The aims of this study were to explore any possible existence of linkage between perceived anxiety and speaking skills, and to determine any significant difference in speaking skills between the students who got higher level of speaking anxiety and those who were in lower level of speaking anxiety. This research employed a quantitative method. Sixty-nine second semester student teachers of the English Education Department of Borneo Tarakan University were taken as the sample of this research. Data were collected using questionnaire, speaking test, and interview. Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) questionnaire developed by Horwitz et al. (1986) was used to rate students’ perceived anxiety and speaking test was carried out to assess students’ speaking skills. The Pearson product moment correlation and the independent sample t-test were employed in analyzing the acquired data. The result of this study showed that, first, there was no relationship between speaking anxiety and speaking skills because the r-test value (0.221) was lower than the r-table (0.235) and the sig. value for 2-tailed (0.068) was higher than the level of significance (0.05) which indicated there was no relationship. Second, the students who were in higher level of anxiety got better speaking skills (mean score: 65.6) than those who were in lower level of anxiety (59.7). The result of Independent sample t-test proved that the sig. value for 2-tailed (0.152) was higher than the level of significance (0.05). The result of the interview confirmed that internal and external factors affected the students’ speaking skills. Those factors were psychological state (lack of confidence, discourage, anxiety itself), linguistic knowledge (limited vocabulary, poor grammar, mispronunciation), general knowledge (topics being discussed), performance situations (time, preparation, amount of support), and the learning atmosphere (classroom climate).

The study was conducted on the use of Maple software to reduce student teachers’ errors in Differential Calculus at Evangelical Presbyterian College of Education, Volta Region - Ghana. The research design for the study was quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design. Convenience and simple random sampling techniques were employed to obtain a sample of 104 student teachers, which comprised 53 student teachers in the control group and 51 in the experimental group. Test items were the instruments used for data gathering. Descriptive, paired samples t-test and independent samples t-test were used in analyzing data. Descriptive content error analysis revealed that student teachers committed many conceptual, procedural and technical errors when solving tasks in the differential calculus. The results also indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between student teachers’ of the experimental group exposed to the use of Maple software in learning differential calculus to control groups exposed to traditional methods. Consequently, it was recommended that Maple assisted instruction be incorporated in the teaching and learning of differential calculus in the school; and also there is the need for the mathematics teachers in the school to employ blended teaching approaches, in which Maple software are used simultaneously to enhance teaching of mathematics concepts.

The study assessed the technologies available for empowering women in cassava production in Abia State. The objectives were to determine the availability and utilization of technologies for empowering women in cassava production. Questionnaire was the instrument for data collection which was developed on a 4-point measuring scale and was validated by peer review of researchers in agricultural extension. Reliability was established by the Cronbach’s alpha which gave co-efficient of r ∝ = 0.74 indicating a high reliability. Multi-stage random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 240 and the extension filed officers were used as research assistants to facilitate the administration and retrieval of the questionnaire. Data analysis was achieved with the use of descriptive statistics such as frequency, mean which referenced x = 2.50 as the benchmark and inferential statistics as t-test at 0.050 level of significance. The findings revealed that majority (x = 2.56) agreed that technologies were available for empowering women in cassava production while (x = 2.03) indicated that the extent women were empowered utilizing technologies for cassava production was low. The t- test of no mean significant difference was not rejected because t = 0.01 at P ≥ 0.05 which indicated no mean difference between availability and utilization of technologies for empowering women cassava producers. On the basis of the findings the study recommended that more extension field personnel should be employed and retrained on how to train women on how to use the technologies. Keywords: women, empowerment, cassava, production

ABSTRACT This present study examined student teachers’ Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety (FLSA) associated with gender and proficiency differences. The participants of the study were 72 second-year EFL student teachers at the English teacher education program of one public university in Jambi, Indonesia. A close-ended questionnaire developed from Syakur (1987) and Horwitz et al, (1986) was administered to the participants to explore their FLSA. The results indicated that EFL student teachers are highly anxious when speaking English. Furthermore, the findings revealed that there is no statistical difference between male and female student teachers on FLSA. On the contrary, proficiency does affect EFL learners’ anxiety wherein more proficient students seem to be less nervous to speak. How to Cite: Abrar, M.
