participated in the pilot study. A pre-test was conducted for placement purpose. Subsequently, the selected sample commenced with the Lab-On-Line program that consists of 20 lessons that were carried out twice a week over a period of five months. Thereafter a Standardized Reading Evaluation was performed to determine their language proficiency, reading speed per minute and comprehension ability. Results show that the majority of participating students had improved their perceptual development and reading speed (VPF), cognitive development and comprehension skills (CDF), and relative reading efficiency (AIUF).

The ability to read Qurán of students with hearing impairments supported by special education is still not as expected due to the limited access to technology. The progress of technology such as a smartphone has led many people to adopt a view that the technology of application is very appropriate to be developed for their learning. In this study, we have developed an application called QUR'ANI to teach reading the Qur'an fluently and appropriately for students with hearing impairments. The method used was single subject research with the AB model. The effectiveness of this application in teaching the Qur’an for students with hearing impairments has been tested with positive effect. Besides, the teacher's subjective point of view in this application has also been consulted. This research found that there was a strong correlation between the components of reading fluency.

The study aimed at investigating the impact of pre-reading activities on male ESL upper-intermediate students’ comprehension in a post-basic education school in Oman. To this end, two reading comprehension tests and two questionnaires were administered to two groups of participants. One group served as control and the other served as experimental. Control group were assigned a reading comprehension test with follow up questions to answer. However, experimental participants were introduced to 10 minute-pre-reading activities prior to starting the test. The findings drawn from the comprehension tests revealed that experimental participants outperformed control participants. Data drawn from questionnaires showed that control group had a negative attitude to reading a text without pre-reading activities. However, experimental group had a positive attitude to reading a text after being introduced to the pre-reading activities. Although the study has shown empirically how effective the schema-based pre-reading activities were in maximizing ESL leaners’ comprehension ability, it had its limitations. It was restricted in setting and gender. It involved only two post-basic state schools. It was also restricted to male students. Second, it was limited to only two sample groups. Nevertheless, the findings of this study have confirmed preceding research on the effectiveness of the pre-reading activities and how they facilitate L2 learners’ comprehension ability of the target text. Therefore, it might be paramount for teachers and syllabus designers to incorporate pre-reading activities, which are in different forms and types, to the reading texts students read

Studies focusing on the strategy of phonics in Malaysia have highlighted the insufficiency and ineffectiveness of SBELC phonics training received by teachers, resulting in confusion among them as to what really constitutes effective use of the phonics strategy. On the other hand, systematic synthetic phonics (SSP) has been proven beneficial in accelerating the performance of children in their early literacy. However, few studies have been conducted on English language learners as the majority of those research was focused on native speakers of the English language. Against this background, this article presents a description of a systematic way of teaching phonics that could inform teachers on how the strategy can be optimally utilised to accelerate the performance of students who are possibly at risk of being left behind. It then reports an investigation that compared the efficacy of SSP against SBELC phonics in accelerating the acquisition of early literacy skills with a group of indigenous children residing in the rural parts of Sarawak, Malaysia. Five instruments; (1) productive letter-sound test, (2) free-sound isolation test, (3) reading test, (4) spelling test, and (5) oral-reading fluency test were administered to measure phonemic awareness, decoding, reading, and spelling ability. Data were collected from the pretest and the posttest. The results demonstrate that both groups recorded significant improvement in reading and spelling, but children in the experimental group (SSP) outperformed the control group (SBELC phonics) significantly. Following this, SSP should be implemented in classrooms to help accelerate children’s early reading fluency and spelling ability.

Video materials were used this study to examine the effectiveness of teaching English and to evaluate university students’ attitudes towards the use of video materials in teaching listening skills. The population for this study was 32 first-year midwifery students in the second semester of the academic year 2016/2017 at Adiwangsa University, Jambi. The sample were selected by total sampling technique. The study was conducted in 12 meeting including pretest and posttest. The one-group pretest-posttest design was implemented in this study. The instruments used in this study were lesson plans, English comprehension tests (pretest and posttest) and a questionnaire of the students’ attitude. Regarding the data analysis, mean score and pretest-posttest scores for the dependent sample were employed. The result indicated that the midwifery students’ English listening comprehension ability increased significantly after learning with videos and midwifery students had positive attitudes towards using videos in teaching listening skills.
