  AbstractThis research aims to explore the gender equality or lack thereof in the Urdu textbooks taught in Punjab, Pakistan.  Gender bias in textbooks is an important but almost invisible and overlooked problem.  Five Urdu textbooks taught in primary government schools in Punjab were selected for critical discourse analysis.  Both qualitative as well quantitative research methods were adopted.  The number of female and male characters, portrayal of domestic and professional roles by both genders, and cosmetic bias was taken into account.  In all five books analyzed, 28% characters were women whereas remaining were male characters.  Female characters were mostly found in domestic situations with insignificant roles in the stories who did not have a name or an identity except being mothers.    The text was highly biased towards the male characters associating valor and strength with men only.  Since textbooks play a crucial role in the development of the children, it is important to remove the concealed gender bias in textbooks and acknowledge the changing roles of women in the Pakistani society in order to create a society that treats men and women equally.

This study aims to look at the correlation between Critical Discourse Analysis and Free Essays of Class IV MIN 2 Sleman Yogyakarta students. This research uses quantitative research methods. The researcher distributed questionnaires to all grade 4 students because the papulation class did not reach 100 students, so the researchers chose all students to be sampled in this study. Therefore, the population in this study is also a research sample to collect quantitative data. The result of simple correlation analysis obtained the correlation between Critical Discourse Analysis with Free Essay Writing Skills is 0.295. This shows that there is a fairly strong relationship between Critical Discourse Analysis with Essay Writing Skills. While the direction of the relationship is positive because the value of r is positive, it means that the higher the Critical Discourse Analysis, the more the students write essay writing skills.

This study makes a Critical Discourse Analysis of the ecological and non-ecological features of Chinese English news reports and holds that news reports ultimately serves the interest groups it represents and cannot get rid of its ideological influence. To achieve this, with Fairclough’s three-dimensional model as the theoretical framework and from the perspective of ecolinguistics, this study, based on 29 English news reports on the northward migration of Asian elephants from China Daily and by building up a small corpus, combining qualitative and quantitative research methods, aims to analyze the selected corpus with the help of AntConc 3.5.9 (windows) 2020. Finally, through the analysis of text analysis, discourse interpretation, and social interpretation, it is found that Chinese and English news reports have ecological and non-ecological features. At the same time, English news reports in China also try to express and build a harmonious relationship between man and nature. It reflects that China follows the ecological order concept of “harmonious co-existence between man and nature” and the ecological basis of “man and nature are the community of life”.

In this article, two novels by Zoya Pirzad has been investigated considering Fairclough Critical Discourse Analysis. This article is trying to show how ideology and power of male-characters have influenced on female-characters in these novels. This paper shows that males patriarchal dialogues that are influenced by society, law and ideology put female characters in challenge and pushes aside their dialogues. This paper has investigated the influence of tradition, culture, and ideology on family life and particularly on peoples linguistic interactions from gender point of view. It has been found that the dominant discourse is patriarchal and most of novel females are passive. The research method in this article is analytical and analysis unit is sentences and dialogues of Zoya Pirzads  two novels.

Background and Purpose Child safety campaigns play an important role in disseminating injury prevention information to families. A critical discourse analysis of gender bias in child safety campaign marketing materials can offer important insights into how families are represented and the potential influence that gender bias may have on uptake of injury prevention information.Methods Our approach was informed by poststructural feminist theory, and we used critical discourse analysis to identify discourses within the poster materials. We examined the national Safe Kids Canada Safe Kids Week campaign poster material spanning twenty years (1997-2016). Specifically, we analyzed the posters’ typeface, colour, images, and language to identify gender bias in relation to discourses surrounding parenting, safety, and societal perceptions of gender.Results The findings show that there is gender bias present in the Safe Kids Week poster material. The posters represent gender as binary, mothers as primary caregivers, and showcase stereotypically masculine sporting equipment among boys and stereotypically feminine equipment among girls. Interestingly, we found that the colour and typeface of the text both challenge and perpetuate the feminization of safety.Discussion It is recommended that future child safety campaigns represent changing family dynamics, include representations of children with non-traditionally gendered sporting equipment, and avoid the representation of gender as binary. This analysis contributes to the discussion of the feminization of safety in injury prevention research and challenges the ways in which gender is represented in child safety campaigns.

