Breathing exercises for the treatment of anxiety symptoms

Breathing exercises have been used successfully to reduce the negative symptoms characterised anxiety and depression. One of the most effective methods of psychological counseling with students and other persons included in education sphere is breathing relaxation exercises, which can improve concentration, reduce anxiety, reduce heart rate, reduce muscle tension and improve sleep quality. The article presents the anatomical side of breathing exercises, physiological mechanisms and specific instructions for the practical use of the method.

Background: Untreated sleep quality can bring changes that can affect both physically and psychologically so that it can reduce sleep quality in menopausal women, one of the non-pharmacological management in improving sleep quality is progressive muscle relaxation by reducing muscle tension, eliminating fatigue so as to improve quality sleep in menopausal women. Objective: to determine the effectiveness of progressive muscle relaxation in improving sleep quality. Method: A systematic review through review of maternity nursing articles to identify the effect of progressive muscle relaxation in improving sleep quality in menopausal women. The article inclusion criteria used were the effect of progressive muscle relaxation in improving sleep quality, while the exclusion criteria ie articles were not full text. Search articles are accessed from databases, namely: Sciencedirect, Pubmed, JKI, JKD. Articles that meet the inclusion criteria are collected and examined systematically. Search for literature published from 2015 to 2018. the article search process gets 4 articles that meet the requirements for inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: in this systematic review shows that progressive muscle relaxation can improve sleep quality. Conclusion: Progressive muscle relaxation can improve sleep quality

Abstract Purpose of Review We summarized peer-reviewed literature investigating the effect of virtual mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) on sleep quality. We aimed to examine the following three questions: (1) do virtual MBIs improve sleep quality when compared with control groups; (2) does the effect persist long-term; and (3) is the virtual delivery method equally feasible compared to the in-person delivery method? Recent Findings Findings suggest that virtual MBIs are equivalent to evidence-based treatments, and to a limited extent, more effective than non-specific active controls at reducing some aspects of sleep disturbance. Overall, virtual MBIs are more effective at improving sleep quality than usual care controls and waitlist controls. Studies provide preliminary evidence that virtual MBIs have a long-term effect on sleep quality. Moreover, while virtual MBI attrition rates are comparable to in-person MBI attrition rates, intervention adherence may be compromised in the virtual delivery method. Summary This review highlights virtual MBIs as a potentially effective alternative to managing sleep disturbance during pandemic-related quarantine and stay-at-home periods. This is especially relevant due to barriers of accessing in-person interventions during the pandemic. Future studies are needed to explore factors that influence adherence and access to virtual MBIs, with a particular focus on diverse populations.

Abstract Introduction Pathophysiologic responses to viral respiratory challenges such as SARS-CoV-2 may affect sleep duration, quality and concomitant cardiorespiratory function. Unobtrusive and ecologically valid methods to monitor longitudinal sleep metrics may therefore have practical value for surveillance and monitoring of infectious illnesses. We leveraged sleep metrics from Sleep Number 360 smart bed users to build a COVID-19 predictive model. Methods An IRB approved survey was presented to opting-in users from August to November 2020. COVID-19 test results were reported by 2003/6878 respondents (116 positive; 1887 negative). From the positive group, data from 82 responders (44.7±11.3 yrs.) who reported the date of symptom onset were used. From the negative group, data from 1519 responders (48.4±12.9 yrs.) who reported testing dates were used. Sleep duration, sleep quality, restful sleep duration, time to fall asleep, respiration rate, heart rate, and motion level were obtained from ballistocardiography signals stored in the cloud. Data from January to October 2020 were considered. The predictive model consists of two levels: 1) the daily probability of staying healthy calculated by logistic regression and 2) a continuous density Hidden Markov Model to refine the daily prediction considering the past decision history. Results With respect to their baseline, significant increases in sleep duration, average breathing rate, average heart rate and decrease in sleep quality were associated with symptom exacerbation in COVID-19 positive respondents. In COVID-19 negative respondents, no significant sleep or cardiorespiratory metrics were observed. Evaluation of the predictive model resulted in cross-validated area under the receiving-operator curve (AUC) estimate of 0.84±0.09 which is similar to values reported for wearable-sensors. Considering additional days to confirm prediction improved the AUC estimate to 0.93±0.05. Conclusion The results obtained on the smart bed user population suggest that unobtrusive sleep metrics may offer rich information to predict and track the development of symptoms in individuals infected with COVID-19. Beta-blocking agents with partial agonist activity seem to reduce heart rate at rest slightly less than those without this property. Cardio-selective drugs have no effect on stroke volume at rest contrary to the non-selective ones which will reduce it somewhat. This difference is abolished during exercise. The only difference seen during work between different beta-blockers is the effect on the peripheral vascular resistance. The selective drugs lower the arterial pressure with unchanged resistance.

PurposeThe purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of air mattress pressure on sleep quality.Design/methodology/approachTen young healthy males participated in all hard surface [AH], shoulder soft [SS] and shoulder and hip soft mattress [SHS] conditions. The surface pressure for SS and SHS were set at their preferred levels.FindingsThe results showed that sleep efficiencies were over 95% for all the three conditions; there were no significant differences in individual sleep variables among the three conditions, but overall sleep quality was better for SS than AH (p = 0.065); heart rates during sleep was greater for AH than the other two conditions (p < 0.1); and a stronger relationship between clothing and bed microclimate humidity were found for SS and SHS than that for AH.Research limitations/implicationsThese results indicated that the both pressure relief air mattresses that were set at their own preferred levels provided high quality sleep with no marked differences.Practical implicationsAir pressure relief mattresses can improve sleep quality of healthy individuals during sleep at night. The results can be used to understand appropriate pressure distribution on surface mattress according to body region, and also to develop algorithms to provide optimum sleep using mattresses with surface pressure control by body region.Originality/valueThe present study found that the shoulder and/or hip pressure relief air mattresses that were set at their own preferred levels provided high quality sleep with no marked differences.
