In the article on the material of the Salzburg weekly «New Days» (1945–1947) various spheres of activity of Peter Volyniak are presented. It is noted that this edition was a business card of the publishing house of the same name and had a history of continuation: in Toronto Petro Volyniak restored the publishing house of the same name and continued the publication in the format of the universal monthly «New Days» (1950–1969). The article also presents periodicals («Latest News», «New Days», «Timpani», «Our Way») and literary, artistic and scientific collection «Steering Wheel», which were published in the Salzburg publishing house of Peter Volyniak «New Days». The purpose of the publication is to trace the path of Petro Volyniak from a writer to a literary critic, journalist and publisher. This trend is reproduced in chronological order. Peter Volyniak as a writer is informed in the article «Literary Evening of P. Volyniak» (author – M. Ch-ka). O. Satsyuk’s literary-critical article is devoted to the coverage of ideological and artistic aspects of Petro Volyniak’s collection «The Earth Calls» (Salzburg, 1947). Petro Volyniak as a literary critic is presented in an article devoted to a collection of literary tales by A. Kolomiyets (Salzburg, 1946), which was published by «New Days». Petro Volyniak as a journalist presents the essay «This is our song…». With the help of content analysis it was observed that the text is divided into two parts: the first contains the author’s reflections on the Ukrainian song, its role in the life of the Ukrainian people; in the second, main, Peter Okopny’s activity abroad is presented. The publisher Petro Volyniak in 1947 in a separate publication of the February issue of the weekly summarizes the third year of activity, providing statistics on the publication of periodicals, books, postcards, calendars, various small format materials. The analyzed material demonstrated the experience of combining creative work and commercial activity.

In 1899 Sir Archibald Geikie edited and published the third volume of Hutton's Theory of the Earth. The two earlier volumes had been published as far back as 1795. In his preface Sir A. Geikie gives the history of the MS. from which the present volume was printed; and he provides at the end of the work not only an index of Vol. III, but also, and separately, a most valuable index of the two earlier volumes, in which we note three references to Arran. In Vol. Ill, however, the last and longest chapter is devoted to “An Examination of the Mineral History of the Island of Arran” (pp. 191–267).

The article is devoted to literary critic Il'ya Gruzdev. Published in 1925, an essay on the biography of Maxim Gorky, firmly linked the two names. Since that time, the author had firmly established a creative characteristic: the biographer of Maxim Gorky. The article considers other facets of literary and literary talent of Il'ya Gruzdev. The origin of the textology of Maxim Gorky's works of art is connected with his name. He was the compiler and editor of two editions of the works of the proletarian literature founder in the "State publishing house of fiction" in 1928-1930 and 1931-1934. For the researchers of Maxim Gorky's work, as a huge factual material, there is a correspondence between Maxim Gorky and Il'ya Gruzdev, which lasted from 1925 to 1936 (it was published in 1961). The article touches upon the issues of Il'ya Gruzdev's creative work after Maxim Gorky's death (1936). In the period from 1939 to 1941, he was the editor of Leningrad magazine "Zvezda" (Star). Attention is drawn to the bibliographic work of Il'ya Gruzdev, who was the author of a number of bibliographic books devoted to Maxim Gorky.

The third and fourth decades of. the seventeenth century, or more strictly speaking the years from 1625 to 1637, form a rather important period in the history of French literature. This is the time when the great Corneille makes his appearance and the “Académie française” is established. For this reason it is all the more striking that there exists, apparently, a great uncertainty concerning a number of the precursors and contemporaries of Corneille, not only with regard to chronology, but also as to their true merits. One of the poets of that time, about whom opinions seem to be divided as to his literary position and undecided as to the chronology, is Jean de Mairet. of Besançon, who lived from 1604 to 1684. The chief works which Mairet wrote, are in chronological order as follows:Chryséide et Arimand, a tragi-comedy; Sylvie, a pastoral; Silvanire, also a pastoral, or as Mairet himself terms it, a tragicomédie pastorale; Due d'Ossonne, a comedy; Virginie, a tragi-comedy; and the tragedies: Sophonisbe, Marc Antoine Soliman, and Roland furieux.