EN Gender equality in language learning has received considerable attention in research on classroom policy and materials. Within studies of materials like language learning texts, most research focuses on content analyses of character roles and images, with sometimes purposeful exclusion of non-human characters. However, non-humans in children’s picture books comprise almost 60% of the characters children read. Therefore, their representations of gender, including biases, overt sexism, and covert sexism should be examined. In this study, I examine gendering of non-human characters using corpus linguistics and critical discourse analysis. Additionally, I use critical image analysis to discuss pictorial gendering of non-human characters within 12 textbooks in two of the United States’ most widely used textbook series for language learning in elementary schools. Results indicate a strong preference for aggressive and adventurous male characters, male supremacist ideologies, and the suppression of female agency. Dentro de los estudios sobre materiales como los textos para el aprendizaje de idiomas, la mayoría de las investigaciones se centran en el análisis del contenido de los roles y las imágenes de los personajes, con una exclusión de los personajes no humanos. Sin embargo, los personajes no humanos de los libros ilustrados para niños representan casi el 60% de los personajes que leen los niños. Por lo tanto, deben examinarse sus representaciones de género, incluyendo los prejuicios, el sexismo manifiesto y el sexismo encubierto. En este estudio, examino la representación de género de los personajes no humanos utilizando la lingüística de corpus y el análisis crítico del discurso. Además, utilizo el análisis crítico de la imagen para analizar el género pictórico de los personajes no humanos en 12 libros de texto de dos de las series de libros de texto más utilizados en Estados Unidos para el aprendizaje de idiomas en las escuelas primarias. Los resultados indican una fuerte preferencia por personajes masculinos agresivos y aventureros, ideologías de supremacía masculina y la supresión de la agencia femenina. Tuttavia, i non umani nei libri illustrati per bambini costituiscono quasi il 60% dei personaggi. Pertanto, dovrebbero essere esaminate le loro rappresentazioni di genere, inclusi pregiudizi, sessismo palese e sessismo nascosto. In questo studio si esamina la sessuazione di personaggi non umani usando la linguistica dei corpora e l’analisi critica del discorso. Inoltre, viene utilizzata l'analisi critica delle immagini per discutere la sessuazione di personaggi non umani all'interno di 12 libri in due delle serie di libri di testo più utilizzate negli Stati Uniti per l'apprendimento delle lingue nelle scuole elementari. I risultati indicano una forte preferenza per personaggi maschili aggressivi e avventurosi, ideologie suprematiste maschili e soppressione dell'agire femminile. This study aims to describe the representation in the case of a woman in the discourse of SEA GAMES gymnastics athlete who was sent back home because of a virginity issue that was published by Kompas.com on the 29th of  November, 2019. The discourse is a hot topic because it raises the pros and cons. Besides social context, this study also describes the structure of the text consisting of macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure. The research approach uses critical discourse analysis by Van Dijk. The results of this study indicate that the news text has a main topic, namely the violation againts feminist values. The superstructure of the news text consists of an introduction, main text, and concluding part. Kompas.com through the micro structure chooses to use various diction in delivering news. In addition to diverse diction, the text is also built with cohesion and coherence to unify the meaning of discourse. The social context built by Kompas.com in this discourse, especially in representing womanis the persecution of women (gender bias) and professional violations of a person.Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk memaparkan representasi perempuan dalam wacana atlet senam SEA GAMES dipulangkan karena tidak perawan yangdiberitakan pada Kompas.com pada 29 November 2019. Wacana tersebut merupakan wacana yang sedang hangat diperbincangkan karena menimbulkan pro dan kontra di kalangan masyarakat. Selain konteks sosial, penelitian ini juga mendeskripsikan struktur teks berita yang terdiri atas struktur makro, superstruktur, dan struktur mikro. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan analisis wacana kritis model Van Dijk. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa teks berita mempunyai topik utama, yakni pelanggaran nilai-nilai feminisme. Selanjutnya, superstruktur teks berita terdiri atas pendahuluan, inti teks, dan penutupan berita. Kompas.com melalui struktur mikro memilih untuk menggunakan berbagai macam diksi dalam menyampaikan berita. Selain diksi yang beragam, teks dibangun dengan piranti kohesi dan koherensi untuk menyatukan makna wacana. Konteks sosial yang dibangun Kompas.comterutama dalam merepresentasikan perempuan pada wacana tersebut adalah adanya penindasan terhadap perempuan (bias gender) serta pelanggaran profesionalitas suatu oknum.

Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is considered an effective approach to explore the hidden realities in a text. The current research analyzes the speeches of the leaders of the two states on the incident of Pulwama attack on 14th February 2019 in the region of Indian occupied Kashmir to control the minds of the audience and formulate their ideologies to achieve their political benefits through power abuse. The data has been taken from the speeches delivered by the both political leaders, the Premier of Pakistan Imran Khan and the Premier of India, Narendra Modi on Pulwama Attack. Both qualitative and quantitative research approaches have been followed to investigate the texts. For Quantitative data,  AntConc 3.5.8 has been utilized for the frequencies and concordance of the important words to be discussed. Observation has been utilized to gain in-depth information to describe qualitatively. The results show that some specific linguistic choices regarding some specific vocabulary, pronouns, and modal verbs have been used ideologically by the premiers to manipulate the language of their speeches. The study will be important for researchers who want to investigate the discourse developed by the political leaders’ speeches on same issue .    Keywords: Discourse, pronoun, modality corpus, intertextuality

The present paper investigates the grammatical choices made by Jamaica Kincaid in her work Lucy. It analyzes how the selected structure contributes to the realization of particular beliefs such as gender inequality, using the Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) approach (Halliday 1973, 1985, 1994; Halliday and Hasan 1989; Halliday and Matthiessen 2004). In particular, the study examines the participants’ roles and the processes types assigned to them with reference to the transitivity system. The data of the present study are collected from the first three chapters of Lucy. The corpus belongs to seven males and eleven female characters who were directly involved in all the actions in the text. A total of 325 sentences were extracted. They were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed. The results of the study revealed the writer’s subvert of traditional gender stereotypes through displaying women as effectual dynamic actors and assertive sayers. In addition, all female characters were shown as the main participants of the other minor processes, in the sense that they were the behavers and sensers in both behavioral and mental clauses. Although the themes of fate and class struggle have been profoundly explored in the critical analyses that have been undertaken on Nyota ya Rehema, however, in Critical Discourse Analysis and Hegemonic Masculinity perspectives, the question of masculinities is no less vital. Therefore, this paper seeks to give a critical insight into varied shades of masculinity that are manifesting in Nyota ya Rehema. Focussing on relevant texts, we uncover the disproportional masculine ideological and power positions that are explicit in sexuality and socio-economic spheres such as marriage, prostitution, employment and property inheritance that depict the disadvantaged position of female characters. The exploration of masculinities in islands Kiswahili novel that has mainly focussed on class struggle may be a welcome departure.
