ABSTRACt & RÉSUMÉ : The remarkable influx of Chinese migrant entrepreneurs in West Africa has been met with growing resistance from established African entrepreneurs. Whether the Chinese have a competitive edge over Africans because of distinctive sociocultural traits or whether the Chineseʹs supposed effectiveness is just a characteristic feature of any trading diaspora is open to question. This comparative exploratory study of Chinese and Nigerian entrepreneurial migrants in Ghana and Benin provides initial answers to these questions. Apparently, the cultural stimuli for migrant drivers of change are not restricted to inherited value systems and religions, such as a Protestant ethic or Confucianism. Rather, they are continually adapted and invented anew by transnational migration networks in a globalized world. There is no evidence of the supposed superiority of the innovative culture of Chinese entrepreneurial migrants versus that of African entrepreneurial migrants. Instead, there exist trading diasporas which have a generally enhanced innovative capacity vis-àvis local entrepreneurs, regardless of the national culture in which they are embedded. In addition, the rivalry of Chinese and Nigerian migrant entrepreneurs in African markets does not necessarily lead to the often suspected cut-throat competition. Often the actions of each group are complementary and mutual benefiting to those of the other. Under certain conditions they even contribute to poverty alleviation in the host country.

In today's globalized world, gathering Competitive Intelligence (CI) and using it strategically to gain a competitive edge has become a necessity. Integrating knowledge management and CI helps firms to respond quickly to changing business conditions. Organizational culture, ethics, and emotional intelligence influence knowledge sharing which enhances CI scanning. Employees, knowingly or unknowingly, can become the weakest link in a firm's efforts to protect business intelligence. There is reluctance in the organizations to address the issues of ethical and legal means to gather CI. Corporate espionage is a silent, enigmatic threat to the competitive position of firms and nations. Annual losses to corporate espionage are estimated to be US$300 Billion. A 3-step strategy of prevention, detection, and remediation helps to combat corporate espionage.

In this paper, I argue that some entertainment companies of South Korea offer a distinctive business strategy in this globalized world; thus, they can widen their market share, increase profits, and sharpen their competitive edge. SM Entertainment, which is one of the Hallyu Wave pioneers in music industry, has showed its distinct way to succeed in the currently saturated market of idol groups in South Korea. Choosing Hallyu Wave from international business perspective as the main topic of this writing was due to its increasing importance in music industry and its growing influence in South Korean government policies. Therefore, I shall descriptively address the strategies formulated by SM Entertainment to compete in the domestic and international music industry from its way to groom their idol groups to its way to ‘sell’ them. This paper offers some business strategies of SM Entertainment of which some other companies could learn from; namely the distinct traineeship system, successful B2C strategy, and profitable B2B cooperation.

This article examines issues of transnational migration in the settler-colonial context of Canada. First, I review some of the recent debates about foregrounding Indigeneity and decolonization in anti-racist thought and work, especially in relation to critical and anti-racist approaches to migration. The article then moves from this debate to the question of ‘our right to be here’, the relationship of this right to the treaties, and how migrant rights and treaty relations perspectives might interact in a context that must be informed by Indigenous laws and legal traditions.

Grounded in the perspectives of language socialization and transnational habitus, this one-year ethnographic case study explores two middle-class Chinese sojourner families’ educational, bilingual and biliterate practices after their arrival in the U.S. It addresses the process that their middle childhood children experienced, from the excitement of the new English-speaking environment to linguistic and social isolation, to their adaptation to the environment and, finally, to transnational uplift. The families’ transnational practices throughout the four phases are shaped by their economic, educational and sociocultural dispositions that link together their country of origin and the U.S. They tend to cross national borders in language, literacy and education as well as to circulate glocalized English–Chinese biliteracy. This study reveals the disjunction between the families’ “imagined world” of the U.S. and the reality of a language barrier and ideological conflicts underpinned in an English-only society. The families’ transnational migration is an educational practice with access to their children’s “imagined world”. This study suggests that ESL learning should be considered as a socialization practice, which is tied to and structured by transnational fields in today’s globalized world.

International interdisciplinary projects (IDR) are a microcosm of multicultural landscapes. Through a culture theories perspective, in particular, viewing culture as a system of explicitly and implicitly coded values, this chapter conveys the processes and results of a study that investigates and uncovers the management strategies of an IDR project, CATCH. The study of culture from a value systems approach enables a more subtle and nuanced approach to the analysis and framing of cultural heterogeneity in the context of an IDR project, beyond the often dichotomous, cultural dimensions construct. Due to the multiple actors in an IDR project, the example of CATCH illustrates a more nuanced view of cultural filters that arise from each academic discipline. Using the culture as value systems perspective, this chapter shows how multicultural landscapes and different resulting knowledges can be leveraged towards an integrated worldview when solving challenges in a globalized world with limited resources.

The article presents an analysis of economic culture of the Western civilization in the context of its current shape and condition. Although this topic has already been chosen as the subject of research in the past, in this paper the stress is put on those aspects that do not seem to be very popular. To look at the uniqueness of the Western civilization in the context of a globalized world may seem incorrect to some extent, but in our opinion it is still necessary if we want to explore and to discover the sources of unprecedented growth and development that not only the West have benefited from. The article thereby contributes to the field of the research of the impact of culture on the socioeconomic order. The paper therefore seeks to offer an explanation of the specific path that the Western civilization has followed, because it is important in the context of the future dilemmas of global society, which needs to find solutions to its different challenges and problems. Besides discussing the contribution of such recognized authors as Max Weber and Peter L. Berger, the article analyses the role of mediating structures (with special reference to the family) and cultural contradictions which seriously influence the shape and condition of the West these days.

POST-NATIONAL CONSTELLATIONS AND THE QUESTION OF SOCIAL INTEGRATION

The preservation of collective cultural identity in tension with the integration of new members was the topic of a discussion between Taylor and Habermas in their texts on recognition policy.