This is a review article on the “Reader of the Beautiful Virtue of China” (中国 美德 读本 Zhongguo mei-de duben), published in 2019 by the “Nestor-History” Publishing House (Moscow). It was translated from Chinese into Russian by a Chinese Slavist Yang Chunlei 杨春蕾, and Professor I. A. Kobzev, the Head of the China Department of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The book was edited by Su Shuyan 苏叔阳 (1938–16.07.2019), the writer, screenwriter and poet who is best known to the Russian reader for his bestselling “Reader on China” (中国 读 本 Zhongguo duben. Liaoning 辽宁, 2007). The book under review consists of three parts “The Heaven”, “The Earth” and “The Man”. It comprises a collection of different stories about the mythical characters and everyday events mythological, historical and everyday stories (96 in total, including several songs). Each of the specimens illustrates one or another aspect of the concept of “beautiful virtue”. The review article, therefore, examines in detail the concept of “virtue” (de 德), which is fundamental for Chinese culture. Equally, it deals with such phenomenon as the “beautiful virtue” (mei-de 美德), as well as its place within the value system of modern China. The author concludes as follows. Although the book, in general, offers an idealized image of China, which does not have very much in common with reality, the ideas expressed in the specimina are humanistic and noble and therefore of universal value. The chrestomathy (“Reader”) can therefore be of significant interest to anyone interested in the culture and history of China as well as a teaching aid.

Statement of the problem. The article is a continuation of our work devoted to the problems of the history of culture in the creative work of Vsevolod Ivanov in the 1940s–1960s. A new stage in the formulation of the problem, which makes it possible to trace the origins of the theme of culture in Ivanov’s creative work, became possible thanks to the publication of unknown texts by the writer of his early Siberian period. The purpose of the article is to analyze the theme of culture in Ivanov’s early work, to examine the evolution of the writer’s views. Methodology. The article uses comparative historical textual methods, the method of historical and cultural commentary. Research results. The theme of culture is considered for the first time on the material of Ivanov’s works of the 1910s, the evolution of his views is traced, which were formed in a dialogue with re- gional ideas and the concept of the East and West by A.M. Gorky. It is noted that the early works of the writer reflected anxiety for the fate of cultural values in the modern world. Particular attention is paid to the spiritual values of the culture of the East, understood by Ivanov in his own way and found embodiment in his work. The analysis of the story “The Return of the Buddha” and the third the edition of the novel “The Edessa Shrine” shows how the writer’s attitude to the East changed. Conclusions. The analysis of Ivanov’s works devoted to the theme of culture shows that this problem interested the writer from the very beginning of his creative path. Reflecting on the fate of the outgoing culture of Siberia in early works, dreaming of the possibility of the influence of the ancient East cultures on the historical choice of Russia and Europe in the 1920s, in the story “The Return of the Buddha”, the writer, by the end of the 1950s, obviously, comes to the conclusion that it is impossible for the forces of culture to resist the development of civilization.

The object of attention in the article is that part of the scientific and journalistic heritage of the outstanding Ossetian scientist, doctor of philological sciences, professor, laureate of several prestigious prizes Tamerlan Alexandrovich Guriev. The article examines the problems of Ossetian nartology, literary criticism, theory and practice of literary translation. The object of analysis in the article was such works by Guriev as “On the problem of the genesis of Ossetian Nart names”, “Anthroponymy of the Ossetian Nart epic”, “Problems of Nartiada”, “The heritage of the Scythians and Alans”, “Who is who in the Alan Nartiada”. They sanctify the features of motives, plots of the Nart epic, their variability, connection with world epics, images of heroes, their characters, motivations of actions, evolutionary processes of their development. The second aspect of the content of the proposed work is the problem of K.Kh. Khetagurov in the scientific and journalistic heritage T.A. Guriev. The article also analyzes the side of Guriev as a literary critic, which is associated with his talent as a polemicist, able to defend his own view of some of the works of Kosta Khetagurov. The author, on the basis of a deep understanding of the specifics of the fable genre, the history of its formation and development, convincingly refutes the opinion of those who considered Costa's fables only translations of the works of his predecessors, fabulists. T.A. Guriev, comparing the texts of the fables of K.L. Khetagurov and I.A. Krylova, conclusively comes to the conclusion that the great Ossetian poet did not resort to translations of already known fables, that his fables, even if they are based on world plots, are original, distinctive and deeply national. The third aspect of the scientific heritage of T.A. Guriev, reflected in this work, is associated with an analysis of the scientist's works devoted to the theory and practice of literary translation.
